There is still a difficult adjustment to be made. The Class of '57 has made a good beginning. Prom-minded and eager to get some projects under way, the freshmen held a very profitable bake sale early in the year. The class also sold Bexley lions', and sponsored the Freshman Hop dance at the Ieyjfrey Mansion. A loolc at the honor roll indicates that the fresh- men have a number of scholars, and a glance at the athletic events program shows that they -1.11- have athletes as well. ff m en Chosen as officers were Bruce Meyer, president, Elaine Zef, vice- president, and Kay Allen, secretary- treasurer. I ndustry, ambition, cap- ability -these are attri- butes of a class which will some day furnish leadership to the student body. b'L':'?'7 -fx I 5 39' 9 x ' A , V, '. It is the largest class in the school and has the highest number of students on the honor roll this year. It has had no trouble with unity these two years. Enthusiasm and loyalty were displayed when the class as freshmen won the Tax Stamp contest. Cooperation made the Spring F rolicv so successful that it was repeated this year. Although the class did not win the float contest at Homecoming this year, it won a gift to the class treasury from an anonymous admirer. Our basketball, baseball, and track conces- sions were very profitable, as were the dances at the high school and the jeffrey Mansion. The officers under whose leadership these activities bore fruit were Will Reed, president, Tom Broolcs, vice- president, and Phyllis Bamber- ger, secretary-treasurer. sophomores 'N-In u s . Plagued by bad luck in money-making projects, the Class of '55 has had to work doubly hard in many cases. As sophomores the class planned to handle all concessions for the spring ath- letic events, but unseasonably cold weather prevented any success. Taking this failure in stride, the class went on to sponsor a guest appearance of the F our Fresh- menf, one of the highlights of the school year. Of course, the biggest event of their junior -I Z! 771 0 T5 year was the prom. A cave entrance, buried '-1-T treasure, mammoth clam shells, and deep sea divers set the scene for the theme Under the Seaf, which was fascinat- ingly done. All this activity was di- rected by class officers Mark Pohlman, president, Patti Iones, vice-president, and Karen Walker, secretary-treasurer. gif ' .Wav ,, M31 LL. . From these seniors have emerged leaders, athletes, and scholars who have contributed much to the fine reputation of Bexley High School. F or the members of this class, these four years have slipped far too quickly into the past, leav- ing them faced with a future that for the first time in many years will not include them as a group. The class has always been known for its enthusiasm. The prom Southern Plantationf, done in the junior year, was a great success. The senior float was chosen the most outstanding in this year's home- iorj' coming parade. The last project as a class, --ti the annual senior party, was an eventful climax to four wonderful years. Officers of the senior class were Chris Gimre, president, Ben Demp- sey, vice-president, and Nancy Morris, secretary-treasurer. The Torch Innovations and improvements could very well be called the watchwords of this year's TORCH staff. With Mr. William Matthews sewing as faculty adviser, the staff labored many hours to receive the congratulations for a successful year. The staff, under the direction of Editor Bob Wistner and Managing Editor Ricky Marsh, c'hanged the appearance of the paper by switching to five-column makeup, with the addition of standard newspaper type. A system was initiated this year whereby students will work their way up to a future staff position by starting in their freshman and sophomore years. Under this plan, students will be more experienced and better equipped to put out a newspaper iby the time they are seniors. School and community news was handled by News Editor Nancy Morris and 'her staff of reporters. Marilyn Early served in the new posi ion of Copy Editor, whose duty is to proof- read all news copy. In the Held of athletic endeavor, Sports Editor Gerry Swedlow and his assistants contri- buted a complete and colorful sports section. The feature page, handled by Feature Editor Steve Nacht and his staff of writers, fur- nished us with better classroom coverage and more interesting feature stories. Those who worked on the TORCH will never forget-Saturday make-ups-headline head- aches-Roger's excellent space fillers--making deadlines- We need more news -helping the juniors get started. mr Out Standing: Carol Sue Pailet, Marlene Smoler, janet Smith, Charles Doss, Dick XVarnick, Dick Mann, Toby XVilson, jim Cornette, Nancy Miller. Bexleo Two years ago the BEXLEO staff was faced with the problem of either changing the print- ing process or cutting down the number of pages in the book. This