'QC' FOREYYORD Whether it be ln living color or black and white, we feel television has become a great part of the American way of life. lt would be only fitting then to recognize this great medium, and the influence it has on our lives. For that reason the Wampum staff has elected to use T.V as its theme for the 1959 yearbook. We hope you derive as much pleasure from it as we have derived in fabricating it. f 4 oooooooooooooooOoooOoOoooooOoOooo0oOoOI oogc o ooo o OOO BOC oooo U'OO oooooooooo 'ca 9 uxoun sooo 80 ooo 0 como O effiol 3 O8 o o .O ooooa 0 Ol UO O o o o o o 8 o 0 o O 0 o o O 0 o o 9 o o 2 o o o o o o 2 o 8 o o o 0 0 g o o 0 TABLE OF CONTENTS Dedication ....................... Mr. Merchant, a Col- gate graduate, came to North the year it opened, 1937. He has since then taught English and Public Speak- ing. In addition he has served as the Director of Little Theatre Guild. His stage productions, too numerous to mention, have always been out- standing--a distinct credit to him, and his organization. What many students do not know is that Mr. Merchant composed our Alma Mater, a beautiful melody with most fitting lyrics. For these and all your many other contributions toward giving life at North an even more palatable taste, we say Thanks Merch and may you be with us a long time. 6 all Mi PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE This i959 Wampum is another fine record of Interesting events. Our sincere thanks go to the staff and adviser for their enthusiasm and originality. We are proud to show our friends our copy of the '59 Wampum. Changes in our faculty and student body are Inevitable. We miss old friends and will not forget their great service to North. Best wishes to the classes of '59, G. S. Tate March 1959 w 7 8 54' MR. What would a school be like without a sports programll To recognize this group who contribute so much to our years at North, a Varsity B Club was formed. Under the able direction of Coach Reutlinger, this lettermen's club has become averypopular organization, in the school. It had an All Sports dinner last Spring, and it hopes to make this an annual affair. JOHN REUTLINGER Faculty Advisor 56 Football Coaching Staff Y I lull Ed: Good Evening, Gordon. Nice to see you again. Gordon: Thanks Ed. Good to be aboard. Ed: Let's see, Coach, how long have you been at North? Gordon: Just finished my twelfth year, Ed, and I must say it has been most en- o a e. These men with you, Gordon, are our assistants-could we meet theml Gordon: Yes, I was iust about to introdiace them. This fellow on my left, Gerry Demaree, came when I did in 1947-works as my line coach. Next is Charlie Howland and Hank Diller who work with the J.V.'s. Do a real fine job, and certainly aid the varsity program a great deal . Of course, without a Frosh pro- gram the entire system would be much less effective. To handle this group are two very capable coaches, Oz Winters and Cardin Kibler. This other chap on my right, Ernie Lalley, keeps the entire operation running smoothly. While he is not a coach, we could not function with- out the services of our able Director of Athletics. ln as much as he is a very integral part of our organization, I asked him to be here with us tonight. , Ed: l'm certainly glad you did-and itsa pleasure to see you Ernie-and all you other coaches. 'P' Gordon: Ed, we have all enioyed being able to visit with you and hope to see you at our games next Fall. Ed: Thanks, Gordon-and good luck next yearl 57 K. f Q i,z. 2 , 55551 AQQP mi s ,f- D 9 H f' fx .,,'X k ir Ev. m ll ln f ., 'X X l 5, j Q i' x 1 , 3 ,,., I -I.. QL airway.. WY? Jia? The one conference loss was to arch-rival Central played under trying conditions on our home field. As usual the team was outstandin and should aid t e varsit in ears to come. 9 Y Y Fro sh Football ROW I: Gradllng, Peleggi, Wright, Marshall, Hern, Roberts, Sheppard, Arnold. The Indian Papooses had their first losing season in several years. While battling all the way in true North fashion, the young Indians had a number of bad breaks. Spirit was excellent and it is hoped this attitude will carry on in their careers as J .V. and varsity players. 60 Varsity Basketball JOHN REUTLINGER Varsity Basketball Coach ROW l: Wallace, Heck, Williams, King, Baikowski. ROW 2: Remza, Conole, Richardson, Grubham, Krupifza. 61 Varsity Basketball J .V . coach Charley Howland took over when coach Reutlinger injured his back at the start of the season . The junior mentor admirably guided the team to an early conference lead. The losses of BobbyWilliams and Lynn Wallace, however, caused North to falter, as Dick Heck, Dick King, and John Baikowski weren't enough to keep the team at the top of the heap. Dur- ing the second semester the team went on to notch out a 9-3 record, however, and finished second in the S.T.C. l Box Scores J North Opponent 53 E .
