While she is ill her absence makes us realize more than ever just how dependent on her we are. We know Miss O'Connor as our teacher, one with a fervor for making history live, and an ability to do so. We know her as our advisor when we are confronted by the problems that we high school students have to face. And we know her as our friend always. She has proved this again and again inthe past -- as sponsor of Honor Society, as advisor for Student Council, and as guest speaker for Lit Club. We, the members of the staff of this book, wish to express with the rest of the student body and faculty at North, our sin- cere hope that she will be back with us very soon. fl 6 ,,L.L,,.L .. W - ' ,:,f,,i'-,M Sf' -- f mcg iff -, V,,,,.3-.K J1 North High School stands today as one of the leading schools in our state. All that we enjoy has come about through teamwork and high ideals of service. Our faculty led by our former Principal, H. Earle Weaver, developed with a loyal student body a spirit that won for the school great achievements. Those of us who served with Mr. Weaver are grateful for his able leadershipl Always, his goal was to look out forthe best interests of North High. His spirit of cheerful service is very much alive in the life of the school. His example will con- tinue to be a challenge to all of us to keep North moving forward to new goals. My wish for North is that we shall always keep North a friendly school where teamwork between faculty and students in our classrooms and our activities pays valuable dividends. We are a large family. That means we must share in keeping the school an attractive place in which to work. Large families often have deep loyalties. Older brothers and sisters help create those loyalties. Each term we have new sopho- mores who look to our upper classmen for leadership. Seniors who have become our top writers, athletes, actors and musicians as well as students set the pace for new members of our student body. An active senior class is a must in a school as large as ours. Looking to the future my aim is to conserve the energy and skills of our faculty so they may do their best for North. By safeguarding their best interests the wel- fare of the school will be served. As demands for new activities arise we shall do our best to be alert to sponsor them. Through activities students are tied into school life. They have a good feel- ing that they are doing something that counts. Good school spirit grows from a healthy activity program. North means to keep alive its school spirit. For this Wampum we are grateful. Here is another example of teamwork and loyalty. Congratulations to the staff and its loyal advisor, Mr. Webster Haight, for a fine contribution to North. 7 g1 grv,,1,.1,-y V. u , A Q V. , , Why, ,K ,, .13 X ,T M ,.., 5E5ff!ff5iZii1fiiii 1 .,,,.,,.. si: I1 ns? . ..V,,V. 3 V W.L.,x,.x, , . ,. MR. RONALD L. JOHNSTON, vocational counselor, has been at North in that capa- city for thirteen years. From his office in room 5A he also supervises tests for high school equivalency diplomas. He was graduated from Union College with a B.S.. in Chemistry degree and from Syracuse University with an M.A. in Education. Be- fore coming to North, Mr. Johnston was a research engineer with General Electric in Schenectady and an instructor in Mount Pleasant High School, Schenectady. MISS IRENE M. MC NULTY, girls' counselor, has in her first year at North won the friendship and respect of all of us who work with and are associated withher. A graduate of Cortland State Teachers Col- lege and New Yo rk University, Miss McNulty has earned a B.S. and M.A. de- gree. She was girls' counselor at East Junior for eight years and a half and pre- vious to that was a social studies instruc- tor at East Junior. She has also been a teacher in elementary school. Her office in room 103 is a busy place as she con- sults with the girls of North and tries to help them to adjust to each new situation. MR. JOHN BRENNAN, boys' counselor, whose office is located in room 103, came to North last September also. His friendly smile and easy manner have helped many boys over a rough spot during the last year. Mr. Brennan was graduated from St. Bonaventure's University with the de- grees of Bachelor of Science and Master of Education. After four years as mathe- matics teacher at West Junior, he was a math teacher at Central for six years. Before coming to North, Mr. Brennan was boys' counselor at East Junior for seven years. North has fared well with its new ad- ministration this year.. Such innovations as the dropping of the afternoon home room period, shortening of the noon hour, change in library procedure during study hall periods, and the use of the record player in the cafeteria during the noon hour, to mention but a few changes, have given new life to what threatened to become mono- tony. We welcome everyone new to our school, and especially greet Mr. Tate as our principal and Miss McNulty and Mr. Bren- nan as our counselors. To achieve this, those who participate ac- tively in school