ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT The Engineering Department is manned by over one hundred men: Boiler Technicians, Enginemen, Machinists Mates, Electricians Mates, Hull Technicians, Machinery Repairmen and lnterior Communications Electricians. These men repair and operate the main propulsion and auxiliary machinery systems which supply the ship with steam and electrical power, fresh water, cooling water, heat, air conditioning, sound powered and telephone communications. BlDDLE's engineering plant is one of the newest conventional steam plants in the Navy. Four pressurized boilers drive two main engine turbine systems developing 85,000 horsepower and propel the ship at speeds in excess of 30 knots. The ship's electric power is supplied by four 1,500 kilowatt turbo-generators providing the equivalent power needed to light up a community of over 25,000 population. Two sets of evaporators can convert salt water to freshwater at a rate of 24,000 gallons per day. This pure distilled water is required by the boilers, air conditioning, and equipment cooling water systems and is also utilized for human consumption. The ship's firefighting and sanitary flushing water, however is taken from the sea. The Engineering Department also provides the basic staff for the shipboard fire department , disaster, and damage control teams. LCDR C. L. BALLOU Chief Engineer May 71 - August 72 Lieutenant Commander BALLOU, raised in Rochester, New Hampshire, graduated and was commissioned from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1960. He served aboard the USS COONTZ lDLG-91, and the USS McDERMUT lDD-6771, and the USS GALVESTON lCLG-31 before going to MIT. There he earned degrees as a Naval Engineer and a Master of Science. He served as Supervisor of Shipbuilding at Bath Iron Works and on USS JOSEPHUS DANIELS QDLG-271 before coming to BIDDLE in 1971. LCDR B. T. CONNER Chief Engineer August 72 - Present Lieutenant Commander CONNER, a native of Durango, Colo. enlisted in the Navy in 1955 and served 5 years before being selected for the NESEP Program. He studied at the University of Oklahoma and received a Bachelor of Science Physics degree and his commission in 1963. LCDR CONNEB's commissioned service includes tours at the Pearl Harbor Shipyard and aboard the USS JOSEPH STRAUSS QDDG-16.3 Mr. CONNER holds degrees as an Ocean Engineer and Master of Science in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from MIT. LCDR and MRS. CONNER, the former DONNA DRINEN, presently reside in Virginia Beach, Va., and have three children, Deborah, Shiela, and Bryan, Jr.
