COMMANDHKSOFHCER.USSImDDLEfDLG34D At Sea 25 October 1972 Men of BIDDLE , Today is a day of anticipation, of looking ahead to reunion with loved ones and friends after so long a separation. In just a few hours we will be reunited with them. At the same time, today is the beginning of an end. Upon our arrival in Norfolk we will observe the initial state of the gradual dispersing of one of the most magnificent crews ever to sail a man-of-war into combat. After all that we have achieved together this day is one touched with sadness as well as filled with joy. In the future, after the thrill and excitement of reunion have faded, each of you will find yourself looking back, remem- bering. Look back with pride! BIDDLE was called, and BIDDLE was chosen. Her record in combat is your record, her reputation yours. You have made BIDDLEQ you are BIDDLE - the Hardest Chargers of them all. I can think of no better way to describe my feeling for you than to quote a portion of my action report of our engage- ment against the enemy on the night of l9 July 1972: The ultimate key to combat effectiveness remains where it has always been: with the crew. The performance of BIDDLE's ship's company during this engagement was superlative! Individual and collective initiative was the order of the day throughout the attack. Almost to a man, this crew performed as veterans. No Commanding Officer could ask more from his men than was given that night. God Bless You All. C4 '5 'iitfff E. w. CARTER, III
