Or those when we attended plays, musicales, or merely strolled about the school during leisure time? Even though these some days may have for most of us, held some unpleasant moments, they will be looked back upon as among the best years of our lives. Following graduation, the majority of us will go out into life to put into practical use the knowledge pro- cured in these seemingly long years of schooling. lt is quite probable that the paths of many of us will never cross again. Realizing the difficulty of remembering events and personages, the Wampum Staff hos com- piled, between these covers, o summary of school life for this momentous year. We trust that it will aid you in recalling fond memories of this World of North. Uediccztion Men and women the world over are admired by everyone for the success they have attained, and they are remembered for a kind deed or a friendly word given to their associates. So, Miss Heffron, our advisor for several years, endeared herself to our hearts when she very capably and unselfishly gave her time and sustained effort to guide the policies of our yearbook. To Miss Heffron, of an understanding ond friendly nature, we, the staff, gratefully dedicate the i948 Wampum. Page Five Table of Contents Faculty . . Seniors . Ba nd Mr. Richard McCutchan, North's in- strumental Music director, was wel- comed back by the North High Band after returning from military service. Another Welcome Home, the lOth An- nual Band Reunion, was held during the first assembly of the fall term. One of the highlights of the annual Spring Concert by the band, which so faith- fully supported our victorious football team, was first rendition in the Triple Cities area of the Berlioz Grand Sym- phony. Orchestra The pupils and teachers of Port Dick School were favored this April by a concert given by our North High Or- chestra under the direction of Mr. McCutchan. The hard working mem- bers of this organization entertain you during the intermissions of Little Theater Guild as well as providing a musical background for these produc- tions. The orchestra also plays at many special assemblies and at all gradua- tions. reczselmint and Pride and Preiudice Helen Jerome's play, Pride and Prejudice, was very successfully staged by the members of the Little Theater Guild. Early nineteenth century England, at which place and time, marriage was the only possible career for women, served as a setting for this produc- tion. The plot revolved around a mother's frantic and determined efforts to marry off her three lovely but somewhat unwilling daughters and thus spare them from the shame of spinsterhood. Wampum The North High Wampum staff worked diligently this year under the supervision of Mr. Webster Haight, carefully carrying out the various inter- esting, but sometimes tedious, tasks which go to make up a yearbook. A rousing advertising campaign was held during the week of March l3 which included movies, music and speeches to inform the student body about the Wampum. Mrs. Betty Gordon served in the capacity of faculty advisor to the business staff and Mr. Charles Ko- necny was the chief factor in making possible the numerous pictures for the yearbook. Together with these helpful people, the editor-in-chief, Eleanore Thim, and her many assistants strove to make the l948 Wampum the best ever printed. The team cap- tured the Binghamton Press Trophy and the Babcock Trophy. The mighty eleven also overran its only non-conference opponent, Utica Proctor. After the game, football fans were talking about Red Grange and his num- ber 77, which is also Hanifin's jersey number. North 19, Union Endicott 18-Oct. 4 Eight thousand fans saw the Redmen scalp their second victim, U.E., with three T.D. passes thrown by Q.B. Don Hogan, first to Gar- barino on the 15-yard stripe, then to Clark on the thirty, and to Hanifin on the 5. Mica1izzi's conversion gave the Indians the point that won them the game. North 32, Utica Proctor 12-Oct. 13 A Columbus Day crowd of 5,500 saw North trailing at the end of the first quarter, 12-6, with the first T.D. scored by Hogan. But the Indians came back for a big third quarter. Hanifin went around right end for a tally. Wil- son converted. Petro went over next on a pass from Hanifin. Hogan passed to Garbarino in the end zone for another T.D. Chuck Fox set up the last tally when he blocked a punt, scooped it up and dashed to the one-yard line where he was stopped from behind. Petro then carried it over. A North 19, Elmira Free Academy 0-Oct. 18 Jerry Hanifin scored North's first tally from E.F.A.'s 4-yard line. Petro made the second on a buck. Then Hanifin caught a kick, fumbled it, picked it up, and dashed 78 yards down the sidelines. A1 Heggelke converted. A fourth T.D. was almost scored, but North fumbled on the 1 foot line. North 26, Central 6-Nov. I 8,000 fans turned out to see this traditional game. Central scored in the first quarter to lead 6-0. North came back in the second when Petro crashed over from the l -yard line. Hani- fin converted. Half-time, North 7-Central 6. North scored again in the third period when Petro went over from the 3 and Wilson con- verted. ln the fourth, Hanifin went off left tackle for another tally. Hogan intercepted a Bulldog pass and ran to the one, where he was tackled. A pass from Hogan to Garbarino in the end zone completed the T.D. North 6, Johnson City 6-Nov. 8 This all-important game was fought on a battlefield