On the agenda this year was the creation of the buying committee, the control of the student conduct at assemblies, the preliminary plans for an area student council, and the organization of student visitors to the council meetings. An amendment to the constitution, establishing the SOPHOMORE order of all school elections and changing the number of candidates, was passed. Preceding the elections campaigns were held to acquaint the student body with the candidates. The Bexley Student -Council completed the valuable project of the revision of the outdated high school handbook, the Lion Life. A new printer, a revised make up, many new promotional ideas, and the guidance of adviser Mr. William Matthews resulted in a greatly improved 1955-56 edition of the TORCH. Coeditors Dolores Hawraney and Niki Schwartz, in addition to ,handling the adfministrative duties, stirred ufp interest in the editorial page with their con- troversial campaign against 'fraternities and sororities. Niki and Dolores also won four of the fifteen writing prizes awarded at the Central Ohio Press Club Workshop at OSU in November. News editor Norma Wood, assisted by Lisa Weissenbach, succeeded in increasing coverage and revitalizing the back page. Norma took charge of the reporters and assigned stories. Lisa handled the extra Christmas page, including student greetings. Feature editor Iill Dudley and her assistant Carolyn Langlitt introduced .more mature features and more personalities to the feature page. The sports page, edited by Mike Berliner and his assistant Bob Wil- liams featured the football prediction contest, the TORCH Athlete of the year awarded, and Stu Sturdley. Among the eight sports writers were Joyce MoCol-m, Jerry Zelizer, and jerry Brandwene. Business Manager Bob Cohen and assistant lan Polster secured the new printer, CArt Lithograph Printing Co.D and increased advertising and sub- scription incomes. Challenged by the high rating of the '55 BEXLEO, the staff has struggled hard to cap- ture this past year in all its glory, frustrations, achievements, and happy events. Time passes, and so do all of us, but perhaps we have been able to weave together the threads of time into a happy memory for you with this book of captured hours, the '56 BEXLEO. In order to present our theme in the most expressive way possible, the staff felt it was necessary to deviate from the standard form. This means that some pages will sur- prise you, but we hope they will please you, too. Trying to do something that one has never attempted before is usually fatal without expert guidance. For all of his wise and good advice, the entire BEXLEO staff is grateful to Mr. Howell, our counselor and friend. Working together to accomplish our goal were the -following peo- ple: Phyllis Bamberger, Editor, Connie Stammler, Associate Editor, Mike Getz, Business Manager, Jack Osbun and Sonya Robbins, Art Editors: Diana Tilley, Litera Editor, and Norman I-Ialler, John Malloy, Buddy Ewart, Nancy Belt, Ellen Taylor, Rae Ellen Dauber, Linda Cul- bertson, Barbara Cohen, Babs Jones, Judy Koltun and Betty Ainsworth, Assistant Editors. This is your book, you have both supported it and inspired it. We hope you like it. When the football season finally comes to an end, the band retires to the band room to make its change from a marching band to a concert band. The players adjust their 'playing -from volume to technique. During this time the band presents If-ive concerts under the direction of John Stanton. After awards are passed out, the bandmen dance and enjoy the music of another hand. The banquet is the climax of the year and highlights the suc- cessful eflforts of the hand. Finally, on a june evening, the hand makes its last appearance of the year. Football As Coach Smith put it, This team is success- ful, not for its record, but for its great spirit and unfailing determination. Saint Charles won the first game 20-O. The Lions penetrated to the two-yard line, but were unable to score. Logan controlled the ball the first half and scored 13 points. However, Bex- ley came back in the second half and held Logan to one first down. Both Bexley touchdowns were scored by Buddy Ewart. Logan won 13-12. Arlington outplayed Bexley and won 34-0. Bob Blume scored against Delaware as the Lions played good ball. Delaware scored in the last quarter and came out on top 12-7. The Lions played a great game -but lost to powerful Grandview 27-13. Mount Vernon ruined our homecoming 12-O. In the second half of the Urbana game, the Lions again came back to score three touchdowns. Good line play was furnished by Dave Beck, Jeff Nacht, Gary Davis, and Dave Long. Bob Blume, Mike Benis, and lim Mason scored, but speedy Urbana won 27-19, The Worthington game is one for the Bexley fans to be proud of. Few high school teams have matched Bexley's play that second half. The Lions scored three touchdowns, Buddy Ewart, Bob Blume, and Mike Benis going over. Captain ,lim Mason lecl the Lions on offense with Dave Goldfarb contributing on defensive play. Bexley was the victor 18-6. Front Row: Coach Smith, Norman Haller, Dave McCandlish, Pat Morin, Bud Ewart, Don Radike, Mike Benis, Jerry Hockman. Basketball This year Coach Smith's Lions excelled more than anyone expected they would. The inex- perienced team finished the season with a 12-6 record and it racked up a 7-3 Central Buckeye League record, which was good enough for sec- ond place. The team also set a new school single game scoring record of 86 points. ln the second game of the season the Lions upset the mighty South live, who advanced to the State regionals. Later in the season Bexley also upset its bitter rival Arlington, 71-68. Pat Morin, the team's leading scorer and rebounder, set a new school scoring mark of 43 points against Delaware. The starting team consisted of dif- ferent combinations of the following boys: Pat Morin, Norman Haller, Captain Buddy Ewart, Don Radike, Dave McCandlish, Sandy Shkolnik, and Mike Benis. A strong bench was also help- ful, as the ,record shows. This year's track team, which is coached by Russ Owen and Lefty Swinehart, is not ex- pected to win the C.B.L. crown, but it will be good and will come out on top of its meets. The team is very strong in distance events and field events, but very weak in the dashes. Dave Flem- ing and Harve Clodfelter will supply the strength in the mile run and 880'yard run respec- tively. Also looking good are Wendell Kessler in the 440, jerry Hockman in the shot put and discus throw, Jim Mason in the pole vault, Frank XVilkson in the hurdles, and Scott Bums in the as es. Although hampered by inexperience, this year's team, Coach Ben Tenwalde believes, is definitely a contender for the C.B.l. title. The league as a whole is also using many inexperi- enced players. Good pitching will be supplied by senior Dick Cooper and freshman Bob Bab- bit. The hitting department is also well taken care of by veteran slugger and lettermen Pat Morin, Captain Norman Haller, Jeff Nacht and Stan Robbins. Under the leadership of the four returning lettermen and with the help of several promising looking rookies, this year's team will certainly be a good one. Girls' Sports At Bexley There is an excellent athletic program for the Bexley girl. Whether she is restricted or ath- letic, she still may participate in some way. ln intramural sports she has the op rtunity to take part in athletic events between cllaisses and home- rooms. The interscholastic program is designed for contests held among different schools. These sports include hockey, basketball, tennis, and golf. The girls participating in any activity have lots of Fun and often enjoy a victory. There are fourteen sports in the program from winter to spring. Each sport is under the leader- ship of a sportshead. The purpose of the ath- letic program is to secure good physical health, learn better sportsmanship, and create an interest in athletic activities in and out of school. From the first day to the last day of the school year the Bexley girl is kept busy in athletics. The motto of the athletic program for girls is There is some- thing for everyone. On class night this year Patsy Stebelton was crowned Sport's Queen by basketball captain Buddy Ewart and was presented with a silver medallion inscribed with the words Sport's Queen, 1955-56.
