1 CeiUnai Cathtic High Sckrni Bi£Eaujd, Wt©idem RwitWiefc The Yearbook Staff began this year with the idea of increasing your enjoyment of the book. Several innovations have been introduced—a touch of color, some added pages, and a summer sup- plement. The characters on the following pages will be the people you have known, and you will see activi- ties that cannot merely be described. The faculty adviser, the student editors, and staff have all had their parts in the production of this book. They proudly present it to you now — the 962 Rambler. When we left their grade schools, we left only the school behind, for their fatherly concern followed us. They are keenly interested in our activities, assist us financially, and above all, aid us spiritually. They open the school year with a Mass of the Holy Ghost in each parish and continue their interest until baccalaureate. These are our pastors, our leaders, our fathers. Most Reverend William J. Condon, D.D., Bishop of Great Falls The Catholic education of the youth of our Diocese has been the constant con- cern of our Most Reverend Bishop. Under his guidance and with his approval, one college, three large high schools, and fifteen grade schools have been erected in recent years. Today, under his jurisdiction, one college, seven high schools, and twenty-three grade schools are conducted for the youth of the Diocese of Great Falls. 10 DeMier Studio—Great Falls Most Reverend Eldon B. Schuster, D.D., Auxiliary to Bishop Condon Diocesan Superintendent of Schools Consecrated on December 21, 1961 Comment allez vous? asks Mademoiselle Link. M. Felt replies a pert, Je vais bien. Miss Marilyn Schmidt smiles a look of approval. But Sister Peter, says Biologist R. Dutton, all see are wiggling little black dots. That's yeast? Dave McMasters remains uncomprehending, while Don Schmidt seems enlightened by Mr. William Hurr's not so simple explanation of a physics problem. 73 Presiding over the vast and exciting world of books is Sister Edward, librarian, who is always happy to help the students find books. The journalism class keeps active through the year with the dual purpose of putting out a quarterly publication, RAMARKS, and the RAM- BLER which they hope will capture all the memories of Central for long after graduation. Not only do the students gain knowledge of techniques in accurate, clear writing, but they also are given the opportunity to express creative thoughts and ideas. Sister Regina, journalism ad- visor, is surrounded by her in- dustrious staff on a typical day before deadline. Seated from leff to right are: C. Gerharz, F. Williams, T. Payne, L. Ried- linger, and J. Novasio. Stand- ing from left to right are: B. Wegner, Sister Regina, S. Hill, M. Rector, H. Lutgen, L. Schwalger, K. Shilling, G. Quil- ico, K. DeMeyer, and Ed Luther. Back row from left are: P. Suppes, S. Chesarek, J. Petek, and C. Lynch. Time out from the Christmas Trilogy rehearsal . . . Result? Smiling faces on the advanced chorus members. LAST ROW: Tom O'Donnell, Bill Holier, Pat Kelleher, Don Schmidt, and Jim Birgenheier. One of the most active groups at Central this yeOr was the band. Under the direction of Sister Mary Evelyn, the band made great strides reaching new heights. In geometry. Sister Mary Baptist draws attention to a parallelogram, while one of her protegees is distracted by some unknown culprit. Mrs. Thelma FitzGerald smiles as she leads her English II group through The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Considered a favorite of the Religion III class. Father Nathaniel Bourke flashes his famous grin. Sister Mary Florena seems about to ask for a ver- dict on the diagram from one of her English I students. 16 But I'm the Dux Hostium! protests Mike Birrer os he is forced to take the sword. Father John Dimke uses such means to enliven his Latin II class. Wonder what Mr. Robert Ehli and some of his Boys' Biology students are inspecting with such interest? One of Sister Mary Aloysius' English I students appears to be a little perplexed over a hard lesson. On current events day, Mr. Neal Christensen takes full advantage of the World Week magazine. Checking those right answers with his rambunc- tious Algebra I class, Mr. Eugene Cislo assumes a relaxed position, as if in need of a rest. In Miss Anne Diekhans' Spanish I class, Rick Sol- tero and Jay Olson seem to be dreaming of romantic Spain. Never fear when Mr. Victor Roberts is near ' and can render assistance to a distressed Algebra I student. Practice makes perfect ' could be Sister Ann Jeannette's motto in preparing her Shorthand II students for the O.G.A. contest. Sister Marie William looks pleasantly amazed at the eager response obtained from her Latin I class. All right, down again. Mr. Adolph Zellner joins in with his P.E. class, showing them just how it's done. 20 Father Albert Rutan gives his all-boy Religion II class the opportunity to recheck homework papers. Next stop Timbuktu! With a twist of the finger, Mr. John McMahon's world history students can journey to far off and exotic lands around the world. In Latin IV, Father Eugene Hruska, with his ad- vanced class, compares translations and conjuga- tions of verbs. No, Mrs. May Miesen, is not being attacked by these barefooted misses. She is instructing them in the rudiments of bowling during girls' P.E. class. 