The publication of the Bexleo this year has been made with the purpose in mind to produce a book superior to the previous ones. For four years the Bexleo has received the medalist rating from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. This rating set for us high standards. Eager to begin work, we started early. Ideas for the new Bexleo were under way in the spring of 1957. The theme of Hlightl' was chosen. Plans were formu- lated over the summer, and the book was actually begun in the Hrst week of school. . Money-making projects are vital to the Bexleo. Subscriptions only partly' pay for the book. Therefore it is with the aid of tax stamps and advertising that the Bexleo is financed. This year stamps were collected in student homerooms. A Saturday in February was set aside for tax stamp day. We visited on that day the homes of the students. The members of the stall are Barbara Harris, Editor, Dana Bray, Associate Editor, Dick Grimm, Business Manager, Bob Ainsworth, Advertising Editor, Donna Fry, Art Editorg Daryl Baxter, Literary Editor, and Carolyn Angell, Roberta Danchik, Diane Dombey, Susan C-lick, Ierry Hockman, lane Howard, Karen Kaiser, Ann Lewton, Doug Metz, Debbie Planson, joe Schlonsky, Libby Woodard, Assistant Editors. We express our sincere appreciation to Mr. Ralph Howell, our adviser, who has spent so much time and effort to make our book a success. We could not have succeeded without his expert guidance, It is through your interest and support of the Bexleo that we have been able to produce this book. The awards 'banquet was held at the Seneca Hotel. After dinner, awards were bestowed upon deserving members and then everyone enjoyed dancing and an entire fun-Hlled evening. The band was also treated to a picnic by the Bexley Band Parents' Club. A spring concert on May 27 was also given, combining the instrumental music of the 'band with the vocal variety of the choir. The concert band completed a very successful year under the capable direction of Mr. Mazarak, as it played the final notes of Pomp and Circum- stance at graduation. During football season, excitement ripples through the air on crisp fall evenings when students and parents come to watch the -game and give the team that extra needed support. The fortunes for Bexley's football squad this year can easily be summarized by observing their record, which was six wins and three losses. Under the leadership of Ben Tenwalde, the new head coach, Bexley fought 'hard and was one of the top contenders for the C.B.l... crown. Although the Lions started off slowly by losing their Hrst game to St. Charles, they compensated by winning their next two games from Logan and Grandview. How- ever, Bexley lost two other games during the season to Mt. Vernon and Worthington, but retaliated by overcoming Urbana, Delarware and Upper Arling- ton and iinall finished the season with a 14 to 6 victory over Elastmoor. Even though Bexley concluded with a 6 and 3 record and Hnished second in the league, they were rewarded by 'placing six boys on the All-Central Buckeye League team. ln addition to the ccrcap- tains, Wendell Kessler and Mick RuHing, others chosen were Bob Babbitt, Scott Burns, Karl Kumler, and Sandy Simpson. To Win the coveted title is what we always strive for, but much more important than this is good sportsmanship, fair play, and teamwork. These are the objectives of team play, and in the end the reward for upholding these ideals will last longer than any championship title. Kneeling: Coach Carl- ton Smith, Captain Ierry Hockman. Basketball Coach Carlton Smith finished his 36th year of basketball at Bexley with a very successful season by winning the C. B.tL. championship wit-h a 10-O record and ending the season with a 16-4 record. This is the 'first time in ten years any C. B. L. team has had an undefeated slate in C. B. L. play, and the fifth time in the history of the school. The Lions were captained by senior Jerry 'Hock- man, who led in team scoring and was also the high scorer in the 'C. B. L. After winning their first game against Washing- ton C. H., the Lions traveled to Urbana, where they obtained their second victory of the season. The Lions then made a clean sweep of their next Eve games before running into a spirited Worthin-g- ton team, who handed :Bexley their first loss. The following week Bexley staged a victory over a powerful Mt. Vernon team, which left the Lions in first place. ln Bexley's last five lea ue games they outran, outshot, and outplayed all of their opponents and brought Bexley one of the most convincing C. B. L. championships in the history of the school. ln tournament play Bexley defeated Aquinas, Circleville, and Grove 'City