National Honor Society During the school year '77-'78, the National Honor Society once again provided and interesting and some- times exciting experience for its sixty members. All members were re- cjuired to participate in at least two fund-raising and two service pro- jects, but almost all were involved in most of the NHS's numerous activi- ties. At the beginning of the NHS cal- endar was its most formal occasion, the initiation. Parents, relatives, and teachers were invited to witness this event, which was held in the New Addition cafeteria on November 20, IQ77, Along with Ms. Madsen and Ms. Cardarelli, the NHS advisors, Mr. Flaherty, the superintendent of schools, Mr. Archambault, the High School principal, and Mr. lohansen, the senior housemaster delivered in- troductory speeches highlighting the occasion. Short speeches, elaborat- ing on the four rjualities of the NHS member, were also delivered by the four officers, Frank Tino, lanet Ayl- ward, Nancy Scjuitieri, and Karen Hoyt, the President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer respectively. Highlighting the evening was the candle-lighting ceremony, during which each member lit a candle symbolizing the lighting of the flame of learning. After the cere- mony, everyone was invited to pas- teries and refreshment. The National Honor Society did not wait long to begin helping their school and society. On November 2, they were guides at Career Day, helping to direct over 3,000 students and teachers to their proper rooms. They also performed the role of guide at the three Parent-Teacher Nights, as they assisted parents, un- familiar with the school, in finding the proper rooms. Perhaps their most admirable service to both school and community, however, was the blood drive. They enlisted donors, organized the procedure, and assisted the nurses, as they managed to raise over one hundred fifty pints of blood for the Red Cross, ln this manner, the NHS has benefitted not only the school but also their fellow man. The highlight of the year for the National Honor Society is the three- four day trip in April. The clestina- tion of this year's trip has not yet been determined, but among those suggested are the White Mountains, Montreal, lug lnn la resort in the Berkshiresj, and Washington, DC. The major factor in determing, the location of the trip is the amount of NATIONAL HONOR socierv 3 4 'E ' 5 W 'kj QS l funds available. Along these lines, the NHS has used various means of raising funds. Candy has been sold in December and is slated to be sold again in March. Personalized sta- tionary was also sold in December and was a great success for both the NHS and the customers. On Febu- rary I8, a bake sale was held at the Billerica Mall. All baked goods sold were made by the members, making this activity very profitable. With the combined earnings of these fund- raising activites, the NHS has helped to make this year's trip a pleasure for all involved. The National Honor Society is more than just a trip at the end of the year. It is a learning and helping experience for all its members, pro- moting teamwork and community service. I feel certain I speak for all its members when I say we are hap- py to belong to the 1977-'I978 Na- tional Honor Society of Billerica High School. 6
