Only Two poinTs separaTed The Miners Trom Their deserving goal of success, buT raTher Than denounce The luck, we are proud To say ThaT second place in The Class B BaskeTball Tour- namenT belongs To The colors oT Blue and WhiTe. Coach Sunny Allsop, who makes iT a habiT To send Teams in The STaTe Class B TournamenT, once again produced a Team ThaT was To make cage hisTory Tor Bingham. Roaring back aTTer a greaT season in I95O, Bingham defended The Jordan Division amidsT The Tiring oT one oT The ToughesT league campaigns in hisTory. ln The league opener aT GranTsville, The GayThwaiTe led Miners walloped The Cowboys 34-24. Cyprus High School was nexT To Tall by a 37-3l game. The Miners sTepped up The pace by walloping Murray High 43-24, and Then handing Tooele High a 46-35 seTback. The win broke a TirsT place deadlock beTween The Two Teams. Bingham Then walloped The Judge Bulldogs 59-28 on The local hardwood. Ed GayThwaiTe and Bob Sanchez scored 20 poinTs each. Granfsville was beaTen Tor The second Time 46-27, by Bingham as They opened The sec- ond halT oT league play. Cyprus High, who played Themselves inTo a TiTle chance handed Bing- ham iTs TirsT seTback by a 50-46 score on The PiraTe Tloor. The Murray SmelTeriTes losT a 49-26 baTTle To Bingham ThaT broughT abouT The reTurn Bingham-Tooele go. The TirsT place in The division was once again aT sTake. There was no doubTing The Miners This Time. Bingham broke To a quick lead and increased iT To The Tune oT 52-28 aT The Tinal buzzer. ln The league Tinale, Bingham ouTclassed Judge High. Ed GayThwaiTe, who hiT Tor 3I poinTs in The game seT a new Jordan Division scoring mark. TournamenT play was The nexT ladder Tor The Miners To climb. Bingham broke Their Tour- namenT Jinx when They deTeaTed Richfield High School 50-48. The WildcaTs, wiTh a Terrific shooTing eye almosT Toppled The Miners. Moab High School, displaying a large Team, made TighT oT iT buT Bingham played Too smooThly and handed Moab a 46-40 seTback. ln The semi-finals arch rivals meT, Bingham vs. Park CiTy. BoTh had one Thing in common, ThaT being The label oT Miners, buT Trom There Bingham became less common and ordinary as They clinched a championship berTh by a 52-37 score. The Championship game was undoubTedly one oT The greaTesT in hisTory. Bingham led Through mosT of The Tiring buT Monroe's Rams edged The Miners slow buT sure. RegulaTion Time ended wiTh The score Tied 40-40. The overTime period was hard ToughT wiTh no score unTil a desperaTe, lasT second shoT dropped Through Tor The Rams. The TiTle was Theirs buT The glory was iusT as much ours.
