The Steers had to make come- backs after being penalized six times for 67 yards. The Steers had difficulty penetrating the Bronchos well distributed defense, but the linemen rode the Bronchos until they broke them in the Steers ' style. The Steers slammed into the Bronchos repeatedly, nipping their offense in the bud. Overall, the Steer coaches considered this contest to be a true test of Steer team power. B — Mike Barnes has an un- expected visitor waiting behind him while receiving a pass from Hinds. football steers peel angry orange Destroying a hex that has held the Steers back from victory for four years, the Steers learned a new way to skin a cat as they took on the Bobcats in San Angelo. A neck and neck game all the way, the Steers showed a crowd of 9,000 what determination and pride in a team can do. Plagued by fumbles and one intercep- tion, San Angelo could not control the ball once they had it, thus giving the Steers oppor- tunities which they put to use. Scoring twice before the half and once again in the fourth quarter made for a frustrated Bobcat defense. Moving through the defense, Big Spring tallied 190 yards on the ground. Using all their time outs, the Bobcats watched the clock tick away with the final score 19-18. A — Surprised by a flying tackle from behind, quarterback Gary Hinds prepares for the blow. B — Jimmy Farris stands ready for San Angelo ' s pass defender. LINEMAN OF THE WEEK Playing one of his better games of the season, Jimmy Farris receives Lineman of the Week honors for his performance against San Angelo. Jimmy caught three passes during the game with an average gain of eleven yards, giving Big Spring needed first downs. BACK OF THE WEEK Gary Hinds put on a show for Big Spring fans. Carrying fifteen times with an av- erage gain of over six yards, Gary threw the Bobcats off balance. In his passing game, Gary connected four out of nine times, making those four count well for the Steers. The Steers scored three TD ' s for Big Spring fans. LINEMAN OF THE WEEK Lineman of the Week honors go to Fillmore Gulnn. Fillmore kicks for the Steers as well as performing his lineman tasks. He provides outstanding downfield blocking in all of his attempts, thus paving the way for the Steers ' drives against Abilene. BACK OF THE WEEK In an outstanding performance against Abi- lene High, Gary Hinds scored all 21 points, leading the Steers to victory. Gary carried 17 times with a total gain of 95 yards, making Gary the leading ground gainer for the team. BACK OF THE WEEK A consistently fine player, Joe Chavez shares the honors of Back of the Week with Gary Hinds. Faking for the Steers on several plays, Joe paved the way for runs up the middle. In an all out concentrated effort by the Steers to get on the scoreboard, they drove 63 yards in five plays to make the Steers ' only touchdown. Being the seniors ' last game, the boys never once let up on their rushing or their impressive tackles. The final score was 34 for the Mojo to 6 for the Steers. LINEMAN OF THE WEEK The second junior to receive Lineman of the Week honors is Tony Dean. Tony is one of the biggest boys on the team and is a terror to any team he plays against. With his speed and size, Tony held baeli several of the Permian players. LINEMAN OF THE WEEK Mite Barnes shares the honors with Tony Dean. Barnes is another lineman whose actions live up to the Steer tradition of pride in the team and determination to do his best. Barnes was all over the tield during the game making consistently fine tackles. ' ' . ■. ' ' • ' ' iV The theme of the book is involvement. Although appropriate to this theme, the meet-your-teacher and join-a-club involvements are far less than I intend- ed. These are important only as levels of achievement. What is more impor- tant is that a person answer with a pow- erful and positive yes to life. A non- spectator attitude must be taken. True fulfillment is not found in separation from but concerned connection to life. my deepest appreciation goes to Linda Crawford, associate editor and my right hand. Scott Medford, Bruce Hiclcs, Ed Fraiier and Author Without Linda plugging away at the dirty work, the Trevino. the El Rodeo photographers, who certainly book would probably still be only half done, deserve a round of applause. These dedicated photogs were willing to climb mountains and swim lakes, as Ellen Gossett, whose sparkling Student Life section well as spend countless hours in the darkroom to obtain truly depicts the involvements of high school students, many of the pictures found in this book, Susan Cape, who designed the senior section and set Mr. Frank Brandon and Mrs. Clarinda Harris, who pulled the pattern for the underclassman sections, us out of mote than one jam. Patti Spier, notables editor, whose bubbling personality always added gaiety to the journalism lab, Robin Hoover, sports editor, who spent many hours putting together a first class sports section, Mary Ellen Hedges, organizations editor, in charge of tracking down the many organizations and scheduling them for pictures (sometimes twice). Sue Reinlcemeyer, Phyllis Faulkner, Belle Schwarzenbach, Kim Guthrie, Teresa Johnson, and Judy Rhymes, those wonderful junior assistants who had the job of matching 1,700 names with the proper faces in the underclass- men sections, Geren Martin, assistant sports editor, who lent a hand in many ways. Mr. Floyd Hobson, Taylor Publishing Co., whose regular visits provided answers for any technical problems, Texas Tech Journalism Department, for their advice and assistance, and the administration and faculty of BSHS who were always willing to give full cooperation. A most special thanks must go to Mrs. Erma Steward, a very special friend of mine. It Is not possible to describe the many wonderful ways she has touched my life in the last two years. Without her careful eye, guiding hand, and soft shoulder to rely upon, the task of compiling this yearbook would have been impossible.
