TO THE SENIORS OF BIG SPRING HIGH SCHOOL Time has come for us to prepare another annual message. I wo uld like to discuss with you something which i s uppermost in the heart of every professional teacher. That something is the development of per- lsonality. In other words, the development of YOU. ' There is nothing so small as a man wrapped up in himself. We hear much inlk about personality as though it were some God-given attribute. Somehow or other we Q end to associate personality and good looks, or personality and neat dress. Good looks do not make per- onality, although improvement in personality will tend to improve personal appearance, and there are sound hysiological reasons in support of this statement. However, we all know individuals of whom we say, Oh, he is not good-looking, but everybody likes her. This is but another way of saying she has an excellent ersonality. No personality has ever arrived--it has just continued to grow. No matter what your s ta g e of person- Elity development, you can improve it ixemendously by developing good social habits. As an example of what mean by good social habits, I list the following: 1. Develop anew the genuine smile. Z. Become interested in people as individuals, in their hopes and aspirations. 3. Be a good listener. Get people to talk about things they want to talk about. 4. Praise when praise is due. 5. Don't take your friends and loved ones for granted. Tell them the things which you appreciate about them. 6. Do small acts for others without expectation of benefits to yourself. 7. Observe the minor courtesies. 8. Speak well of others behind their backs. Speak ill of no one. 9. Refrain from gossip or scandal mongering. 10. Take active part in the discussions and activities of groups to which you belong. 11. Look for some good in everyone--it's there. 12. Talk about positive things and avoid the negative. Business executives are interested in young people who have social intelligence. X' W. c.
