At last the class of 1952 was starting its version of Memories There were three seconds left before the curtain rose. The chorus and leads were now in their places. The house lights dimmed, and the curtain rose on act one of Memories Act One was the freshman year at Howe High with the scene setting, the Maurice A. Buck Auditorium. Amid much festivity on the stage, the leads and chorus were dancing to the melodious strains of Louis Tuleja's orchestra as the Freshman Frolic unfolded. Scene two was a beach scene, Crane's Beach in lpswich. The chorus and leads, dressed effectively in beach attire, displayed a beach panorama. The curtain then brought to a successful conclusion the first year of a high school students life. Act Two was the sophomore year at Howe High. Scene one was again a dance scene, wherein the sophomores were working diligently to make their dance, a Halloween Dance, taking place on October 20, 1949, a suc- cess. The leads were played by the same students as in Act One. Scene two was a scene of great activity, Silver Lake, New Hampshire, the destination of their class trip. The curtain came down on the sophomore year at Howe High. ln Act Three the stand-ins, Thomas Condon, as president, Donald Went- worth, vice-president, Shirley Virgin, secretary, and Richard Myles, treas- urer, assumed their roles. The chorus again was the entire junior class. Scene one took place on May ll, l95l. The hall was decorated in the many elaborate scenes of a 'lMardi Gras. lt was the performance for the juniors - their junior Prom. Mary james was chosen queen of the Mardi Gras with her coterie of attendants, Betty O'Day, Barbara Barnard, Alice Newcomb, Sandra O'Connell, Shirley Virgin, and joanne Gibbons. For many days after, the juniors enjoyed discussing their successful performance. Scene two was at Whalom Park, june 24, l95l. Swimming, roller skat- ing, and other amusements were items on the stage set. Now the curtain rose on the last act of Memories The leads were played once again by the stand-ins, under the direction of Mrs. Doris Berg- ner and Mr. Arthur Merrifield. Scene one portrayed some of the memories enjoyed by the senior class. Class rings, pictures, dances, Tri-Delta, sports and cheerleading were all displayed here before the eyes of the audience. Scene two was November l6, l95l at Howe High School, the scene, the Senior Play, the Hangman's Noose, directed by Miss E. Ruth Belcher. The cast included Donald Simpson, lack Perry, Sandra O'Connell, Barbara Nicholson, loanne Gibbons, Clinton lngraham, james Calder, Ioan Donovan, Betty O'Day, and Mary james, who gave creditable performances. Scene three once more was again the Maurice A. Buck Auditorium. Dan Cupid, with his arrow pointing at dancing couples, was kept busy the night of February l5, l952, as the seniors enjoyed their annual Senior Prom. The queen of the Sweetheart Ball was Sandra O'Connell, and her attendants, Eleanor Sullivan, Virginia Corbett, Margurite Baraldi, Nancy Barton, lacque- line Blake, Shirley Virgin, Betty O'Day, Mary Barretto. The curtain rose on scene four of Memories amid much confusion at Howe High School. Girls in white gowns and boys in tuxes were rushing from one place to another, the night of graduation. The processional march played as the seniors marched into the auditorium. As they marched down the aisle, each had a special memory of his high school years. The time had arrived for the distribution of diplomas. Could it be possible that we, the class of l952, had completed twelve years of education? To the tune of the recessional march the seniors filed out of the hall. There were tears in the eyes of many of them as they bade farewell to classmates and teach- ers. Whether they venture to further education, armed forces or positions, Howe High will never be forgotten by the class of 1952. The curtain descends on Memories, and the seniors extended to everyone that helped to make their twelve years of school successful many, many thanks. In testimony whereof we hereunto set our hand, and in the presence of Witnesses do declare this document to be our last will this twentieth day of Iune in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and fifty-two. BRENDA SAVAGE SYLVIA SALISBURY SHIRLEY HOBAN CATHERINE BUSSEY On this twentieth day of Iune, 1952, A.D., members of the Class of