Wg, How the memories rush back as we turn the pages of our book for 752wthat Latin assignment which never did get done, the test in chemistry that made us formula automatons for a day, tl1e memorization of historical facts to impress the teacher or prepare for that terrible comprehensive, the mountains and mountains of home work . . . Wie thought that we never would survive, but somehow the will to live is very strong . . . There was the lighter side, too . . . Color Day with its profusion of reds and blues and the Indian emphasis, the day we decorated the Christmas tree in the Main Corridor, preparing the ceramics display for the night when our parents came to visit the school . . . all these, and more, too . . . The soft lights and the sweet music at the Senior Prom, the excitement of the tag sales, the demon- stration of archery in the assembly, the costuming and staging of Annie Laurie, basketball and football games, promenading in the halls during the noon hour . . . Yes, it was all fun, and weire both glad and sorry to have it come to an end. Wie can never entirely forget the excitement and monotony, the fun and the tragedy, the joys and the disap- pointments, the achievements and the failures which sum up the school year of l95l-52 at North. Mrs. Georgia McCall has guided many North people through the intricacies of the Latin Re- gents. She has aided students in their efforts to solve the mysteries of Caesar and Cicero since the opening of North High School in 1937. Not only has she inspired her pupils with Vivid pictures of the glory that was Rome, but she has also taught them some of the valuable lessons which life must teach. Her calm, quiet attitude, and her gentle under- standing of the problems which face teenagers have endeared her to students who never were in her classroom. North High is indeed fortunate, and the Wampum Staff is extremely proud to have known Mrs. McCall as a teacher, counselor, and friend. In . I 0 0 H. EARL WEAVER, Principal It seems impossible, but it is true, that many of the present students were not born when North High School was conceived. I remember that., when I was asked to be its principal, I was delighted to lay the plans for this school and its student body. I have always felt that our slogan The Friendly School is deserved because few schools have the pleasant relations between faculty and students that we have at North High School. The terraces are now all filled in at North. On my first visit to the school, I had to climb an eighteen-foot ladder to get in the front entrance. I also remember when it was necessary to climb the scaffolding for the gymnasium plastering in order to point out the place where the basketball brackets might be hooked on. Most of all I think I remember the students who have graduated from North and the teachers with whom I have been privileged to work. Our nickname The Indians was not unearned. The Indian motif had been set for the school. We were then fortunate enough to have Mr. Robert Redman as our first football coach, and his name further established our nickname. I remember the people who participated in World War II-boys we knew inti- mately who were sacrificed for an ideal. The bricks and concrete do not make a school, they merely house it. The students and teachers working together for the good of each other make up a school. If North High School continues- as the friendly school,', our tradition will be easily maintained, and our service to the community will be more than adequate. 7 l E We remember that we got to know many of our teachers outside the classroom. Clubs, sports, and other extra-curricular activities were spon- sored by them. Many times we were pleasantly surprised that teachers, too, are humans. And so we list a few of the places where we met our teach- ers on something other than the scholastic level. Art Club Baseball Basketball Cross country Football Forensic Forum G. A. A. To tl1em the end of seventh period does not mean Time to Go llome, but time for a meeting, something to put life into life and life into school. They see a meaning in study, and a goal in service and leadership, not as tinseled ideals, but as .part of their school life. They are often members of Honor Society. They have to be Junior Ns or Senior B's with an average of 4.25, or Senior A's with an average of 4.0fthen they are eligible for membership in llonor Society. Their ideals are excellence in leadership, character, service and scholarship. The society is sponsored by Nlrs. William llouli- han, Miss Elizabeth Quilter, Mr. llarold Gillespie, and Mr. Gerald Demaree. There are about sixty members of llonor Soci- ety here at North. They serve as ushers at as- semblies, hosts and hostesses at the information desk, guides for visitors at North. Wie see them in long robes, carry ing candles at their induction ceremonies in the auditorium, we know them as our friends, as very real people. Our guarantee is the Honor Society label. Enjoyment is the reason for music, and if North is an example we get as much fun out of making music as we do from listening to it. We at North have ev music. We have band and orchestra, and our in- strumental quartet, all under the baton of our own Mr. Richard McCutchan. We have choir, chorus, and the more specialized girls' trio, which requires that you be feminine to belong. These vocal groups are dire t d ' ' burn. And if ery opportunity to make c e by Miss Marion Thorn- making music for music's sake is not ou get a fifty-yard