27 'Pledge ym loyally once again Senum CLASS OFFICERS GEORGIA QUILICO Secretary RICHARD BILLSTEIN President PATRICK KELLEHER Vice-President MARY LEE MAJERUS Treasurer JERRY ACHTEN DOLORES AIGUIER BARBARA ALLARD MARK ASTLE DIANNE AXLUND ANNE BAXTER JOE BOLAND MICHAEL BOYLE MIKE BROOKS PETER BROWN BARBARA CANTRELL MICKEY CARPENTER KATHLEEN DEMEYER r v CHERYL CHRISTIE BILL CORNELL CAROL CRAIGHILL BILL DESMUL DAVE DESMUL PATRICIA DOLAN BOB DUARTE BUD DUNHAM CAROL ELIS NORMAN ELLINGSEN PAT ERAERTS CAROL FAKE FRAN D. It was one of a series of ten marriage talks given to seniors during January and February. Mr. Zellner and advanced drafting class learn the knack of professional sign-making with their new silkscreen. All the signs used in the carnival were their products. Expressions tell the story of this game. These senior girls faithfully supported the team through the ups and downs of the season.  ; d«« . v ’ Ta Owi ywitk. This year marked the beginning of a new Class A conference, which included Bozeman and Liv- ingston as new opponents. The Rams ended the season with a 3-2 conference record and a 4-5 overall record. In a season marked by cold, snow, and mud. Rams, their student supporters, and Central Round Table members never lost their enthusiasm and spirit of co-operation. Another first in Central football was the or- ganization of an all-freshmen team coached by Mr. Tom Roe. Playing varsity teams from smaller schools, the freshmen ended up with a 2-5 record. We hope to see you all out there tonight giving us your full support. Coach Adolph Ox Zellner encourages the students at pep meeting. 80 From a mild beginning, August 24 . . . i. D. In what was primarily a building year, the team showed up much better than the record indicates. Nearly all games were decided by close scores, with the scrappy Rams playing good ball all season. The Rams started the season with the Central Invitational Tournament, Novem- ber 24-25. Accepting bids and competing were AA and A teams: Butte Central, Miles City, and Helena. Miles City car- ried off the honors. High point man for the season was Ron Kloster, with a total of 283 points. Ron was the sole Ram to receive All-State mention. Dance with me, Henry! Paul Staid and an opposing player show ballroom form as they vie for the ball. Billstein, after faking out a Helena player, fires to Birrer going for a layup. With hands reaching out and upward, Birrer makes a beautiful one hander in Helena game. Eight eager arms stretch up for the tip-in in the Miles City game. Birrer sets to receive Billstein's rebound in the Helena game. Too hot to touch! So Kloster and Walsh watch and wait with two opponents. Ron Mathern starts the season off right by pinning his opponent during the season-opener at Hardin. The 1961-62 wrestling team started their first year in conference competition with Laurel, Hardin, Liv- ingston, Sheridan and Miles City as opponents. The season ended with a score of 2 wins and 6 losses for the inexperienced mat men. Coach Ox Zellner sent a total of twelve men to the State Divisional Meet at Senior high school. Of these twelve, Ron Mathern and Val Szudera re- ceived enough points to send them to the Class A State Championship in Great Falls, February 23-24. Both these men were defeated by more seasoned wrestlers. 7967-62 WRESTLING TEAM—BOTTOM ROW: G. Axlund, T. Baxter, B. Guckeen, B. Korn, M. Brooks, V. Szudera, R. Mathern, D. Weidinger, J. Baker, S. This year the senior dramatics class presented the heart- warming story which centers around the joys and sorrow of the March fam- ily, especially Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy. This closely knit family struggles through the days of hardship and pov- erty caused by the Civil War, conquer- ing difficulties by keeping true to themselves and to their friends. Because of its humor and tragedy, tears and laughter, Little Women will always have a place in the affections of young and old. 92 Dressed in rustling skirts and long- tailed coats, these seniors presented one of the two night performances of Little Women. SEATED in the first row are Kristi Schilling, Diana Roth, and Mary Lee Majerus; second row: Karen Soltero, Janet Minshall, Mary Ann MacIntyre, Sharon Kreiner, Judy Massman and Camilla Gardner. STANDING are Pat Kelleher, Bob Beeter, Dean Graham, David Desmul and Susan Stroebe. Mother and her little women gather around the organ for one of their favorites, 'The Battle Hymn of the Republic. The second night was as much a success with this cast adding their talents to the production. SEATED in the first row are Ellen Larsen, Lor- rie Riedlinger, Carrie Craighill, and Jean Aldrich; second row: Nancy Quinliven, Kathy Hanchett, Mary Kay Webb, Judy Layng, Jeanie Krueger, and Pat Dolan. STANDING are David Desmul, Bob Beeter, Pat Kelleher, and Bill Desmul. 