SZ, Howe High School of Billerica, Massachusetts, did sign the above document in our presence, and did declare it their last will. Thereafter, we four, in their presence, and in the presence of each other, hereto affix our names. ROBERT BURKE, Chairman RICHARD DEMPSEY ROBERT DAVIS CLINT INGRAHAM l eCl,l'Yl of fke gllflllne The annual classic, the Thanksgiving Day football game at the Memorial Field, is well under way. After a scoreless first half for both Howe and Chelmsford, Howe has finally broken the ice and scored - three times, As a result of this nineteen to nothing lead Howe has over its opponent, Coach Chuck Lampson elects to remove one of his first string line-men and sends in Clint Ingraham. Clint springs from the bench, and in his rush to the field of play he trips over the water-bucket and strikes his head on the frozen ground. While in a state of unconsciousness, he dreams of what is waiting for him and his fellow classmates of 52 in the not so distant future. As we tour the inevitable future, via Clint's dream, we realize it has been ten years since we left dear Howe High School. The first thing that attracts our dreamer's attention is the new Howe High. Doorman Tucker Mahoney, resplendent in his green and silver braid, opens the wide glass door to the vestibule beyond which is the spacious outer office, where Mary Barretto, the principal's secretary, is busily typing. In the inner office Principal Iames Fournier and Vice-Principal Robert Davis are seated before the vast television screen, which is channeled to Room 205, where Miss Ann DeBenedictis and her French III class are practicing French Christmas carols. Clint learns that some of the graduates of H525 are faculty members here: Richar Barrington, biology teacher, Margur- 645' , ite Baraldi and Richard Myles, physi- Ai e cal education instructors, Helen Keri- 7 0 van, shorthand teacher, lane Ensor, W'--1 reading specialist, Charlotte Oskow- .,-1.--4' .lair ski, doctor of ancient languages, Gloria Crowley, head of the calculus de- partment, Ioanne Gibbons, Mrs. Dooley's apprentice in IV D. Upon leaving the school, Clint greets Harold Towle, janitor, waxing the highly polished marble stairs. janitor Towle directs our hero to the Robert l. Livingston Hospital, world famous for its physical therapy department, under the expert supervision of Dr. Ioan Donovan. Entering, he is greeted by Annette Lambert, the receptionist, who, in turn, shows him-Nancy Todd, who, at the switchboard, is trying desperately to locate Dr. Robert Livingston and his assistant, Dr. Thomas A. Condon, whose skill is needed in surgery. Betty Lou Brown, the energetic little fifty-twoer. is seen dashing to the nurses' quarters to post the night schedule: lacquelyn Allan, men's ward, Ann Devine, childrens ward, Barbara Armstrong, maternity ward, Ioan Martell, desk duty, Dorothy Schaier and Shirley Hoban, Psycho ward. From Annette, our capable receptionist, Clint learns a few pertinent facts about the more important patients here in the hospital. Mary Iormes, prima donna of the New York Metropolitan Opera, is here awaiting a laryngotomy. Muriel Ward is a patient in the maternity ward. She has Barbara Francis Nickerson and Sylvia Mitchell Smythe keeping her company. Leaving by the rear exit, Clint comes upon Bruce McQuaid, the dirty diaper collector, Kenneth Greathead, the caretaker, and Richard George, driver, with his bride, Barbara Barnard, the ambulance interne, accompanying him on all his calls. The ambulance chaser - a grim looking man - dashes out, exclaiming, Oh, joy, another customer! lt is, of course, the hospital morgue's custodian, jack Perry. Unfortunately, for lack, however, this patient, Thomas fTeethJ Tscherch, is not yet dead. He is just a little mangled from an automobile accident involving William Hot Rod Cooper and novelist Marjorie Pohl. Clint, inquisitive as to the cause of the accident, rushes to the scene of the catastrophe and finds on duty there several police officers, members of his graduating class. The squad consists of Chief Robert Burke, Patrolmen Ken Kelly, Vincent De Morris, and Arthur Pickering. Chief Burke suggests that Clint accompany them back to the station, where Sergeants Dorothy Keefe and Doris Hugo, of the Women's Division, were on duty. As they enter, Detectives john Harring and Paul Waitkus are leaving