Histor History is the biography of the peoples of the world. The early development of civilization is taken up by Central sophomores when they study the growth of mankind through its many troubled years. Juniors study a subject closer to all of us-the life story of the United States. This includes the growth of our country and its people: the wars and prob- lems our forefathers faced to make America what it is today. Seniors continue to learn American his- tory and also study current events. The history teachers, headed by Miss Mary Gillespie, endeavor to show students how history can increase world unity through greater understanding, and how knowl- edge of this great land of ours can make us better citizens. :STORY

Because of amazing progress in the field of transpor- ition and communication, our world is much smaller than was twenty years ago. This has caused our relations 'ith other countries to become much closer and the study f languages to become increasingly essential to modern ving. Here at Central, our language department is one of the iost popular and important in the school. In the excellent Jurses otlerecl, the stuflent has a variety of choices. Miss ,losephine Rosenberg, Miss Catherine Keenan, and liss Rita Taylor teach Latin. This subject is not only valuable for its own merits, but is also helpful for learn- ing other languages. ' At the head of the French and Spanish Departments is Miss Loretta Murphy. There are three years of lfrencl: and two of Spanish offered to Central students. The pupils learn both the language and the history and geography of the country. A good knowledge of languages has proven to be im- portant in many fields of work. We should take advantage of these Fine courses available at Central.

This varied curriculum, which includes plane and solid ge- ometry, intermediate and advanced algebra, and trigonomctry, is designed to fulfill college entrance requirements. l'lane geometry is a full-year course, while trigonotnetry, advanced algebra, and solid ge- ometry are taught in one term. Intermediate algebra can be taken in one or two terms, de- pending on the requirements and ability of the student. The usefulness of math should never be underestimated: it is essential for a well- rounded education. Courses are available in chemistry and physics, a science major consists of both of these with ninth-grade biology. Mr. Roehni, better known to all as Doc, is assisted by Mr. .lohn Grace and Miss Kathryn Hyland. The most outstand- ing and enjoyable feature of the chemistry and physics courses is the laboratory period, in which fascinating experiments are performed and discussions are held. sm
