MARCH APRIL MAY Father John Moore These Adults Help Central Seize The Top.” Father John Moore is the new priest-director of Cen- tral. He was ordained in Ireland in 1957 and was then appointed an assistant at Sacred Heart Parish Glendive, Montana. From 1963 until he was appointed to Central in June 1967 he served as an assistant at St. Patrick's in Billings where he is now in residence. Father Moore has become familiar with student's problems. His ready smile and qui.ck wit as he mingled with the students in the halls and lunchroom have won their confidence. Teaching Ethics, Religion II, and saying Mass for the student body as well as for various teams are part of Fathers regular schedule. These, plus many unscheduled activities as well as administerial duties make long busy days. So not just by words alone but through his willingness to listen, suggest and spend time with the students, Father Moore promotes Central's Traditional Extra-effort. CENTRAL ACTIVITIES COUNCIL Two Parentoriums and joining the Community Club Awards program were the new activities for this year's Central Activities Council. The first Parentoriums, a small group discussion of parents and faculty members, concerned extra-curricular activities and the second academic policies. Officers for 1967-68 were President, Robert McCann; Vice President, Dick Brown; Secretary, Mrs. Frank Zimmerer; Treasurer, Mrs. Norma C. Whitson. ROUNDTABLE The purpose of the Billings Central Roundtable is to aid the athletic program financially and to encourage participation in all extra-curricular activities of the school. This years officers are, President, James Thelen; Vice-president, Robert H. Smith; Secretary, Ruben Day; and Treasurer, Robert Zepp. Activities of the Roundtable during 1967-1968 in- clude the Athletic banquet in April, when the Round- table gives the Frank Costello Plaque to the most inspi- rational basketball player, renovating Colton Field and track at Central and sponsoring the guest appearance of J. Misho Petkevich, Olympic skater from Great Falls. Sister Regina LAY ACTIVITIES BOARD To advise and assist the administration and pastors in Central's financial matters, a Lay Activities Board was inaugurated this year. This years accomplishments in- clude advising that the Carnival be dropped. Membership includes Father Moore priest-director, Sister Regina principal, the six Billings pastors and one man from each parish. This year the lay members are Martin Mendoza, Guadalupe; Howard Hoene, St. Thomas; Russ Roe, St. Pius X; Archie Vap, Holy Rosary; Dr. John Whittinghill, St. Patricks; and Henry Mangiantini, Little Flower. Laymen for the first board were chosen by their respective pastors. Sister Regina, principal of Billings Central seeks greater academic heights through improved methods of education. Keeping alert to new developments in edu- cation, Sister has initiated several forward looking pro- grams here, which she hopes will foster the educational growth of Central's students. Perhaps the most startling Educational innovation begun thisyear was the rotating schedule. Another first for 67-68 was the elective English program encouraged and supported by Sister Regina who taught English until last year when she became princi- pal of Billings Central. A third program promoted by the principal is the self-contained school day. This has not been achieved completely this year, but Sister hopes to continue to move in that direction. Through these and other programs Sister Regina strives to help Central stu- dents achieve academic excellence. Rt. Reverend Monsignor James J. A Fine Team; A Good Record Andy Thomas doesn't seem to like the idea of having a Laurel Locomotive on his back. Central's Rams finished off the 1968 football season with a 5 win, 3 loss overall record. They had a 4 win, 2 loss conference record, and were tied for second place in the Central Division Class A Conference. As quarterback, Jerry VanValkenburg completed 40 out of 83 passes for 920 yards. Fred Marble was high point man, scoring 9 touchdowns for 54 points. Mike MacManus had an outstanding point after touchdown record, booting 21 points out of 22 attempts. He also kicked a field goal, which gave him a total of 24 points. The Rams this year improved as a team from start to finish. From the 1967 Rams, Jerry Van Valkenburg and Phil Zeeck were chosen for positions on the All-Conference Team. Mike MacManus, Dick Ryan, and Tex Kiedrowski received honorable mention. 1967 Season Record Rams 14 Miles City 15 Rams 24 Hardin 14 Rams 0 Anaconda 13 Rams 28 Wolf Point 20 Rams 34 Livingston 8 Rams 14 Laurel 6 Rams 21 Bozeman 7 Rams 21 Butte Central 26 39 John Kiedrowski picks up a Wolf Point Wolf to stop him from picking up more yardage in the Homecoming game. Adrenalin rapidly rushes through Jerry Van Valkenburg's system as he winds up to tackle a Hardin pass receiver. The Cross Country, Central's newest sport, is a two-mile run over different types of terrain. A team of nineteen, seven of whom were var- sity lettermen, participated in the six invitational meets. The fastest runner this year was Tom Ham who placed ninth at State with an out- standing time of 10 minutes and 35 seconds. The State meet in Missoula provided a cooling atmosphere of below zero weather. Ted Agnew spurts by a Livingston runner. Cross Country Opens To “On Your Mark, Get Set, Go.” Tom Ham rightfully earns the title The Fastest Runner. Rams Experienced An Up-And-Down Season Ram basketball got off to a slow start this sea- son, but the team kept their fighting spirit up to the end. A new coach and a young inexperienced team continued to improve as a working unit throughout the season. The Rams finished with a conference record of 7 wins and 11 losses, and a season record of 8 wins and 15 losses. The Division I tournament in Great Falls saw the Rams lose their first game to the Havre Blue Ponies and beat Great Falls Central in the second game. The third game generated the greatest excitement and the greatest disappointment. Coming from 20 points behind, the Rams took a 10 point lead over the Rustlers, only to fall behind in the final seconds. Alan Campbell, high point man of the season, was honored by being chosen to the All-tournament team at the Division I Tournament. Tom Degel received honorable mention.
