Cjevffcallfon Because you have been a friend to everyone of us at all times, we dedicate our yearbook to you, Mrs. Messer. We appreciate your untiring efforts to make our school years pleasant in both work and play. We will always remember your patience and helpful- ness, your cheerfulness and understanding, and we hope that, as the years go by, we shall be able to justify your faith in us. Accept, then, our thanks for everything that you have done for us. Clarr 0111957 if 5. Dear Mr. Adams: Four years ago we were enrolled as freshmen and you became the principal of Howe High Schoolg thus we are the first class to graduate after having spent our whole four years of high school life under your leadership. Looking back now, we can honestly say they have been profitable and enjoyable years of working together under all kinds of circumstances. Someone has said, To have a friend you must be a friend. You certainly have lived up to that recommendation, for through your understanding of us, your refusal to show partiality, your sound judgment, and helpful advice you have proved yourself to be to us a friend indeed, and in return you have won from among us many staunch and loyal friends. We know how hard you have worked to give us the best possible school with high standards both in scholarship and in discipline. We know, too, that the way has not always been easy. More than you realize, and more than we realize now perhaps, your example of hard work and unflinching adherence to high ideals has molded our characters and influenced our thinking. We truly appreciate the association we have had with you, and it is our sincere desire that wherever we go, we shall be a credit, not only to our school, but to you as well. As we work on THE TOTEM, making it ready to go to print, and while we eagerly prepare for our senior prom, we realize how near graduation really is. This realization causes us to indulge in a good deal of reminiscing. Do you remember our first day at high school? We, as freshmen, felt very important, yet .we eyed the seniors with awe and respect. That was Mr. Adams' first year at the high school too, and he, like us, was trying to acclimate himself to the high school routine. The morning session was new to us because, in junior high, we had become accus- tomed to attending school in the afternoon part of the double session. Now we were there from eight o'clock until twelve-forty. It was hard to have to get up so much earlier in the morning, but it was wonderful to have the afternoons free for work, play or sports. When it came time to elect class officers we thought very carefully before choosing. George Nickerson, Charles Panas, jean Porter, and Janis Ericson were our final choice. Our class was so large that it was impossible to make all our decisions in class meeting. So we elected homeroom repre- sentatives to speak for us at executive sessions. Right after the midjear we started to plan our hrst high school dance, Platter Parade. It was held on March 26, 1954, with Bob Perry and Ugo San Antonio as disc jockeys. Remember the fun of decorating? Hanging over the balcony to fasten streamers, carrying ladders, making paper records for favors? The dance proved to be a big success thanks, to a great extent, to Miss Day, our hard- working class advisor. Wfhen we returned to Howe High in 1954 as sophomores, with Miss Day still our advisor, we proceeded to elect new class oflicers and homeroom representatives. When the votes were tallied, we found that George Nickerson, Vernon Martin, Bar- bara Redden, and Miriam Buono had been elected. Because our record hop was to be held on December 11, we started planning for it right away. Choosing jingle Bell Ball as the name, we decorated the Maurice A. Buck Auditorium with red, white, and green streamers and a huge Christmas tree in full array of delicately shaped baubles, bright lights, and glittering tinsel. Miss Day was once again sponsor of a profitable and fun-packed event. During our sophomore and most of our junior years we were relieved of dentention tickets. They iafoz were replaced by demerit tickets. fYou just can't get entirely away from ticketsj However, most of us found the new demerit system just and felt that, in time, it would do a lot to improve the school. There was a challenge in trying to keep our records free of demerits. That year was Billerica's three hundredth anni- versary, and a week was set aside for a gala cele- bration. Parades, plays, banquets, visits to historical homes, and square dances highlighted the Ter- centenary celebration. Of course we all took part in the various events, and we fully enjoyed the day off from school which the celebration brought us. In May of our sophomore year we learned, much to our distress, that it was to be Miss Day's last year as our class advisor. She was going to North Andover to teach, and although we were happy for her because she was improving her fortune, we were also sad at losing her as we gave her a small fare- well party. The month of September in 1955 arrived, and we expected to begin our junior year in our new high school. But the building was not ready, and we were granted a three weeks' reprieve. Eventu- ally, however, the workmen withdrew, and we con- vened. There was a big difference between life at the old Howe High and that at the new Billerica Memorial. We had a public address system, which seemed a marvel at first, but now, an old story, seems some- what of a nuisance. There were three lunch periods with music and dancing to help us enjoy our lunches. There were new teachers, and most drastic change of all, no more double sessions. We now devoted full time to getting educated. For several weeks, while traveling from class to class we saw workmen installing last minute fixtures, planting shrubs, or painting numbers on doors. The second floor was set aside for the very im- portant junior homerooms, and as juniors we were allotted two class advisors, Mrs. Messer and Mr. Sangermano. At the very first meeting the newly elected ofhcers, Arthur Roach, Frank Rosander, Bar- bara Redden, and Miriam Buono, began to get acquainted with our new advisors, and as time went by we all realized how lucky we were to have both of them to guide us so patiently and cheerfully through our last two years of high school life. In November we began what turned