life must, as in the vary- ing stages of an assembly line, cooperate and work hand-in-hand to manufacture the finished product. The instrument of this cooperation is expr e s s ed at North High School by its Student Council. Since its inception in 1937 the Council has taken a leading hand in the organiza- tion and execution of school affairs. For this r ea s on it has always attracted the ablest from our student group. When someone wishes to express an idea, make a request or offer his assist- ance in a school activity, he has just to in- form his Council homeroom representative of his wish. The latte r then places the matter before the entire Student Council. Here is representative democracy at its highest level. The very few who abuse or ignore this privilege do not lessen its value as a symbol of our Way of life. Besides carrying out student requests, Student Council sponsors noon hour pro- X grams, and provides professional assem- blies. To fund its yearly budget the Coun- cil conducts a tag sale. Here the student body has an opportunity to expr e s s its appreciation of all that North stands for in a manner more concrete than exuberant cheering. From the proceeds of these tag sales the Council performs many commun- ity services, e. g., it sends a Christmas check to the Volunteers of America, and provices flowers for the graves of the war dead on Memorial Day. Each year the primary function of the Student Council has been to devise ways and means of assisting the student, of making his scholastic existence easier and more agreeable. Whether these bene- fits are recognized and published or go untold, they all help us and our school to become a better place to workand to play. With the Council and all the rest of our organizations cooperating and working to - gether toward mutual goals, we shall con- tinue to grow and progress. All the while we shall hold in our hearts the timeless strains of our Alma Mater-- To you we'll e'er be true--Hail! Hail! It is a rather small pin showing a torch that illuminates four letters: C,S,L,S. Intrinsi- cally this pin has little value, but for those things for which it is the symbol, its value is incalculable. For, you see, this torch also sheds its rays on three words: Nat- ional Honor Society. The letters engrav- ed on that small ghunk of metal signify that its wearer has achieved what his school considers outstanding eminence in Character, Scholarship, Leadership and Service. Officially our Honor Society is known as the Ihikona Chapter of National Honor Society. Its purpose inbeing is to promote scholarship and give recognition to those who, in addition to having obtained an out- standing scholastic record, have rendered service to the school. ,s3?'5i1Qiiii3?3l5:' . sv2a'asl,.,--'z v , gr! While the Society does consider scholar- ship basic to ability, and as such, sets a standard of an average of 4.25 or better for admittance, mere isolated mental bril- liance is not enough. Honor Society mem- bers must have the ability to use a fine mindto guide and lead others not as gifted as they. N- Every year around the first of April a strange and fascinating thing happens in room 213. The quiet repose that had ex- isted there for the first seven months of the school year is suddenly and rudely shattered. In one week an otherwise nor- mal s c ho o lr o o m is transformed into a r e a s o na b le facsimile of the Aberdeen Proving G r o un d s . Typewriters clackg pastepots boil, editors tear their hairg ad- men pop in and out s c r eaming that the Lumpy Union Suit Co. wants a high school Hercules to model their newest creation for the yearbook ad. The cause for this striking metamor- phosis is the sudden realization on the part of the editorial staff that that hideous monster, DEADLINE, is two weeks off. This realizationis always accompanied by a sudden grasping of the head and a pierce- ing, uninterrupted three minute scream in the key of G. Throughout the ensuing chaos, the only stabilizing fa cto r is the tranquil figure of our mentor and counse- lor, Mr. Webster Haight, calmly thrusting burning match heads under the fingernails of a delinquent editor. After all the sound and fury, which sig- nifies a great deal to us Wampumians, a book containing several innovations has been produced. This year was the first to see senior portraits done bya commercial photographer. This year the Wampum had a face lifting. It was sent to a different printer using different, more esthetic type faces. To facilitate production of the book, a homeroom made up solely of Wampum staffers was fo r me d . All of which was done in an effort ot produce the biggest and best Wampum ever. Althougha lot of fun can be poked at the last minute activities of the Wampum, a healthy respect is due to those people who are responsible for putting out the book. These people sacrificed their afternoons as well as a great deal of their school time. Many of them were even willing to make the supr eme sacrifice: giving up part of their Easter vacation to work on the book. It is through