of snow and slush. ln the first period J.C. scored a touchdown on a march from our 23-yard line. Johnston smeared the extra point attempt. ln the third, Deinhardt recovered a J.C. fumble on North's 33. Hanifin took it to the 4l, Petro to the 48. Hanifin again went to J.C.'c 44, Petro to the 34. Kenny Wilson broke loose and went over for the T.D. Hogan's conversion was stopped. The game ended with North in possession of the ball on J.C.'s 47. Z7-Elmira Southside Determined that they would not lose the championship, the Indians took the measure of Elmira Southside. Led by John DonneIly's I6 points and Ben Clarke's IO, the Northmen ended up in front, 62-39. Mo rch 5-Endicott Ending the conference season in a blaze of glory the Indians virtually slaughtered a very weak U.E. team, 71-35. This game was prob- ably the most exciting played all season, not only for the team, because it meant the first championship team North has ever had, but also for Bucky Roche, North star forward. March 6-Hornell Still pepped up from winning the champion- ship, and also governed by the thought of gaining revenge for a mid-seasan setback, the Big Red Indians climaxed the regular season with hard earned victory from the Red Raiders from Hornell. Buck Roche with 20 points, and John Donnelly with I I, led the scoring parade, however, much praise goes to Ben Clarke. Even though he had only 8 counters he made all of them in the last quarter and they were instrumental in keeping North ahead in the 59-54 contest. March I 3-Johnson City Even champions are upset, and such was the case in the Section IV playoff game with the J.C. Wildcats. Fighting hard to overcome an early deficit, the Indians could not seem to overtake the Maroon team, falling 2 points short in the end. Roche, Donnelly and Clarke led the crusade, hitting for ZI, II and IO points, respectively, but their efforts were in vain, as the game ended 54-52. Taseball This year Coach Nichols has built his team around six lettermen from last year's nine. The mainstays in- clude Buck Roche, John Donnelly, Vince Garbarino, Jack Ronk, Ron Ferrell and Mike Durkot. These men could form the nucleus of a championship team be- cause they hold down the key positions on the field, and so, with some strong support, North can be the team to beat this year. Vince Garbarino at first, Mike Durkot at short and John Donnelly and Ron Ferrell in the outer garden are a great resource. Along the hit- ting line Vince Garbarino paves the way with Roche and Donnelly following through. Of course we must not forget the rookies on this year's squad. Making bids for position are Dick Crago, Ivan Shay, Wally Gow, Joe Giannettoand Jerry Durkot. With a team composed of players like these, we at North are bound to be proud of the record that this year's baseball team will establish. . iContinued on Page 681 LEFT, JUNIOR VARSITY. Vince Garbarino garnered two triples in four tries, and Red Ferrell had two hits in three official trips to bat to help bring up the score. Held scoreless for the first seven innings, the North Diamond Men bunched in seven during the last two frames to defeat Elmira Free Academy 7-3. Adele McDevitt held the top rung for the longest time. In the doubles tournament, the winners were Betty Bitting and Betty Lou Hutch- ings. ABOVE, PING PONG. Golf Under the leadership of their new coach, Mr. McGinnis, the golf squad prepared to tee off against Union Endi- cott for their regular season. Coach McGinnis is building a great team for the future, although this year he banked on regulars Wiselogel, Hep- worth, Horvath, and Ferenczi to carry the burden on the fairways. These boys were supported by O'Neil and Krna, the newcomers to this year's links team. Boys' Bowling Making a strong finish, North's bowling team split the pins for third place out of a field of twelve teams in the Section Four Bowling Tournament. During the regular season, the Indians racked up seven wins as compared with seventeen losses to finish fourth. The boys who rolled the big balls this year were Bennett, Horvath, Schaffer, El- liott and Morgan. Page Seventv-One Softball The American sport of baseball is very popu- lar among the girls at North. One hundred and twenty girls signed up to play on either Mon- day and Thursday or Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. They divided into ten teams con- sisting of a captain and eleven other girls. Each team assumed the name of a state. Girls' Basketball Last fall, if you heard a bunch of business- like girls calling themselves Giants or Dodgers, you knew that they were some of the seventy-five girls who played Intramural Basketball. Pat Krause's team captured first place in the series of games. Cheerleaders At basketball and football games, specta- tors are heartened by the appearance of spar- kling red and blue uniforms. These are North's peppy cheerleaders who, with their enthusiasm, add as much to a sport as the game itself. The group consists of Varsity and J.V. squads. TOP RIGHT, GIRLS, SOFTBALL: You're out! IIKTIIUH REDEDICATION WEEK A specially designated week in November '47 brought to the attention of every freedom-minded individual the fact that homage must be paid to the memory of those who gave their all to assure us of permanent peace, and so it was that our community, with the aid of the different schools, adopted a carefully planned program in celebration of Rededication Week. The city was adorned with