out to be quite an undertaking, the selection of a design for our class rings. Finally, after weeks of hesitation and uncertainty, the class chose a design offered by the Loren Murchison Company. We were very proud of our class rings as they were the first of Billerica Memorial High. In the winter and early spring of 1956 we aided the seniors with the Bleacher Fund Drive. Toward the end of the year detention hall was re-established by vote of the school committee. So once again we saw the old, familiar sight of pupils taking the long trek home after detention. Toward the end of March we began to plan for our junior prom. We decided on a rainbow theme, decorated the new cafeteria in rainbow colors, and called it Rainbow Wonderland. May 18th drew near, and we busily and excitedly prepared last min- ute details, ordering corsages, taping silhouettes to the walls, making reservations at Robin Hood's Ten Acres for after prom parties. When the long- awaited night arrived, it passed all too quickly. Such hectic preparations! -And so soon over! But we shall have it to remember. Carol Grattan was chosen queen of our wonderland with Verner Mello, Donna Blunt, Virginia Rounds, Carole Waitkus, Elizabeth Fowler, and Miriam Buono as her attendants. As we slipped into bed in the wee hours after the prom, we somewhat sleepily realized that our junior year was almost over and that we should soon be seniors. Surely we all grew up a little bit that night. September 1956. The early part of our senior year brought several changes. We descended to the ground fioor for homerooms. The lunch periods were shortened, and we had but two of them. We started classes at the same time in the morning, but we were dismissed a half'hour earlier. A new course in driver education was offered to the juniors and seniors, and many of us signed up for it at once. As seniors we grew in stature and importance for thought we didj as we organized our class for our big year. We elected Arthur Roach, George Nickerson, Ellen McSweeney, and Miriam Buono for officers. During the football season we had a rally before the home games. The day before the Thanksgiving Day game with Chelmsford, we had a special rally. Two seniors, Sandra Rivers and jean Nickerson, helped to bolster enthusiasm by imitating a Chelms- ford cheerleader and football player. What a com- edy team they were! At the game the next day we yelled, whooped, and screeched until we were hoarse, and although we lost we felt that everyone had done his best and that we went down to honorable defeat. During the fall more changes were made in our school set-up. Mr. Archambault was promoted from vice principal to the position of assistant superin- tendent, an office newly created by the school com- mittee. Mr. Nuttall replaced him as vice principal, and Mrs. Durgin was elected to join Mr. Clancy in taking over the classes left teacherless by these two promotions. To us the biggest project of our senior year seemed the creation of a yearbook, but we could not find an advisor. Finally we prevailed upon Miss Belcher to undertake the task, and we started work, not knowing what obstacles lay ahead, After listening to several bids for photographer and printer, we finally chose the Loring Studios and the Delaney Press to do our work. Prodded by the untiring efforts of Miss Belcher we met our deadlines and overcame all obstacles. After Christmas vacation our new library was finally ready for use. It didn't take long for stu- dents to learn that here was an opportunity not to be overlooked, and the demand for library passes grew apace. We decided to hold our senior formal on February 15, and so we anxiously began our plans in late December. Castle in the Clouds was our picturesque theme. Soft shades of blue, silver, and white decked the cafeteria. And what a week! Tri Delta trip to the Ice Follies on Wednesday night. Final dead- linefor the yearbook the next day. And that same night the SENIOR PROM. But we loved it. It made us feel that we were shaking the very universe with our hectic, activity. When we think back over our senior year we shall always remember such things as chatter filled year- book sessions with Miss Belcher, Tri Delta meetings and parties with Mrs. Walsh, exchanging class pic- tures, collecting autographs in our yearbooks, driving lessons, oral topics by order of Mrs. McLaughlin, explosions in chemistry class, gym push-ups, and being measured for caps and gowns. As graduation day approaches we have many won- derful memories to relive. It will be a sad day because we are leaving our sheltered high school life, but it will be a happy day because we shall be facing a bright new future. May the valuable experi- ences and happy times of our high school days live forever in our hearts. ciUl11l1lL'I'Ci.ll Fnglislm Huw many umpics? f .n -gi 1 ,f: 5T ,.,f.:w-azwmwflgfl Whcrc s thc engine? The chief value of sports lies, not in winning, but in learning to work together and to keep trying to the very end, even though losing, and in the fun the girls have in playing the game. ln this coin our girls have been well paid. They have worked hard and have been faithful in attendance at games, even through the bitter cold at the end of the football season. Their annual hop, the first school dance of the year, was a great success both financially and socially. The several rallies which they directed during the fall before major football games were climaxed by the one on the eve of the Thanksgiving Day game with Chelmsford. More than usual hilarity was added to this rally by the burlesquing, by Sandra Rivers and jean Nickerson, of a cheerleader and her handsome football player escort. The uniform for our fair damsels is a forest green corduroy, cut in princess style, set off by a tiny, white mandarin collar and a large, green B over a white megaphone. They wear white gloves and white majorette boots. To the 1956-57 Cheering Squad and to their advisor, Mrs. Margaret Adams, we say, Thank You for your support in all of our athletic endeavors. You have faithfully backed all our teams and have shared with them the joys of winning as well as the disappointments of defeat. You have given your all to prompt these teams to victory and have earned our sincerest gratitude. , ...- ...W-da-, Our unexpected guests! Dirty knees, confetti, and great big smiles 1 41-8.