line enough, join the band. Y seat at all the football games, and you see and hear all band concerts-but bring your horn ' h wit you. Orchestra members sit in on all LTC la s P Y while providing the music for them. They also play at graduation ceremonies. At Christmas ti me and during the spring is when we know choir best. In last vear's Christmas assembly the choir formed a living, carol-singing Christmas tree. The girls' trio was there too, in their sleigh, accompanied by a calm and silent snowman. The city-wide concert and music festi- val in March extends the range of our choir out- side the walls of our school. Music such as this h l s ou d be appreciated by us laymen. When the Coun- cil was set up, its official business was to regulate rights, privileges, and financial expenditures of students and student organizations. Quite natu- rally it has become one of our best-known and most influential organizations. Among the flurry of a double-billing of assem- blies, two elections, and a profusion of posters, Student Council once each term wages electoral war, and when the dust has settled, four happy victors stand in the center of attention for a few days, and in the heart of North for the rest of the 5' ' 'J Smith. term. The tag sale comes a little later, with homeroom 6403 having sold I00fZp, and with last term's tags appearing on jackets along with three of the new ones, and some more from a year ago with these. In a week or so the tags on jackets dwindle 011' to one or two and are forgotten. But we don't forget Student Council. All year long the Council is at work, doing the things that must be done, like last fall's campaign for new uniforms for the cheerleaders. And always, mak- ing it congenially possible for students and teach- ers to live together, making campaign promises once each term, providing assemblies to entertain us and help us skip a class, we have our Student Council. LITTLE THEATRE GUILD The Drama is an elusive thing, but also a very romantic one. It is easy to be a high school student -all you have to do is grow. It is easier to be stage-struck-all you have to do is be a high school student. Here at North we have a place for sta e- struck students, affectionately called LTCg, and officially known as Little Theatre Guild, our dramatics or anization. With a littie imagination we can see LTG as an infant or anization under the directorship of Mr. Raymond Merchant, progressing by bounds from their first season, with a goal called Quality Drama not very far ahead of them, and a will to bring it back. Judging from the current season, Quality Drama is here to stay. The Guild's fall lay was a mystery called The Strawhatter's Case, with a cast made up of Joan Fletcher, Betsy Macey, Ellen Faber, Sandra Jamieson, Mary Neill, Anita Pope, Nancy Jamieson, Mary Jane Lane, Joan Macey, Frances Wilson, Sandra Winterburger, Barbara Payne, Tom Shirhall, Roger Chandler, James Friedgen, Jerry Brennan, Sidney Doolittle, Jim Kaleka, Larry Gray, Jim Shurtleff, Glenn Van Tassel, James Shramek, John Poppeliers, and Stan Pylipow. The spring play was a production of beautiful Annie Laurie. In its cast were Joan Fletcher, Betsy Macey, Roger Chandler, Sandra Winter- burger, Joan Macey, Ellen Faber, Lorraine Koslowski, Joanne Kukol, Nancy Jamieson, Audrey Lou Benn, Frances Wilson, June Thomp- son, Barbara Florence, Larry Gray, Sidney Doo- little, Dick Tedeschi, James Shramek, Jim Kaleka, James Friedgen, Glenn Van Tassel, and Clark Bailey. Poring over an old yearbook, or a new one, is somethin like rummaging through old chests in an attic. Seeing the faces of former friends, recall- ing a dance or football game where we had the time of our lives, is reliving something that hap- pened a year ago or ten years ago. But behind the scenes our yearbook staff is not thinking in terms of the past. They are re-creating something that happened yesterday, or will hap- pen- tomorrow. They are working in and for the present. It is only after the yearbook is at the printer's that the staff can quietly read old books or discuss the new one. And when the printed book arrives, they have created a work for the sentimentalist. Why not? It was created by a staff of 'sentimental- ists. 1,1 .M- BUSINESS STAFF-Aboveflfirst row: Bar- bara Benjaniin, Margaret Savercool. Second row: Sally Priestly, Pat Nlesick, Beverly Bald- win. The whole staff aids in the sponsorship of fund-raising bake sales, and in the annual May Queen dance, but there is no halo of romance surrounding any of this work. There is, however, a certain satisfaction in see- ing a piece of finished copy, neat and uniform, and in seeing mounted photographs and art work on a completed layout, readyfor the printer. There is even more satisfaction in seein piles of finished newspapers, ready to be distriiuted, when you know that inside is your master work, polished and perfect. Eight weeks later these same In- dians trotted off the Elmira Free Academy field as a group of pigskin veterans. Strangely enough, these were the only games the warriors dropped. In the Union Endicott game, defensive backs Al Stephens and Bobby Stout proved to be real offensive material as the O,Reillymen eked out a 15-7 victory over the Orange Tornado. In the final period the Red and Blue grabbed two touchdowns. One came when Murphy crashed over to climax a 65 yard drive. The other came via an interception and 25-yard run-back by little Bobby Stout. North rolled over Middletown with its greatest margin of victory in 4 