S ’66 Rambler Billings Central High School Billings, Montana Most Reverend William J. Condon Diocese of Great Falls Shortly before dawn, 5:23 A. M., Mountain Standard Time, December 8, 1965 the post- conciliar age began. Into this age, Pope Paul launched the Church with renewed vigor, saying Never before, perhaps, has the church felt the need to know, to draw near to, to understand, to penetrate, serve and evangelize the society in which she lives; and to come to grips with it, almost to run after it, in its rapid and continuous change. Representing the people of God in the Diocese of Great Falls, Bishop Condon voted with 2, 400 other bishops on sixteen documents--four constitu- tions, nine decrees, and three declarations-- which will bring the Church into the ranks of modem living man. Among these are constitu- tions on the liturgy, the nature of the Church, the Church in the modem world; decrees on social communications, ecumenism, pastoral duties of bishops, renovation of the life of religious men and women, seminaries, the lay apostolate, missions and the priestly life and ministry; and declarations on the relations of the Church with non-Christian religions, Christian education and religious liberty. Most Reverend Eldon B. Schuster Auxiliary Bishop Diocese of Great Falls To Bishop Condon, Bishop Schuster and other bishops, and to each one of us, is entrusted the task of implementing these documents. In a sense, the work of the Council has just begun; we, together with the bishops, must carry it on. The council's accomplishments are particularly notable, too, because of the time in which they were achieved. A time in which men in Vietnam, in Red China and Russia, in the hungry nations of Asia, in strife-tom Rhodesia, in secularist Europe, in materialistic America, in marches and demon- strations, mental hospitals, in prisons, in reform schools, on street comers; the person beside you in class, ahead of you in the hall, ignored, for- gotten, scorned, cry out in a thunderous roar and cannot be ignored for they are calling from the depths of the human heart. The Church has entered into the world to be a servant to men, and in doing so has made it necessary for us to be servants to our brothers. Rev. Harold Arbanas, Superintendent a living inspiration to the students As the Class of '66 we hold a special place in the heart of Father Arbanas. We began together at Central, we as freshmen, Father as superintendent. Thank you, Father, for your enthusiasm, sincere interest and stick-to-itiveness. Without you our school years here would have lacked that special extra effort you gave so freely. We hope, Father, that this time has been as enjoyable and inspiring for you as it has been for us. Sister Mary Lenore, Principal a mom away from Mom Central students and their problems--academic, spiritual, personal--find in Sister Mary Lenore a sypathetic listener and good adviser. She has a personal feeling for each student and seeks clear, positive growth for each. Sister, who is much more than a dispenser of absentee slips, aspirin and chapel veils is truly dedicated to Central. Rt. Rev. Msgr. Andrew Zarek Rev. Eugene Gergen St. Pius X Holy Rosary Rev. Harold Conely Little Flower (NOT PICTURED) Rev. Raymond Knopp, OMI Our Lady of Guadalupe Rt. Rev. Msgr. James Donovan St. Patrick's Rev. Thomas Powers St. Thomas the Apostle the time of our lives Time flies. Seniors wonder where their high school years went. Examinations were passed and failed. Prayers were said and not said. Football games were won and lost. These things fade in importance and only one question stands out: Have I grown mentally, spiritually, physically? RAMBLER 1966 will recall to us this Time of Our Lives. It will bring to mind the times we prayed, we studied, we cheered. Do you remember.. . Morose Mondays and flamboyant Fridays. . . Bursting out of class - room doors. .. Daydreaming out of sunny windows... Hurried hellos between classes... The simplicity of a pre- viously obscured sub- ject. .. Giggling groups moving in mass down halls. . . Comfortable touch of an old book.. . The tight knot under your ribs when the score is close. . . Satisfaction of a test stud- ied for... Smell of wet coats on a musty day.. . Clang of lockers.. . The proudest time of tire scholastic year is when those of outstanding intellectual promise and achievement are honored. This year, the National Merit Scholarship Examination singled out for recognition Dave Robertson, Pam Marron, Sharon Solomon, Margaret Garcia, Barb Dugan, Janelle Frost, Marie Carroll and Kathy Campau as ranking in the top two percent of all seniors taking the test. Highest honors went to Margaret Garcia (lower left) and Kathy Campau (lower right) who placed in the upper two-thirds of one percent of the participants. Homecoming