the eyes of this, our school newspaper, that one can get a perspective of our scholastic scene as a whole, not as s epa rate , disconnected parts. Sports, news of our clubs and organizations, out- standing happenings within the student body itself, current problems facing the school--all are aired and reflected in the Star's eight annual editions. Thus it forms a continuous and integral history of the year at North. For the second consecutive year the editor of the North Star also edited the Wampum. Tim Sullivan's former post was held in 1953 by William Warriner, The North Star has other callings over and above the assembling, printing, and distributing of school news. Under its sponsorship an annual bake sale is held, and a King and Queen are selected for the traditional May Dance. -Excellence in work on the newspaper staff is rewarded by membership in Quill and Scroll, an international society for high school journalists. The headquarters of this organization is at Northwestern University in Chicago. Students are chosen for this honor from the Senior A class and receive their awards at the North Star outing held in June. These awards serve as lasting reminders of the hard work and good fun that comes from working on the school publications. Wild 1 I 6lwsf Take a little equipment, an understand- ing and capable director, and a group of high school stud e nt s affected with that age-old di s ea s e known as being s tag e struck, and you have the makings of a high school dramatics club. Here at North High we have all of these: the able direc- tor, Mr. Raymond D. Merchant, the group of stage struck students, the members of Theater Guild. Besides its actors and actresses there are two other organizations that go into the make -up of Theater Guild: Paint Crew and Stage Crew. The former organization, under the direction of Mr. Clyde Jones, has the duty of making sure that the sets are suitably painted and ornamented. The Stage Crew must see to it that all the hun- dreds of problems that arise over lighting, staging, sound, wiring, etc. are all proper- ly solved. Certainly the excellent effort by both of these groups was in large part responsible for the s uc c e s s of the two Guild plays this year. Following the practice of performing a comedy or light mystery in the Fall with a heavier play for their Spring production, L.T.G. staged the Ghost Train in Octo- ber and Dickens' Great Expectations in March. An old ada ge has it that Music Hath C ha r m s to S ooth e the Savage Beast . While we at North may be a little short on savage b ea s t s , it can hardly be doubted that music, as produced by our several musical groups, hath charms to soothe most people. ln order to make soothing music, a de- gree of organization is n e c e s s a r y . In charge of this organization for band and o r c h e s t r a is Mr. Richard McCutchan. With the band organization means hours of drill on the football field sharpening the maneuvers that are to be presented be- tween the halves of Saturday's game. It means long hard practice before the an- nual band concert. It means preparing programs for the Kiwanis, Elks, and Ro- tary Clubs, as well as the Decoration Day parade and the New York State band con- test. With the orchestra, organization rep- resents the efforts that goes into playing at class nights, graduations, and L.T.G. plays. In the cases of both band and or- chestra there is but one central purpose for this organization and labor: to make the listeners to their music enjoy them- selves. In contrast to the instrumental music of band and o r che s t ra we have the vocal music of the choir and chorus. This year organization for choir and chorus took a radically different form. A full length op- eretta entitled In Old Louisiana was staged in April. It was the story of a Mississippi river boat captain and the struggle of his adopted daughter to find romance in pre-Civil War Louisiana. In addition to this piece de resistance, chorus and choir performed their regular duty of singing at assemblies. North's pigskin warriors finished their 1952 season with a record of 6 victories, l loss, and 1 tie. This record gave the Blue and Scarlet a second place tie in the final conference standings. The warriors toppled Utica Proctor for their first '52 victory., Midway in the first period the Indians got their first touchdown of the campaign ona Nugent to Rasmussen pitchout that resulted in a jump pass from Rasmussen to end Frank Petro in the end zone. A strong Utica Proctor passing attack then started to click as they drove to a 14-7 lead. A Nugent pass to Joe Kim- mel supplied the second Indian score. Ed Garbarino latched onto another Nugent pass and scampered some twenty yards into the end zone to gain the margin of victory. A strong Elmira Free Academy eleven handed the warriors their only setback of the season. The Indians never really got started as the Blue Devils streaked through our defenses to nail Indian ball-carriers before they hit the line of scrimmage in handing us a 14-0 loss. The Orange