Students are returning home from work- shops and conventions to get back into the swing of high school days. Begin- ning classes, organizing clubs, and pep rallies are among the many activities that fall hosts. For the seniors, it is the beginning of their last year together, for the sophomores it is the beginning of their fun filled high school days, and for the juniors a year of never ending work. Fall makes the Seniors begin to realize the days add up to precious memories that can never be relived again. Football season highlights fall action and nearly everyone stands behind the team. The Key Club keeps the victory bell ringing at the games, the band spends hours in rehearsals pre- paring for halftime activities at the games, and the foot- ball boys face many moments of tension in order to win the games. Most ofthe stu- dents chose to dance to the music provided by the 'Just Us Four, ' although games such as jump rope, jacks, tug-of-war, and pad- dle-ball were available for the kids to play. I9 amination and fulfill routine re- quirements before being named a finalist. Sarah is a senior at BSHS, and is a member of the History Club, FHA, Latin Club, and the Student Council. She plans to attend Bay- lor University and major in sociol- ogy. NHS Grows In Beverly Peters lights the symbolic candle for character. The National Honor Society inducted forty new members this morning in the Steer Gymnasium. Jan Campbell, Beverly Peters, Mary Boren, and Kristine Britain spoke on the qualifications of leadership, character, service, and scholarship. The inductees had to meet these qualifications, have an average of 90 or above, and meet other re- quirements to be eligible for membership. At the traditional assembly before both fellow students and their parents, the new members were presented with carnations, lighted candles, and were pinned by the present members of the society. Kag Gardner Crowned Band Qweeiheari At the Midland Lee game, Kay Gard- ner was crowned Band Sweetheart by Band President Steve Stinson. The other nominees were Kitty Campbell, es- corted by Tim Knox, and Sue Bearden, escorted by Harold Cagle. The band honored the three nominees as they walked on the field by playing To- night and standing in a Zig -Zag forma- tion. The cast for the play included Stage Man- ager - Steve Comptons Dr. Gibbs - Charles Mackling Mrs, Gibbs - Gloria Gales Mrs, Webb - Diana Landrumg George Gibbs - Don Crockett: Rebecca Gibbs - Betty Flemingg and Emily Webb - Teresa Conner. In addition to the main cast fifteen others participated in the play and thirty students worked on the produc- tion staff, Mr, Dan Shockey along with student director Sue Fannin directed the entire show. Mid-ierm Graduaies Seek New Fron+iers The fanfare was quieter and the audience smaller, but the prize, a certificate of graduation from Big Spring Senior High School, was a re- ward worth earning to the 39 graduates pre- sented in the Steer gym on January 26. These students, for various reasons, chose to receive their diplomas at mid-term and perhaps go on to the new frontiers described by S, M. And- erson, Superintendent of Schools. Many will continue their education at colleges, some will go to job training and others are preparing for marriage. The A Cappella Choir was directed by Mel Ivey, and Annelle Fitzhugh was pianist for the ceremonies. Donald Anderson, ministerial student at Baylor University, gave the invoca- tion. Supt. Anderson was the speaker, and Harold Bentley, assistant principal, introduced the graduates. Diplomas were presented by John Smith, principal, and school board mem- bers, Joe Moss, Jerry Currie and Jimmy Felts. The students leaving this year will remember the old halls of BSHS even though they had a taste of the new ones. The stu- dents returning next year will be in a new, modern school.