Artistry and application of the theme merited a first prize for the junior class float. Determination and that extra effort save the Rams a satisfying 19-0 victory over Wolf Point. i Tom Saubert checks in at the Homecoming dance while Laurie Taylor looks on appro-, ingly. Guests were issued a gold key mementofio remind them for years of this Homecoming. Hard work and ingenuity helpec| carry out the theme of Homeco freshman floats, respectively with the JB's stagecoach, helpe | the success it was. the clubs and classes ming '65. The senior and shown above, combined to make Hqmecoming HOW THE WEST WAS WON burning leaves golden trees wild exuberance at every touchdown blaze of green-and-white whoops and hollers the color and luxuriance of royalty the last for seniors, first for freshmen excitement of the parade That extra effort of the students, and the team made every endeavor a success. Surely this was Homecoming 1965 Training students to accept their civil responsi- bilities is important yet difficult to achieve. Mike Kenney exercises the privilege and duty of voting. With precision and craftsmanship, Don Sticka completes work on his art assignment. Mary Soltero and Mike McCleary laugh at Bob Cline's description of Mrs. Hudson's English III class. But Sharon O'Leary is amazed that anyone would laugh at Bob. Losing no time, Vicki Martinson intently finishes sewing her dress in Sewing I. Studying negatives requires much concen- tration as Dave Jonchowski demonstrates by his intent examination of them. The newly-ruled black- boards in Bookkeeping class make it convenient for Doug Rausch to demonstrate his accounting skill. 11 Aristopheries' The Birds I have heard of your city, and I have composed a few small verses in its honor. They are small, but splendid, remarks The Poet (Margaret Garcia) to Euelpedes (Cody Montalban Mont alb an). See, I ain't such a fat- head, snarls Hercules (Dennis Powers) to his Uncle Npetune (Pat Hughes). Bob Bielefeld CAST Marcia Verhaeghe Cody Montalban John Bragg Jim Crum Pam Marron Susan Lesniak Marcia McCormick Kathie Hall Dave McNeely Shelly Dowell Dennis Powers Debbie Linder Pat Hughes Bob Winchell Mary Louise Hoene Margaret Garcia Irene Dutton Tom Me Masters Kathy Gardiner Linda Harris Director: Sister Louise de Paul Pithetaerus, the footloose (Bob Bielefeld), seems to be taking his name a little too seriously. Or maybe Iris (Marcia McCormick) is too swift for him. Merely applied trig. . . . Quite elemen- tary, explains The Real Estate Woman, played by Marcia Verhaeghe. After a mock game between the Miles City Cowboys and the Central Rams presented by the senior class at a pep assembly, the defeated Cowboys don't seem too sad. It was a proud moment for Charles Gullard as he was inducted into the National Honor Society. Assisting are Margaret Garcia and Chris Brooks, Honor Society Officers. Planning full coverage of the magazine drive, Roger Beeter pointed out his area to John Tiskus. There is a time for some things, and a time for all things; A time for great tilings, and a time for small things. Miguel Cervantes 14 In a world of books, Mary Connolly explores its wonderful opportunities. The girls' gym class takes advantage of the beautiful autumn weather. Cathy Shields was caught by the camera as she prepared to join the soccer game. Obviously having a good time, Wally Winchell treats Linda Jacobson to a whirl on the dance floor at the Letterman's Dance. The newest service club and the one exclusively for girls is the Z CLUB. Here, of- ficers Mary Ann Larguier, Sharon Solomon, Margie Lutgen, and Rita Healow are re- pairing the school traveling jackets. Other activities included sponsoring Welcome Freshman Day, working on the Muscular Dystrophy and UNICEF drives, maintaining the trophy case and bulletin boards, and selling candy at the games. SERVICE typifies the activities of the KEY CLUB. Cleaning the parking lot, selling candy at the games, putting up Christmas decorations, and sel- ling tickets at school sporting events con- stitute some of their many services. The JAYBEES, the foster child” of the Junior Chamber of Commerce has given service to the school and community. They have painted the faculty lunchroom and locker room, built a bookcase, put up signs in the faculty parking lot, sold candy at the games, dec- orated a Christmas tree at the airport. Officers and members Bob Cline, Kurt John, Dan Hickey, Ken Gustin, Mike Reynolds, and Curtis Ward talk over future plans with Father Hruska. Through the SCIENCE CLUB, students find for themselves the possibil- ities of science in action. Here, officers Joe Bateson, Bob Driscoll, Angie Lucien, and Diane Duffner examine a club invention. Busy acting like actors engrosses the THESPIANS. Dave McNeely, Diane Holzer, Tom McMasters, Jim