Tornado of Union-Endicott matched the Indians blow for blow in a hard fought ball game that ended in a 6-6 deadlock. Trailing 6-0 in the final stanza the Red and Blue Warriors marched 72 yards for the equalizer. Ronnie Rasmus- sen climaxed the drive by crashing through right tackle for the score. Al Stephens, Ron Rasmussen, Mike Nugent, Pete Millspaugh, Joe Kimmel, Bob Michalick, Frank Petro, Jimmy Strain and Joe Dimashio were the out- standing offensive threats of the season. The accurate rifle-arms of Nugent and Dirnashio hit Kimmel and Petro for the scores and long gains that meant the dif- ference between victory and defeat more than once. Joe Kimmel and Dick Murphy led the braves on the defense. Murphy was a constant mainstay at the middle of the line while Kimmel was the always dependable end. Kimmel reached his peak in the Central clash when he broke through time after time to smear opposing ball carriers. Dick Bell, Frank Leo, George Gamble, Rusty Arnold, Jim Polizotto, Jerry Ed- wards, and Tony Capozzi also deserve a lot of credit for their fine defensive play. 65 6 I L fziifliiiglf .s-s,, ,. The Indians traveled to Middletown where they romped to an easy 19-O victory. Jimmy Strain crashed over from the one yard line to bring home the first scalp. Big Pete Millspaugh broke loose for a 54 yard run and the second T.D. of the after- noon. Rifle-armed Mike Nugent passed to Frank Petro to put the game on ice. Ras- mussen plunged through the center of the Middletown line for the only successful conversion of the day. An underdog North eleven next traveled to Ithaca where they thoroughly trounced the Little Redmen 19-6. Pete Millspaugh got things started with the first score of the game. Al Stephens picked up a second score as the climax to a drive of some 16 plays. After the Ithacans picked up a tally, Jimmy Strain scooped up a fumble and raced across the goal line for the final score of the day. The annual North-Central gridironclas- sic was once againthe highlight of the sea- son. The Indians led all the way, never trailing, and holding a 12-0 lead mid-way through the final stanza. Late in the fourth period the Bulldogs did manage to gain one T.D. and spoil the warriors shutout. Jim- my Strain was the running standout of the day, averaging nearly ten yards per carry. Elmira Southside's Green Hornets be- came the Indian's fifth victim as quarter- back Joe Dimashio scored two touchdowns. After the southsider's drew first blood, Dimashio picked up his first score. With twenty seconds left in the third period, .Dimashio scooted over for the winning score that made the final read 13-7, North. The maroon Wildcats of Johnson City were not so wild as they have appeared in past years, falling before the whooping Indians 19-14. In a terrifically hard fought game that featured J.C.'s huge hammering line and North's small hammering line the Warriors came through when the chips were down to complete their 1952 season with a long over-due triumph that blotted out all past J.C. victories. Much of the credit for the thorough de- velopment of the Indian squad and for the success of the squad rnust go to coaches Gordie O'Reilly and Fred Hawke who were most diligent and most thorough in their instructions. 6 if on Wghligbh Who's got the ball? Among these only a few had had previous experience. The majority of the work fell upon the shoulders of new and inexperienced boys. At the beginning of the season the North High squad did not show too much talent. The squad did manage to beat Greene in a duel meet held there., However at the invitational meet held at Utica the squad placed thir- teenth. This did not discourage our Braves however for when the triangular meet rolled around with Waterloo and Johnson City, our squad placed second. In the Triple Cities meet, North placed third, while at the Vestal Invitational meet they placed fifth. For the first time in six years a North High squad lost adual meet, this meet was with Ithaca. In the sectional meets North slipped into a very neat third place. At the Intersectional Meets in Schenectady North was represented by Sam Sariti, Roger Scism, and John McCauley. These boys made a fine show- ing for the North High Indians. Coach John Sasinek feels very optimistic over the future of his squad. Next year he feels that because there will be many candidates with experience the squad will have an excellent season. Seven squad members earned their let- ters for Cross Country. These warriors are: Jim Pratt, Roger Scism, Don Ed- wards, John McCauley, Sam Sariti, Jack Jones, and George Kenefick. The North High bowling squad won 6 and lost 18 during their '52-'53 season. Vic Mastronardi, Bob Struck, and Ed Knauf led the Indian Keglers, with Mastronardi hit- ting the highest triple of the season. North's volleyball squad won 12 and lost I5 in r e gula r league competition. In a special meet with Norwich the warriors won3 and lost Z. Some of the other teams played were U. E., J. C., and Central. L eading spikers were Joe Kimmel and John Sherer assisted by Earl