seasons. Browne, Nugent, Barber, Criscitello, and Kimmel each brought home one scalp and Frank Petro came across twice for a grand total of seven touchdowns and 45 omts. P A Nugent to Browne pass netted one touchdown in the Madison game. An 87 yard run by Frank Petro netted a second and on an off-tackle play by Joe Criscitello brought the Indian tally to 20 while the Madison gridders were able to net but 13. The big Central ame featured some of the season's most inspired play. Joe Crisci- tello went over eariy in the first period to take scoring honors for the day. The big North line featuring Lisick, I-Ieartly, and Yevchinecz stole the spotlight by holding Central in their own territory, until the final seconds when they .fina ly crossed the midstri e. The iiinal record read one tie, two losses, and five big victories which is an enviable record in anyone's book. As always the fine, enthusiastic coaching of Gordie O'Reilly played a tremendous role in developing such a fine, fighting squad. 1. 1 .S -,-- ,. , VARSITY-First row: R. Stout, R. Arnold, E. JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL Coach Charlie Howland led his J. V.'s to their second consecutive Junior Varsity Football Championship. The Indian Juniors won six of their eight contests losing only to Johnson City and Union Endicott. Pete Millspaugh, starting fullback, looked like Varsity material as he cut and wig- gled his way throughout the opposition. The sign 1 calling was shared by two other promising starters, Pete Merrill and Harold Cole. Both did great jobs as they di- rected the team on the playing field. The remainder of the call-carrying was left to the following quartet of halfbacks: Vic Lorenz, John Mlcuch, Bob Mikelik, and Jim Strain. V The Indian papooses started the season off at a fast pace as they walloped Vestal in the opening game 44-0. However the next week the Maroon Cubs of Johnson City eked out a 12-6 victory over the Blue and Scarlet. This ended the Indians lossf until they dropped their seventh game of the season to Union Endicott 14-7. J. V. FOOTBALL--First row: J. Mlcuch, J. Polizotto, F. Stepanik, B. Aswad, T. Dellapenna P. To begin with, they started off on the wrong foot when they were defeated by Johnson City, 69-59. Ithaca gave them another loss to add to this record when they whipped the Northerners 55-47. Although the season was dark for the Indians, they managed to make a magnificent comeback when they racked up 61 points against Cortland and stole the game by only one point. Elmira Southside was another team that felt our pull when Murphy and Pratt scored 30 points and chalked up a 67-37 win. The Southsiders used a full count press and things were looking bad for the warriors, but as the score shows, the braves soon had a substantial lead. We managed to pull through the season after losing our stars Fred Murphy and Dick Knauf in the ' J hn January. graduation. This game was a duel of field and foul shots' and ended in a 39-22 victory. The second game played by the little Redmen was with Ithaca, but this game was not so successful. The Northerners were pressed for time because of a slow start and as a result were de- feated by eleven points. The next few games were wins. They cap- tured Cortland and Elmira Southside and had full command of the court. The meet with Cortland ended in one of the J.V.'s most successful games when the little Redmen scored 59 points against Cortland's 26. North, as a whole, presented the courts with a fine team this season. The Indians won 11 and lost 5 games, with Mills- paugh, Knauf, Strain and Rasmussen helping to put them in third place in the Conference league. 63 as .rf , r v: 1 , s a - ': J- Strain - ff' ,g.',,i71?E2i'E:5c . These noisy girls, who are admitted to the Club once a year, have a reserved section at the games. Their task is to help the cheerleaders cheer the warriors on to victory. In their red and blue beanies and waving shakers, the Pep Club has been a traditional organization ever since our school has existed. Through this group of cheering girls, we display to the public the good sportsman ship with which all games are played. CHEERLEADERS Cheerleaders and baton twirlers are two of the most active and colorful groups on the North High grounds. They not only lead the students on the football field, but they also take part in assemblies, basketball games and pep rallies. Their cheering and yells are entirely original and they are responsible for our fine sportsmanship. The baton twirlers also add to the brilliance and prestige of North. The talents displayed by this colorful array of pretty girls with their nimble fingers helps to inspire the boys to victory. The cheerleaders and baton twirlers are truly the key to the success of the North teams. CHEER LEADERS-S. Kingsbury, M. Galli, B. Boyd, B. Beam, L. Ditzler, R. Davis, C. Warren. BATON TWIRLERS-J. Coach Howland will.start off by placing Fran Genarelli on the mound to lead his power-packed group of Redmen to the top. Ron Rasmussen and Leo Schnurbusch are Howland's ace infielders, Bob Stoddard his batting star. With these men and a good bat and ball we hope to capture first place in the Southern Tier Conference, which starts April 25 with North combatting U-E. The J. V. baseball team, under the direction of Oz Winters, is one of the largest teams ever organized by North. We hope that, since it is the largest, it will also be the best, and that these boys will prove to be valuable material for next season's Varsity team.