Crum, and Marcia McCor- mick study their lines. Career Interests 18 Students planning a career in teaching gather in the FUTURE TEACHERS CLUB to discuss training, meth- ods, and application. Bonnie Long, Sue Herming- haus, and Pauline Burgoyne go over plans for one of their projects. MEDICAL CAREERS CLUB offers students the opportu- nity to investigate the nu- merous fields of medicine. Officers are Jane Maronick, Margie Maronick, and Margaret Garcia. The AUDIO-VISUAL CLUB provides a smooth-running and competent service for classes needing televisions, movie projectors, and record players. John Aldrich and Ron Ayers check equipment v« Knowledge will bring the Light, say the members of the CONFRATERNITY OF CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE. The members teach religion classes at several par- ishes. Going over lesson plans are Peggy Theiland, Beatrice Olzack, Lois Car- roll, Margie Maronick, Bonnie Long, and Jane Maronick. The BOYS OBLATES have contributed their services this year by taking a census of Little Flower Parish. Officers and members are Phil Karls, Pat Roe, Vern Roberts, and Tim Stokoe. The world, which is daily becoming smaller through the efforts of civil, scientific, and religious leaders, is presented by the SODALITY OF OUR LADY through various speakers. Speaking to Miss Mary Dell Stecher, a member of VISTA the domestic counter- part of the Peace Corps, is Chris Brooks, Prefect. 20 The officers of CENTRALITES, Beverly Karls, Patty Dembach, Marsha Doss, Michele Acker, and Frances Ulrickson plan a trip to the county hospital. This was one of the many activities by which they helped others in order to further their own spiritual development. Forming a core of the Catholic youth movement at Central, the YOUNG CHRISTIAN STUDENTS meet weekly to observe, judge, and act on social injustices. Representing various groups are John Tiskus, Doug Mitchell, Janelle Frost, Dave Roberts, and Fred VanValkenburg. 21 Glennon rounds Hardin's end. Pat Schruth tries for the extra point. Ram co-captains, Mike Glennon and John Winchell, flip the coin with the captains of the Anaconda Copperheads to begin the hard-hitting game. Rick Bean (33), Fred Van Valkenburg (21), Mike Glennon (12) and Jerry Pospisil go in for the kill against Hardin. 23 TOP ROW:Mike Kenney, Vem Roberts, Doug Rausch, Pat Minard, Greg Smith, Tom Sheehy, Phil Sullivan, Phil Zeek, Bob Marler, John Graham, Ed Szudera, Larry Guilbault, Dean Knudsen. They are Fred VanValkenburg, president; Linda Larkin, treasurer; Mike Bruski, vice-president; and Linda Garding, secretary. MARK WALSHE SHIRLEY ZUMBRUN Father Bourke keeps his class amused in the study of Reli- gion I. Surrounded in an atmosphere of religious art, Father Dimke's junior religion class concentrate while Gordon Mischel recites. I Michele Acker and David Stenerson keep Kathy Whit- tle guessing; the three are students in Mrs. Hudson's English III. Spanish is no laughing matter claims the class, but Linda Proper and Mary Jo Altmaier are planning a Spanish holiday at the Hotel Hilton in Mexico City. 38 French students supplement text books with records to acquire a natural accent. Kathy Gardner, Vern Roberts, Tom Ford, Bev Winch ell, Ken Ferro, Sheila Jordan and Paula Monaco make use of the French recordings. Latin is more than conjugations says Sister Mary Laurita. This is proved by Katy Roscoe, Carol Dicky, Mike Boyott and Tom Saubert who are recording a play. 39 Leila Hauptman, Cathie Allen, Larry Arnold, Gail Perryman, Mary Kay Dunfy, Roby Sticka concentrate on Dick Monaco during a discussion in World History. The world Pat Frost and Carol Batt follow through with American History by locating the United States on the globe but Bob Moore and Dan Monahan seem to be lost. Tom McMasters seem to be more interested in Marcia McCormick than in the world map behind him. Bob Winchell, Bob Marler, Fred VanValkenburg and John Winchell find that experiments play an integral part in the understanding of Physics. Geometry students learn by watching Stan Rubel, a fel- low student, work a problem at the blackboard. 