posters announcing the arrival of the Freedom Train, schoolteachers were kept busy teaching their students a new Pledge, the purpose of which was to re- affirm the Pledge of Allegiance which we know so well, and rattle off without careful consideration, radio stations day and night urged their listeners to reserve a little time for thought since their forefathers spent so much time fighting for the leisure which is part of our daily practice. Early in the morning of November 9, l947, the train pulled into the station to be welcomed by eager citizens who had been waiting in the cold dawn for their first sight of famous historical documents of which they had heard so much in the past. This experience may not have made good men from evil, or changed anyone's mode of life, but it did serve its purpose in this one respect, that it opened our eyes and hearts to an ideal which has survived many a war and depression to make us a nation envied by all. BELOW RIGHT, COLOR GUARD AT REDEDICATION ASSEMBLY. Lett to Right: Bruce Stauff, Robert Geiser, Robert Rounds. JOHN THOMAS INTRODUCING THE THEME FOR SPEAKING CONTEST. Below Lett, Standing: John Thomas. Seated, Lett to Right: Jerry Hanifin, Gathel Scoville, Ronald Pedrone, Elizabeth Hall. I Speak fbi' 'Democracy' I, as a former subject of complete totalitarian- ism, speak for demociracy. I am humbly grateful that I have escaped the horrors of war and per- secution and that I can now live in this wonderful country where everyone can enjoy the blessings of democracy. Because I have seen the seeds of intolerance, greed, prejudice and hatred planted among the weak, misguided and ignorant people ofa nation, and have also seen the inevitable climax which brought unspeakable terror and loss to those of all races, colors, and creeds of the entire world, l know that it is my privilege and duty to plead with you to do everything within your power to safeguard our democracy for which the builders of gnis nation have hoped, prayed, lived, and even die . We all have witnessed time and time again the terrible outcomes of the teaching of totalita- rianism, and it is up to us, the youth and future of America, to show the world what true democ- racy is and for what it stands. Ever since the birth of our nation, we have ad- vocated individualism, we have been taught that all men are created equal and are endowed by their Creator with certain inaliennable rights, and this has accounted for the enormous growth of this nation where there can be no room for in- tolerance in any form. Too few of us fully appreciate what a great blessing it is to be able to express oneself freely and to worship God in one's own fashion without fear. l know, because I have experienced the persecution of minorities, witnessed the burnings of the Temples of God and have seen not only the destruction ofthe living, but I have even seen the incited crowds demolish graves so that not even the dead could rest in peace Furthermore, l have lived through a period in which the innocent were tortured to death, concentration camps were overfilled with those who still believed in the rights of free speech and religion, and a period in which parents were deprived of their God-given rights of bringing up their children, by being forced to turn them over to organizations which taught them from earliest childhood that might is right and that anyone, including even their own parents, who contradicted that belief was regarded a traitor to the state and was to be pun- ished and tortured by methods sometimes even worse than death. This is the result of totalitarianism in which the masses leave to follow blindly their demented leaders and in which there is no room for mercy and remorse. Now we have arrived at the crossroads of des- tiny, one way leads to a better understanding not only among the people of our nation, but most important among the nations of the world, the other road can lead only to what may well be the utter destruction and even the end of all man- kind. Again, l implore the youth of America to realize fully the importance and seriousness of this critical moment, to take an active part in spreading the ideals of democracy so that the hope of the world may not be destroyed. We must ask God to give us strength and wis- dom to place ourselves in the lead in giving to the other nations a flaming example of our inter- pretation of freedom and democracy. lThe above was a speech delivered by Irene Veit, city winner of the national l Speak for Democracy contest, conducted in Bing- hamton lost October. i Q I 2 32 1 +L., R. To Mrs. Virginia Whaley of the Art Department, who has rendered invaluable criticism of the art make-up. To Mrs. Betty Gordon of the Commercial Department, who has capably managed the financial end of the subscription drive and who has directed our advertising crew in a most successful solicitation of ads. To all those in the Main, Counselors', and Attendance offices who have given so graciously of their time in answering all of our questions, and who have made school records available to us. To the home room delegates, who gave us much assistance in making the subscription campaign a success. To our advertisers, who have helped to make the book possible. To Mr. Karl West and Mr. Frank West, our printers, who, by their encouragement, have'helped us over the many rough spots that developed as the l948 Wampum was taking shape. gi Q' 'WI t on W 1 f 4 -ws.