situation was brought about by ever rising costs in the print shops. In a sense it was a question 'of quality or quantity. A deci- sion had to be made, and without hesitation the switch was made from letterpress to litho- graphy. Last yearfs book employed the lithograph or offset process, and after what appeared to be favorable acceptance by the students, we are using the same process this year. Our staff has tried to improve on the experimental ideas pioneered by the ,53 staff. VVe have combined in this book a greater number of pictures and pages with copy essential to a clear, concise book. XVe have juggled the traditional BEXLEO layout. This was done with a purpose which we believe will appear logical to the thoughtful reader. We did not work from a set theme, but let an idea-that of a book of memories-be our guide. It was not an easy thing to make suoh radical changes as have appeared last year and this, but the '54 staff felt that it could be no less courageous than the staff of ,53. We can only trust that the new look will find approval with the students, for it is for them the book is written. The staff is especially grateful to Mr. Ralph M. Howell, who has devoted tireless and end- less effort to helping us produce this BEXLEO. Members of this year's BEXLEO Staff include Carol Newhouse, editor, Marcia Slaven, as- sociate editor, joy Folkman, literary editor, Charles Capuano, art editor, Charles Doss, boys' sports editor, Toby NVilson, girls' sports editor, and Dick Mann, business manager. Assistant editors were Nancy Miller, Ben Dempsey, Dick Warnick, Marlene Smoler, janet Smith, Carol Sue Pallet, and jim Cornette. Ch oral M mic For the past six years the Bexley High School Choir has been under the direction of Mr. C. Robert Myers. It is indeed an honor and a privilege to be a member of this line group of upperclassman vocalists. A mini- mum of one year as a member of glee club is the prerequisite for eligibility, which is also based on solo tryout. This year's Choir -one of the largest-includes 72 voices. The Choir provided the music for the Thanksgiv- ing and Easter assemblies, and members of the group rendered the background for the Christmas Pageant staged by the dramatics department. The Choir's annual Christmas Concert was held on December 16. Also in 1 December, the Bexley Woman's Club was host to the group at its annual meeting. One of the year's highlights for Choir mem- bers was an exchange visit with the Ohio State Symphonic Choir. On Ianuary 29 the Choir took a field trip to O.S.U. and after listening to a practice, sang before the Symphonic Choir and its director, Professor Louis Diercks. February 9 saw the Ohio State Symphonic Choir in a return perform- ance for the entire student body in the high school auditorium. In the spring of each year, the Choir pre- sents its major production, which features an operetta every two years and a variety show ' Girly ' Ensemble The girls' ensemble pre- sented selections at the Christmas program, for the Bexley Women's Club, the variety show, and the Y- Teen mother-daughter tea. On May 7 a variety show was given, based on a west- ern setting Somewhars 'round Panther Creek. The seniors' final performance with the group is usually the evening Outdoor Con- cert, held this year late in May in conjunction with the high school band. Making its final appearance at Baccalaureate, the Choir wel- comes a few members selected from the glee clubs to fill the empty chairs reluctantly left by the graduating seniors, many of whom hear the Choir as listeners for the first time in three years. Boys ' Ensemble The boys' ensemble, known for its entertaining arrangements, was featured at several assemblies and at the Christmas concert. It contributed to the min- strel show sponsored by the Band Parents. From the Choir are chosen both the girls, and boys' ensembles, which also contribute much to musical programs sponsored by var- ious Bexley groups. Serving as officers for this school year were Larry Metz, president, Nancy Morris, secretary-treasurer and Ann Wisterman, social chairman. The glee clubs, training groups for the Choir, have shown such enthusiastic partici- pation that it has been necessary to create for upperclass girls a special group which docs not meet with the freshman girls' and boys' glee clubs. Many of these younger vocalists are thus on their way to becoming tomorrovfs Choir. Back row: Karl Himmelreich, Larry Metz, Jack Masser, Bob XVistner. A week before school opens the band is on the field, its'hup, two, left, right, left, right sounding all evening on the springy new grass. It is now that the freshman gets his Hrst taste of band procedure, and that the old members feel again the eagerness and excitement of marching season . On the night of an away game, band members pile into the chartered buses in their shirt- sleeves. carrying