Where The Wild Things Are Once upon a time Maurice Sendak created a book called WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE that most of us read as kids. It chronicles the adventures of Max, a feisty little boy, who, restless to meet the world on his own terms, creates (in his bedroom or in a dream) a world “where the wild things are” and establishes himself as the “king of the wild things.” The best fairy tales have always been about empowerment, about kids shaping the world into something they could man- age. By conniving clever wolves, shoving wicked witches into ovens, toppling giants, and creating kingdoms, fairy tale kids learn they can succeed through ingenuity, wit, intelligence, and friendship. Young readers sense they can succeed with similar virtues. Like Max, we too have been on a voyage “‘in and out of days.” Like Max, restless to meet the world on our own terms, we have made BMHS into our kingdom. This is where the wild things are and we are all kings here. Our beasts have been algebra problems, term papers, cafe food, Chelmsford and Andover rivalries, Monday mornings, K-Mart jobs, band practice, and every new experience we’ve met. We’re not fairy tale kids and it is another kind of jungle out there. But the class of 1988 has succeeded here with those same virtues we read about: ingenuity, wit, intelligence, and friendship. “LET THE WILD RUMPUS START.” Soccer captains Mike Goodwin, Mark Quat- trocchi, and Ray Derosa at the fall sports rally Spirited players celebrate a good call by the referee Far left: Jen Pierce gets her usual Left: Brant Aylward relaxes
