We the Editor-in-Chief, all the edi- tors, and our staff wish to dedicate this collection of life-long memories to our lighter days at North, Surely, as life progresses there will be many in- stances when a chuckle, a smile, or a laugh will aid a great deal in carrying out the true spirit of North. So we offer, INDIAN ANI'ICS. To any who have known him, however, he has been much more. He has been a counselor in those times of personal crisis which face teen-agers at every turn, a teacher with a sense of humor and perhaps most of all, a friend. And so, without further ado because more would clutter his direct and quiet sincerity we proudly dedicate the 1954 Wampum to E. Webster Haight. W new X . i T fa-- 'Ffff W Eff? . This yearbook will grow in value to you as the years go by. Let it be a strong tie that, from time to time, will bring you back to North. Each year, alumni groups have returned for a Little Theatre Guild play, a concert, a basketball or a football game, Last October, our first Home- coming Day brought hundreds back to North. The members of the classes of '54 will be scat- tered far and wide, but we hope many will be on hand for our second Homecoming Day this Octo- ber. To our Wampum staff who have created this 1954 yearbook with the help of many, I say a warm Thank you. We are proud to say to our friends I'his is our yearbook. When you read this, we will all be hard at work to complete assignments and to clear the final hurdles of the spring term. Our school has had a full and happy year. Our teachers have again excelled in their desire to serve North. Iwel- come this opportunity to express for all of us our gratitude to a topflight faculty. G.S. Tate 4 MR. JOHN BRENNAN MRS. J. Losing only one game and that by a heartbreak- ing 1 point margin. This is how Coach Gordie 0'Reilly's boys played one of their most successful seasons. North opened at Utica playing the Procter team. The Indians gave a forecast of things to come as they filled the air with passes thrown by quarterbacks Harry Cole and Joe Dimashio. Pete Millspaugh broke away before the lst half ended for a 52 yard T.D. jaunt and Joe Dimashio threw a running pass from the halfback slot to Ed Garbarino, who scampered in for paydirt. Final score? North 21, Procter 0. North's next conquest was Elmira Southside. This lopsided contest showed that in all certainty, North was to be reckoned with as Millspaugh faked off right tackle and raced 87 yards for the end zone and as Little Joe faked off guard and tackles for consistent gains and two scores. Final tally, North 32 - E. S. S. 7. The U.E. game was one of those catastrophes that come all too often in sports. When North came up against U.E. it had only one defense and so in spite of North's early T.D. on a fumble recovery, this game ended 25-25. It was in this game however that the potentiality of North's highly successful split - T option, where the quarterback can hand off to the half- back, pitch to the fullback or keep and go outside of tackle was realized. Time and time again this bit of razzle-dazzle ball gained Indian yardage. Before it had fully recovered from U. E. North ran up against the strong single wing attack of Ithaca. In the first half as Ithaca scored again and again, things looked gloomy indeed. But just before the half time horn blew, the Indians completed a long pass to Pete Millspaugh on the 11 yard line. Then the big fullback showed the form that was to make him the S. T.C. scoring champion, as he pounded to paydirt. Half time score was 27-13 Ithaca. The second half was a oozbaff different story as the Indians caught on fire. The defense stiffened with Neil Dominick and Geori Gamble doing great defensive work. However, ev1 with Dimashio breaking away for a long scoring jau and Jim Strain consistently slithering off tackle fl yardage. The Indians failure to convert extra poin caused the score to be 26-27 Ithaca at the final gu' Even then however North was on the Ithaca 19 ya line and threatening again. The Middletown games only claim to fame was tl fact that it was during this 34-7 fiasco that Pete Mill: paugh obtained the ankle injury which prevented hi from doing much in the following Central game. North's next conquest was the traditional Nortl Central contest. Central playing its best game of tl year still could not subdue the Indians. Despi numerous fumbles Harry Cole sparked a 3rd quartn drive to a T.D. Jim Strain made 2 T.D. 'S runs c the left side beautifully, and Bob Michalek tight-roy walked to a 20 yard T. D. from a quick opener off tl right side of the Indian line. Final score, North 1' Central 13. The J. C. game showed some of the Indian potenti as North ran wild 39-7. Dimashio ran back an I yard kick-off return. E. F.A. was the finest game the Indians played they showed how easily they could have been t' S. T. C. champions. North held Elmira scoreless wi great defense work by Neil Dominick, George Gamk and Jim Polizotto. North's pass defense was supe as Bob Michalek intercepted two key passes and Do Wagner intercepted one which enabled Millspaugh score three plays later. Little Joe Dimashio scor 2 T. D.'s and Jim Strain caught a back pass and swive hipped his way to paydirt. The final score was Noi 27 - E. F. A. 0. Even though they ended up in second place, Noi captured the Binghamton Press Trophy S. T. C. sco ing titles for teams and individuals. Then too, Gor C'Reilly won the Coach of the Year title. ,ew 1 Sew -3 xgga Row 1, left to right: Ed Garbarino, Harold Cole, Bob Matera, Pete Millspaugh, Joe DiMaschio, Jim Strain, Tom Dellapenna, Pat Monforte, George Gamble. North opened the season which was to find it in econd place in poor fashion as Union Endicott rounced the Indians 61-52. North's defense looked potty in spite of Don Hurley and