Rickerson and Bernie Davis as setters. When track season rolled around prospects for the 1953 squad did not come up to par with previous years. Coach John Reutlinger had only three lettermen returning to give the squad the needed experience. Half-miler John Deinhardt, discus hurler and high-jumper Don Gallagher, and discus hurler-relay man-broad jumper Al Stephens provided the only real proven ability. Others that returned from the '52 campaign with some experience were miler Roger Scism, pole vaulter Frank Wescott, and sprinter Ed Garbarino. Still, the season did not look completely bad for coach Reutlinger and the rugged schedule he was facing, for he had several fellows that he deemed as likely pro- spects. Among the sprinters were Tony Monforte, Jim Strain, Jack Decker, Bill Conroy, and Tippy Mion. Joe Reynolds looked as though he might work along with Gallagher in the high jump competition., George Kenefick was running a pretty good half-mile, while John Sherer, Herb Shepard, Phil Evans, and Sam Sariti were prac- ticing for the quarter mile event. Juniors John McCauley and Chuck Holovka were the immediate understudies to the graduate Roger Scismg Joe Kimmel, Don Cham- bers, and Neil Dominick could be seen heaving the shot and discus almost every afternoon. Mike Bishop, Phil Fotorny, and Jack Decker were working over the hurdles in most of the pre-season practice sessions. With all these prospects, the Blue and Scarlet should have had a fairly successful season. 77 6ir s Spam' 1, N CLUB -First row: Sandy Woodrow, Marie Mariani, Sondra Clarke, Mal Jones, Emma Kipper. The girls' sports season got off to a flying start early inthe Fall term with the formation of soccer and fieldball teams. On many afternoons when long streams of students flowed rapidly toward buses parked in front of the school, loyal femi- nine participants in the sports program donned their pastel gym suits and dashed for the field in back of the school. Small groups of onlookers applauded from the sidelines as goals were made and points were scored, When the rigors of weather forced the sports program indoors, types of activity were expanded. Several afternoon pep assemblies were held in the auditorium capably directed by a fine cheerleading squad. Anne King and her cohorts in their royal blue and scarlet uniforms put an enthusiasm into the student body which made the very walls echo with rousing cheers. At the games on Saturday after- 79 noons their leadership helped the team on to victory. Basketball occupied the attention of girl athletes from late Fall to early Spring. When the call was issued for participants, so many girls responded that nine teams were organized. These nine teams were then divided into two leagues to compete against each other. Captains were Madge Ostrander, Sandra G a r dn e r , Beverly Clarke, Joanne Kukol, Eileen Lalley, Bar- bara Chaffee, Tonia Transue, Rita Emilio, and Anne King. The culmination of all girls' sports activity in North is membership in G.A.A. and N Club. To become eligible for G.A.A. one must earnthe required number of points by refereeing games or by play- ing on the various teams. When a girl earns her athletic emblem, she auto- matically becomesa member of N Club. QPHWWKWRW ff' N.. M . -H Q, , N ' 'V i as ? --uma xv T . 4 . ,Q I Q! Coach Charlie Howland is hoping for a winning season and if his pitching shapes hp he should have it. With one or possibly :wo exceptions, this year's squad looks as good as any other in the conference. With Lettermen, Ron Otero,Arnie Beletsky, Ron Rasmussen and Mike Nugent to provide the needed experience the Indian nine should mold its own. Competition has been the :ig thing in early practice sessions, Tony l'ewes and Bill Kniffen have been fighting for the first base position. Ronnie Otero and Pete Merrill have also been giving each other plenty of trouble in the attempt zo nail down the hot corner. Beletsky, Chubby Pasquale, and Jerry Dukerich have been competing for the second base and shortstop positions. In the outfield Coach Howland is again faced with an abundance Jf talent with Bob Stoddard, Don Kenesky, George Gamble and Tony Testani all seek- .ng first string position. Harry Cole and Jim Polizotto are making attempt to nudge Mike Nugent out from behind the plate. Bill Hunt, Ron Rasmussen and Arnie Be- letsky are all seeking that opening for pitcher assignment, With all this competi- tion among sixteen candidates you can see why Coach Howland believes his squad capable of being on winning lead. When deadline time rolled around and we received our yearly ultimatum Coach Oz Winter's Jr. Varsity squad had not had sufficient time in which to display their talents. However from all available indi- cations it appears as though the J.V.s should also finish their season in the win column. The large turnout of candidates should contain many talented prospects. The Jr. Varsity has a new home this sea- son, the elimination of the Bevier Street diamond has made it necessary for Coach Winters to set new headquarters at Stow Flats.
