School Board Tlans Uuture Schooling in Gity The school hoard has been very' husy' this year with many' projects to expand and improve the school system. Some of the most important functions of the hoard included spending the four and one-half million dollars, received through the recent hond issue, where it was most needed. The site for the new Lewis and Clark junior Highschool. hetween 'l'hirteenth and Fourteenth streets on Lewis Avenue. was purchased, the con- tract let. and work started. lr is hoped it will he finished and equipped hy' the fall of 1056. The Billings Bench Elementary' School is now in operation. The site was purchased, the huilding built and equipped in the last year. On Kliles Avenue and Sixteenth Street Vvest. a site has been purchased and the contract let for another elementary' school, Poly' Drive lflementary' School gained an addition wihch was moved into in Uecemher, Between 'l'yventy'-first and 'liwenty'-second Streets north of Lewis .Xvenue another school. Burlington Avenue lflementary' School. has heen started. It will he completed hy this fall. Bids were recently' opened on additions for the Broadwater. Highland. Urchard. and Taft Ele- mentary' Schools. Plans and specifications have been completed on several ot these. lit. l,acklen is the clerk and husiness manager for the school hoard. He handles the husiness affairs, bills, writes the minutes of the meetings. and takes care of correspondence. llr. Gallagher. superintendent of schools since W37. supervises the educational program for School llistrict No. 2. He is also in charge of the hudget for operation of the schools. teacher personnel. and other similar johs. Klr. Fraser is chairman of the hoard of trustees. The hoard consists of seven memhers, llr. Cox, llr. Fraser, Nlr. Hofmann. Klr. l.aBar, Xlr. 'llhomps son. Xlr. Tiffany. and Klr, lYood. Mr. Gallagher and Kit. Lacklen do not have any voting power on the hoard so actually' they are not members. Klr. john lkiest and Xlr. Klaurice Colherg took office on the hoard this .-Xpril replacing Xlr. Thompson and Klr. 'l'ifiany' who did not seek re-election, lhe memhers of the hoard spend many' long hours at their joh of civic duty. They' are elected for a three-year term and receive no pay' for their hard work. They deserve a great deal of credit for the efficiency' of the school system.