Doug Geiser. Then Owego took North 49-42 as Geiser was the nly Indian to break double figures. North walloped Z. F. A. however 68-51 as the Indian defense meshed eautifully for the first time. It was so good that it cld all the E. F. A. men virtually pointless. In a non-conference tilt North once again came out n the short end 51-57. The game with J.C. was quite different story however, as Don Galleger came irough in his overdue form to score 17 points and ed the Warriors to a 63-51 victory. Then the North Indians clobbered Vestal 60-41 and icy looked good as almost everyone scored. Central's gzune defense in the next game kept the idians bottled up as the Bulldogs scored a 58-44 win t North. The Indians bounded back the following week, how- ver as Don Hurley, Doug Geiser, Don Galleger con- aollvd the board and led North to a 62-51 defeat of ortland, dgwhh! Aside from its regular work of writing, printing, distributing the paper, the North Star staff sponsors an annual bake sale and promotes the selection of a king and queen to reign at the traditional May Dance, North Star Editors Row 1: Linda Kellam, art editor, Elaine Kern, news editor, Helen Herrick, editor- in-chief, Gertrude Schuler, news editor, Mary Eastman, girls' sports editor. THE WAMPUM the production of our year- as the Wampum staff bid a Mr. Webster Haight, faculty years, and buckled down to work under the leadership of Mr, Gerald Demaree, Besides working to provide a book of pleasant memories of North, a Wampum staff member learns many of the journalistic tricks of production. He also learns how large a part co-operation plays in the de- velopment of a truly good yearbook. During the 8th period study hall in 116, typewriters clicking while busy Wam- pumites worked at the job of cropping pic- tures, During February and March, jars of paint and brushes were strewn over the desks as the Art Staff could be seen drawing posters to aid their selling campaign, Most of the ingenious ideas for the yearbook were born in this study hall in additionto the solv- ing of the thousand and one details of pro- duction. As always, the worry of whether or not the deadline would be met appeared in the spring. But, as usual, the staff pulled through and produced this yearbook, the best Wampum ever. .T. The North High Little Theater Gui1d,work- ing with stage and paint crew, did an enviable job in bringing the best in drama to the stu- dent body and the community. Under the direction of Mr, Raymond D, Merchant, the Guild presented two fine plays, each superb- ly acted by our own young talent. In addition to the admirable contributions of the various committees, the stage crew capably solved the constant problems of lighting, staging, and sound, so imperative to a successful production. The responsibility of painting and decorating the sets was assumed and dutifully performed by the Paint Crew and their director, Mr. Clyde Jones, The Plot Thickens. 3 Oh! No! Whether you prefer listening to Beethoven, a Sousa march, the Dragnet theme, or My Old Kentucky Home, the North High Music Department can satisfy almost every student's taste in instrumental and vocal music. Our talented band handles any and all assignments that come its way. Be it a parade, a football game, pep assembly, spring band concert, civic request performance, or a state band contest, the North High Band always comes through with flying colors. The band should be highly commended for its work, especially in overcoming the occupational hazards of muddy fields and cold damp weather to practice their unique marching formations for the football games. Mr. Richard McCutchan, the capable director of our band, is also in charge of our orchestra. This organization provides music for the various graduation programs on Class Night, the Sunday program, and for Commencement. It is also the orchestra that performs during the intermissions at the productions of Little Theater Guild. This year, a group of out- standing members ofthe band and orchestra were chosen to play at a state concert held in Elmira. The North High choir and chorus, under the direction of Miss Marion Thornburn, forms the vocal section of our music department. Each year, these two groups sponsor a Spring Music Festival in addition to providing beautiful choral arrangements of familiar songs at assembly programs throughout the school year. To add to the effectiveness of their performances, the choir purchased electric candles. At the Christmas program, the candles, lighted in the dark auditorium, provided the reverent atmosphere for the singing of carols. In May, a group of students were chosen from choir and chorus to sing at Potsdam under the direction of a well- known choral director, Robert Shaw. Russell, Associate and Treasurer 115 Uur kind of freedom The world today needs a strong America. That is not boastful. It is a sobering estimate of the responsibilities facing us-particularly, you young graduates. The nation looks to you as that reserve of strength-moral and physical -to balance the scales for free men. For the American interpretation of freedom encompasses far more than mere escape from economic or political slavery. We demand a far more posi- tive, a far more substantial, reward for our efforts. We hold unfalteringly to the doctrine of man's right to seek his own goal-his own quest for happi- ness and security. We need have no fear that our social structure can be destroyed by forces from within, or from without, so long as the tenant can hope to be owner, the worker can aspire to management and the average citizen can find it possible to attain success and security. This, then, is our kind of freedom-and our kind alone. It is the freedom we must guard vigilantly to uphold our significant position in World leader- ship.