42 How's this, Mr. Roberts? John Whit- tle and Jim Depner learn the founda- tions of mathematics in Algebra I. Drafting is a useful and practical skill. Here Mr. Zellner, Drafting instructor, offers comments and suggestions to Kurt John about his work. Mike Glennon, Bill Breen and John Gannon review court proce- dures learned in Business Law. Pat Singer, Sharon Logan, and Diane Desmul demonstrate the use of a mimeograph machine in Secretarial Practice, a new course at Central this year. Accuracy as well as speed are essential for doing jobs in Typing I, which is taught by Mr. Roe. 45 REV. NATHANIEL BOURKE Religion I REV. JOHN DIMKE Religion II,III, Sponsor: Junior Class, Ski Club Education plays a very important part in the lives of Central's faculty. Half hold Master's degrees and many of the rest are working toward them. Sisters Mary Lenore, Joseph Angela, Agnes Clare, Louise dePaul, Michael Delores, Rose Delores, Mary Eugene, Mary Laurita, Marie Paula, Anne Simeon, Mr. Christiansen, Teague, and Father Hruska attended school last summer and five faculty members are taking courses at Eastern Montana College during the year. In addition, Sisters Edward and Leo Therese taught school last summer. A few saw the world: Sister Mary Lenore traveled through eastern and southern United States for credit in a geography course, and Mrs. Hudson toured Europe. Many of the faculty put in long hours, some coming at eight o'clock and others not leaving until seven in the evening. Private tutoring, sponsoring clubs, correcting papers also claim much of their time. Faculty get-togethers in- cluded an Evening of Recollection, picnics, and a Christmas dinner. Among the faculty who engage in com- munity activities are Sister Mary Eugene and Mrs. Stecher, who are members of the Regional Mathematics Club, with Sister acting as secretary, Mrs. Fitzgerald is past president of the Montana Press-Women's Association and Mrs. Hudson is a member of that organization. His efficiency and skill is demonstrated by the fact that Holy Rosary won the city basketball tournament. Father Dimke is an active speaker for the ecumenical movement; Father Hruska sponsors the Newman Club, and Father Bourke moderates a CFM unit. Teachers help bridge the gap between childhood and adulthood and provide principles for a fulfilling, Christian life. They really are an important part in the time of our lives. Nearly 11,000 meals were served to the thousands of people who came to try their luck at the 27 booths. Prizes included a new car, a boat, color television sets, a stereo, cameras and a mink stole. Senior Veronica Longo reigned over the Carni- val as queen. Vonnie, as her classmates call her, belongs to Pep Club and is very active in Art Club. She has been on the honor roll and plans to major in art in college. The other candidates were Cathy MacIntyre, junior, Edna Walsh, sophomore; and Michele Walsh, fresh- man. Greg Leskela seems confident that Richard Sch- ulte will win a prize for his renowned fame in dart throwing. photo - ZIMMERMAN'S STUDIO The Senior Class imported their own hula dancer (actually, In an attempt to make the three Days of Rec- ollection more meaningful this year, both the name and the format have been changed. They are now called Eighth Days, a Jewish symbolic number meaning a special day set aside from the ordinary week-day. Each day has included Mass, some time for pri- vate or group prayer. One Eighth Day fea- tured group conferences with faculty mem- bers on topics of the student's choice. On another, the movie THE OX-BOW INCIDENT was shown, followed by discussions of per- sonal responsibility, law, justice, and power. Phil Sullivan serves Father Hruska as he distrib- utes Holy Communion to the students. Eighth Dave Roberts, Mike Reynolds and Pat Hughes join in the active student participation in the Mass. Miles Egan ponders during a discussion on THE OX-BOW INCIDENT. - • t JtkU Wearing new sweatshirts and holding new equip- ment, G. A. A. girls form a V for Victory. Student Panels, led by a member of Student Council, went to each class and discussed student problems. Action taken following the recommendation of previous panels includes a new paint job for the Multi-purpose Room, changes in the Wednes- day Mass, and changes in girls' dress regula- tions. 86 Every two weeks the students are issued the latest edition of the RAMPAGE, the school newspaper. The Rampage strives to put out a paper which is the voice of the school. Here, John Tiskus, editor-in-chief, and Julie Smith, news editor, work to meet a deadline. The Lettermen's Club is an honor- ary club for boys who have earned a letter in a sport. Sponsoring the Lettermen's Dance, the Home- coming Bonfire and buying cor- sages for the cheerleaders are some of the activities of this club. The officers are FROM TOP TO BOTTOM: Mike McCann, pres. ; Pat Schruth, Tom Buller, and Jerry Rospisil. 87 Keeping the school spic and span summer and winter is Mr. Schaff's specialty at Central. Mr. Jim Mack is on the job at Central every night. Besides keeping the halls and class- rooms clean. Mr. Mack is al- ways a sympathetic and under- standing listener. Mrs. Andrew Schaff, school secretary, may seem swamped with enrollment slips, but don't let her work-piled desk discourage you; she is always willing to lend a helping hand. It's a rare sight to catch Central's cooks standing idle; they're too busy preparing delicious meals. The cooks are Mrs. Ida May, Mrs. Frances Harmon and Mrs. Ottelia Witham.