to follow up a tip on a narcotics ring. Learning that the Fire Department is next door, Clint excuses himself and continues his tour. At the Firehouse were Captain Nickerson, William Hamilton, and Raymond Gauthier. They had just returned from a fire at the Billerica Smoke Signal, Billerica's version of the New York Times. The staff of the Smoke Signal consists primarily of Howe graduates: Donald Wentworth, sports editor, Rosemarie Padula, financial editor, Vir- ginia Corbett, society editor, Barbara Nicholson, photographer, and Carolyn Melendy and Patricia Gasser, the efficient linotypists. The fire, which for- tunately was a minor one, was caused by the hot pictures taken by Bar- by Nicholson of the colossal robbery of the l953 Class Funds. Clint. after meeting the entire staff, goes to the airport with the society editor, Virginia Corbett, who is to meet the incoming flight on which Mrs. Charles Condon, the former Sandra O'Connell, was a passenger. At the air- port Clint sees the chief dispatcher, james Calder, talking over the next flight with one of his pilots, Sue Hunt, the first woman airline pilot in history. ln the outer office are Louise Hennessey and Carol 14 3. Fitzpatrick, airline hostesses, - T going over the list of pas- , sengers on the flight to the A G naval station at the Great X Lakes. Some of the more I familiar ones are Lieutenant Q E fx Lester Cameron, William X if ,Ht j Scott, chief of the frogmen - jf, . division, Sonny DeMaggio, Mc ' X1 Claude Roberts, and a non , 1-' f- t graduate member of the 6 .. 0 ' class, Tony Mazzeo. The inbound flight arrives, and on it are Mrs. Condon, her maid, Betty O'Day, and several other passengers. Clint immediately recognizes a burly soldier - Harry Morgan, recent recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor. Escorting Harry are several girls, Carol Rogers, Claire Wilson, Nancy Mallard, Lorraine Pauline, and Alice Newcomb, the Presidents personal representatives, who are homeward bound for a well deserved vacation. Wilted by her iourney, Claire Wilson asks Clint to escort her to the Band Beauty Salon, owned and operated by Nancy Barton and Iackie Blake. At the salon they meet Brenda Savage, who is having her hair done for her next fashion show, Phyllis Moore, Carolyn McElhiney, Mrs. Iames Calder - formerly Shirley Virgin of secretarial fame, and Ieanne Simpson, whom we know better as Ieanne Chandler. Two of the operators here are Lois Turnbull and Helen Moran, designers of the latest Oompa Oolala hairdo. Leaving the beauty shop with Mrs. Simp- Al son and her six children, Clint goes to the 4 i Grossman Lumber Yard, under the manage- 4' ment of her husband, Mr. Donald Simpson. gd ln his employment Don has Rosemary Q' Bouley, his secretary, Catherine Bussey, the N ', cashier, Edward Hoganson, Norman Silva, 5 5 and Robert Ialbert - the truck drivers. Talking with Donald is a very distin- guished gentleman, who is introduced to - f' Clint as the Mayor of Billerica, the honor- Q able William Mahoney. When told that Clint is touring his home town, Mayor Ma- Q honey invites him to visit his private busi- ness concern. Clint accepts this invitation and is chauffeured to an establishment called the Billerica Beer Bottling Co-opera- T tive. Among the many secretaries in the plush-lined office are Mary St. Hilaire, Vir- ? Y- W ginia Beaulieu, and Barbara Hoganson. In 'Q' 'l U the side office is Richard Dempsey, treas- A urer, talking to Virginia Walsh, the mayor's private secretary, who, it is said, has palpitations whenever his honor dic- tates to her. Clint then continues his tour of the plant and meets Paul Power and Iames Leahy, distillers, and Albert Reslow, the watchman. Afterwards, Clint goes up town to cash a traveler's check. On his way he notices a paper shop next to the post office and decides to cash it in there. In the shop are the owner, Meriel Fish, and her helper, Alice Shaw, who tell Clint that they are unable to cash it, Passing the post office on the way to the bank, he sees Sylvia Salisbury and Postmaster Iames Boyle sorting mail here in the post office. At the bank the tellers, Eleanor Sullivan and Clara Scorgie, send Clint to the treasurer, Melodie Rogers, who, in turn, sends him to President Louis Sponagle. The president of the bank finally authorizes the cashing of the check. Leavina the