food, blankets, and their instruments. Then they,re off for a noisy, cheering ride to the rival school, where they emerge from the buses miraculously transformed into neat, colorful representatives of Bexley High. Many of their formations and routines are copied after the famous Ohio State Marching Band. Discipline and hard work are necessary for the mem- bers, who find that this model is not easy to live up to. XVhen the football season ends, the band goes inside, and to the delight of footweary mem- bers, becomes a eoneert band. Now the emphasis shifts from volume to technique, and the music from marches to anything from Irving Berlin to Rachmaninov. The band presents three conerets-two in the auditorium and one outside in the stadium. Then, changing their -uniforms for party clothes, band members hold an April banquet at the Columbus Country Club. Awards are passed out, and later in the evening, members ex- perience the luxury of dancing while another band plays. The banquet is the 'highlight and climax of the year. But bandmen really know it's over when they play the strains of P0mp and Circum- stance on a june evening. And a few in the rows of caps and gowns feel a pang of sadness at leaving behind the work and the fun and the companionship that they knew in the Bexley High Band. v U , -..W 77, ..v.-i-9y..- P S ty ht Mllunulw X, sports - x f XX X ' ole , ' ' S c.c. hghyi lrxawx I ,. . . al JL, 3 3. l - fm S h 5 l Sutherland ' M C Wartz J A 1 ' l Halliday V, M M 4 , i A Wil- - ,. The Football Season Bexlcyis 1953 football season was not so successful as -was expected before its start. The Lions 'had a 4-3-2 record at the close of the season. One gratifying point is the fact that the team never lost a game by more than seven points. In the St. Charles g211T1C, Bexley outplayed the Carolinians all four quarters, but an inter- ception and a 100-yard scoring run beat the Lions 6-0. The next week Coach Carleton Smith took 'his charges to Logan where they romped over the outplayed team 35-13. Bexley also won the next week by beating Mt. Vernon 21-16. A strong Urbana eleven outplayed the Lions and took a 13-6 decision. Homecoming was a bit grayed when the Bexley team managed only to tie Upper Arling- ton 7-7 in a bruising deadlock. The Lions had a few breaks but bogged down each time deep in enemy territory. The following week Bexley tied Delaware 6-6. In both of these games the Smithmen were the superior team but were unable to make the needed scoring thrust. Ver- non and Urbana being the chief competitors. The team, coached by Leftyv Swinehart and Russ Owen, has back for another season such outstanding tracksters as Roger YVilliams, Tom Boster, and Bob Connell. instead of having a few leaders, the team is well balanced and depends upon everyone to get the needed points. Arlington will bc the baseball tcam's chief contender for the league championship this season. Coach Tcnwalde has a lot to Work with, as quite a few lettermen are back this year and every position except second base is played by a veteran. Coach Dull'ey's tennis squad looks forward to a second or third place in the C.B.L. com- petition this year. So far the team has played Mt. Vernon and North and beaten both of them. The tennis men expect Delaware to be their biggest threat. Lettermen back for another year are Hockman, Rickey March, and Dick Basch. The golf team this year is one of the best in the last ten years. But the team led by 'Coach' Smith still does not have a very good chance forthe C.B.L. championship because other teams are exceptionally good this season. The first and second men on the team are Dave Daniels and Bill Meyers. Buck row: St-huligcr, Doak, Smith, llaller, Kass, Kilbourne, Schwartz, Goss, Carter, Cooper. It is hard not to do something the rest of the girls a1'e doing, and many a girl who had disdained sports finds them great fun after she begins to take part. Bexley has excellent sports equipment and, coupled with the enthusiasm of the girls, a superior sports pro- gram. In the course of a year, fourteen sports are in operation. They range from individual sports like tennis, golf, and swimming to team sports like basketball and hockey, and even to mixed sports such as volleyball. From the time she wields a hockey stick in the brisk fall air to the day when she hits a golf ball over the new spring grass, the Bexley girl is kept in the swing of sports. Besides fresh air and exercise, however, there are other benefits to girls' sports. They offer girls the oppor- tunity to adjust to their high school world. Coming off the field after helping to win or lose a hockey game, the player has met many future friends and become closer to the old ones. She has laid the foundation for a happy high school career in which sports are a large and enjoyable part. Freshmen ,union Sfgmfl uk. Harrison Sing 2515.