before being overcome by a powerful East team in the semi-finals, which ended in a final score of 51-42. Bexley's champions were also honored by placing captain Ierry Hockman, Dick Nafzger, and Bob Babbitt on the All-C. B. L. team. Hockman also made honora'ble mention in All-State. Coach Dana Swinehart's reserve basketball team finished their season with a 9 and 7 record. Al- though they had trouble staying on-the winning end, they did have many fine players, who were freshman Jerry Mechling, and sophomores, lack Honrberger, Dick Morrow, Stan Myers, Sandy Pollock, Tom Tussing, and Bill Rader. Bexley certainly had a basketball team of which it could be very proud and one that secured its end results only by sincere hard work, dedication, and team spirit. Track Last season Bexley High School's track team earned the sensational record of 9-0, thus enabling the Lions to become the Little Three and C.B.L. champions. This year, under new hear coach Rus- 'sell Owen and assistant Harold Ridenour, the team also seems destined for success. Fourteen letter- men retumed, including Captain Wendell Kessler, C.B.L. 440 championg Scott Burns, winner of the 100- and 220-yard dashes, and jerry I-lockman, a discus thrower who rebreaks his school record with almost every toss. Also returning are lettermen Dameron, Dennis, Hardesty, Kerr, Kumler, Mc- Cavran, Nedelman, Offenberg, Rose, and -Simpson. Bexley is also blessed 'by many underclassmen who are up and coming in the world of track. Prospects include Crall, Hornberger, Thomas, and Tussing. Much of the strength is centered around the dashes, 880-yard run, relay teams, shot, and discus. The results to date seem to justify hopes for an outstanding season. Baseball After an unfavorable start, this year's baseball team, guided by capable new coach, Clarence Pete Nonnemacher, seems destined for success. Six lettermen returned from the 57 campaign - Captain Doug Metz, Alan Blue, Bob Babbitt, Dave Brandt, Wes Rosenthal, and Joe Schlonsky. Much additional help is expected from Ron Erkis, Sam McCandlish, and Neal Noeth-lich. Bexley is ex- tremely fortunate this year to have on the staff Bob Ealibitt and Alan Blue, who are both all C. B. L. ur ers. At the 'beginning of the season, hitting was spo- radic 'but came into its own in the Arlington game where the team plated seven runs on twelve hits. Although several handicaps loom very large ahead concerning 'hitting and outfielding, it is certain that with practice, hard work, and Coach Nonne- macher's expert guidance, they can be surmounted. Bexley has had a fine record in the past, finishing either first or second in the C. B. L. for the past five seasons. We are all hoping that this year's team will ultimately reach the same goal. Swimming Coached by Russell Owen, Bexley's swimming team completed the year with a 'four vvvin, two loss record. Following this, ten boys distinguished themselves by placing in the district meet. At this same meet, one of the boys, Scott Burns, won the 100-yard backstroke. Next came the attempt For the state titles, in which the relay team which consisted of Tom Addi- son, Bruce Burriss, Boyd Crall, and Larry Harris took part. At this time Scott Bums also swam the backstroke. Wrestling Wrestling was introduced for the tirst time as an inter-scholastic sport at Bexley this year. With Ben Tenwalde as coach, the team won only one of ten dual meets but improved with each match. The District meet climaxed the season. Five Bexley grapplers, Wes Rosenthal, Ronnie Polster, Bob -Cones, Nick Baird, and Bill 'Malloy won two or more matches. Baird placed fourth in his class and Malloy qualified for the State Tournament. Polster received the Most Valuable Wrestler Award and Baird was named honorary captain at the Winter Sports Banquet. Golf Coach Smith and his golfers are looking forward to an outstanding team this year. Wit-h four ex- perienced returning lettermen, Dick Marshall, jim Merkle, Alan Wasserstrom, and Dennis Leukart, the team has been undefeated in early season matches. They have already broken the school record while using only 308 strokes in defeating Delaware. The Lions are leading the C. B. L. and City leagues, and appear to have an excellent chance for the district title. Tennis Our tennis team, participating in a sport enjoyed by almost everyone, started the season with their hopes set high on obtaining the C.B.L. champion- ship. Although they are a new team, they will surely improve with experience and have an ex- cellent chance to claim this title. This year's tennis team was coached ,by joseph Cibboney, who replaced Robert Duifey. Coach Gibboney has three returning lettermen-Captain Larry Shell, .lack South, and Stan Myers.