bank. Clint discovers he has no cigarettes and goes into a store to buy some. Here are Buddy Abbott, the millionaire butcher, Bev- erly Broadbent, cashier, and a flock of clerks: Barbara Goodwin, Ida Kemp- ton, Richard McLaughlin, Doris Saunders, and Barbara Tribuna. The only other customers are Iosephine Lovette and Miriam Moakley, who are both trying to buy meat from the butcher on the installment plan. Emerging from the store with his cigarettes in his hand, he sees another of his former class- mates on the other side of the street. ln his rush to greet her, Genevieve Caulfield, he trips over the curbing and hits his head, which seems to be a vulnerable spot, and knocks himself out again. He is next awakened by voices and 1 by someone rubbing his forehead. ' When fully conscious, Clint realizes B where he is and what has happened. Maybe he didn't get to play in the '1 traditional Thanksgiving Day game, but he was still one up on the rest of x us. Like Macbeth, he knew what the future had in store for all of us. CC owe grief .izboingdv The Howe High lndians of l95l opened their football season with what was expected to be one of the poorest teams Charles Chuck Lampson and his assistants had coached at Howe High School. The members of the squad, however, changed the opinion of the coaches, with the impressible record of nine wins and one defeat. The surprising defeat over a highly favored lohnson eleven at Andover proved to be the first victory for the Howe High Indians. The Howe High Warriors, now with one feather in their war bonnet, met St. Charles on the home hunting grounds, where they added a second feather and more confidence to the headdress. With two feathers and more confidence, the team took part in a thrilling battle at Dracut, with a triumphant win in the closing minutes, 14-12. The following week, Howe took a journey in the dark to Hudson, where they played one of their best and first football games under lights, winning 26-6 over Hudson, which had a previous record of six wins. With an amazing start, the Howe High Indians reached a record of four straight wins until they met with their dreadful defeat at Lexington. However, with the inspiration of Coach Charlie Lampson, the warriors bounced back into the win column for the remainder of the season with a total of nine wins and one defeat and the Suburban Championship as their reward. Though such stars as Fish Wentworth, Rich Myles, Clint lngraham, Ken Kelley, and Moose Morgan will be leaving Howe's lineup, many replacements will be found among the remaining members of the squad, ..lpz,?r'i5flf?'ff7f if with the co-captains Fred Glavin and Bill Robbins to lead them. The Howe High cheerleaders, in their pert green and white uniforms, really cheered the football and basketball teams to victory this season. The uniforms were made of Dartmouth green material, princess style, with ifhite collars and cuffs. They were lined with white taffeta, and white 'Hs' adorned the front. The cheerleading squad consisted of Lois Warren, Annette Lambert, 'Ginny' Ccrbett, Evie Swanson, Pat Toomey, Claire Wilson, Ann Sawyer, llPhyl Wasson, lackie Blake, and Nancy Barton. Their adviser was Miss Eleanor Wain, and Meriel Fish was their manager throughout the year. A football rally, conducted by the cheerleaders, was held in the Maurice A. Buck Auditorium, the day before the big Thanksgiving Day game. The girls were escorted to the stage of the assembly hall by the football players. The cheerleaders led the students in cheers to pep the football players for the next day's game. Later, at another assembly the cheerleaders were presented their green l'H's. At the annual football banquet, sponsored by the Businessmens Club of Billerica, the cheerleaders received silver megaphones, gifts of Ioseph Foley, well known Lowell jeweler. gif 4 ' gaalefga Co-Captains Reekie Baraldi and lackie Blake led the Howe Girls' Basketball team to third place in the Lowell Suburban League. We, the class of 1952, extend to Miss Belcher our sincere thanks for her expert directing and untiring perseverance in ensuring the great success of Hangman's Noose. To the class of 1953, we extend our best wishes for a successful production of their Senior Play. ji- .mega Tri-Delta, signifying three D's, is a club adapting the three D's - duty, deference, decorum as its motto.