93 In a voice ranging from a startling whisper to a loud shout. Father Fabian Fehring, O.F.M. Cap. instructed all four classes in the spiritual life. Father Fabian is supe- rior of St. Labre Indian Mission, Ashland, Montana, and has worked with young people since ordination. Refoeai Imagine four consecutive days of silence! The halls of the school were steeped in an atmosphere of prayer and thought on No- vember 7-10. What is a true retreat? Re- treat may figuratively be described as a period of conversation with God and a reflection of your life, past, present, and future. Retreat is very important because it draws a person closer to God while giving him happiness and peace within himself. Ele- ments that make a good retreat are recep- tion of Holy Communion, prayer, and the conferences which emphasize the import- ance of religion in our daily lives. Mtewuj Cktwtuuts The Christmas Spirit wafted into Central early and grew as the holy day approached. Centralites celebrated with a Christmas program honoring the Christchild's birth- day. The music and dramatic departments sponsored the program and the Student Board successfully transformed the cafeteria into a red and gold ballroom for the 1962 Christmas formal. Happy New Year to all!! Behind any successful event lies a mountain of preparation. Cen- tral students, Don Schmidt, Michele Pitet, Peggy Toy, and Bud Dun- ham are among the numerous ones who used hammer, scotch tape, and ingenuity to transform a barren gym into a gay midway. There was fun and enjoyment for everyone from six months to sixty years at the gigantic five-parish carnival held at Central, February 25-27. It appears as if this Maverick is looking over any likely gambling prospects for Mr. Floyd Larsen, (center), who is tending the Man's Fancy booth. CflWUia£ Setting a precedent at Central this year was the firsr annual all-parish carnival. Over $25,000 profit was real- ized, which could be attributed to the well-organized preparations by the some 2,700 persons, plus 600 students, who volunteered their services. One of the main attractions was the dinners, where in Central's cafeteria 6,000 meals were served in the three days of the carnival. During the first two nights of the carnival, delicious dinners were served. The final night featured a smorgasbord, where hungry carnival- goers could indulge in tantalizing dishes. Whether it be bingo, booths, raffle tickets, or cotton candy, all contributed to the gay atmosphere of a carnival. Climaxing the carnival was the selection of carnival queen, sopho- more candidate Judy Webb. Since Judy was in St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minnesota, she was represented by fellow-classmate Rona Dutton, who was applauded by the other queen candidates: Junior Margie Kampershroer, Senior Cheryl Christie, Freshman Christine Glennon, and Mr. Thomas Dolan, carnival chairman. Capm Winding up the evening's excite- ment was the drawing of $2,800 in prizes. The main prize raffled was $1,000. Powers behind the scenes were the executive com- mittee: Rev. P. J. Donovan, Rev. Emmitt Neville O.M.I., Mr. Tom Dolan, and Mr. Tom O'Connor. Tve seen desperation shots, but this is ridiculous Cwbiat Activities Ciwwci£ Here the camera catches Father John Dimke in a discussion with several C.A.C. members after a meeting. Headed by Mrs. Anthony Gerharz, Jr., volunteers from the C.A.C. keep the snack bar open three times a week for the coke lovers of Central high. Among the faithful workers are: from left to right: Mrs. Paul Vassar, Mrs. John Rossetto, Mrs. Anthony Gerharz, Jr., and Mrs. Ralph Nelles. This year the C.A.C. swung out with a new idea—the Mom V Pop Hop. The dance was hailed as a success by both the parents and the students. The C.A.C. Steering Committee transacts business bteween meetings, plans the meetings and issues the C. A. C. NEWSLETTER. Members of the commit- tee, left to right, are: Mrs. Elmer Klos- ter, acting treasurer and representative of Holy Rosary parish; Mrs. Tony Math- ern, co-representative of Little Flower; Mrs. Louis Hall, editor of the NEWS- LETTER; Mrs. Anthony Gerharz, Jr., act- ing secretary; and Mr. Tom Dolan, pres- ident of the C.A.C. Not pictured are Mr. Phil Schwehr, St. Pius representative; Mr. Andy Sutton, representative of St. Patrick's; Mr. John Schiltz, vice-presi- dent; Mrs. Felix Webb, secretary-treas- urer; Mrs. Tony Ferro co-representative of Little Flower. My turn. Cuddles, says Tony Seitz, as he claims his privilege of dancing with the Homecoming Queen, Jean McCall. All enjoyed themselves at the annual Welcome Freshman Dance. 7 Q1 1 - 2 - 3 - Twist!
