This depart- ment places great stress on the mechanics of correct written and spoken English. Literature courses have been planned to give us the finest in writing from Chaucer to Joseph Conrad. liy learning to appreciate good literature while we are still in high school. we have cultivated our taste for the best. Journalism is open to juniors and seniors. This half-year course trains students in news- gathering. writing. and editing. Journalism is an excellent training school for gaining a position on the Torch. The elective course of dramatics is offered to juniors and seniors. This course will prove worth-while to the student in later years, whether he is playing a simple game of charades or acting professionally. Dramatics gives us a better appreciation of fine acting and makes us better acquainted with the great actors of today. To speak well is a great asset in life. Public speaking. offered as a half-year course. teaches one poise. assurance. and lluency in giving a speech. guidance Through the present guidance plan. Miss Marion Thomas, Dean of Girls. and Mr. H. V. Tipton attempt to help students decide on what courses they want to take, to advise and help them in choosing a college. to aid them in their adaptions to school life, and many other problems which may arise. The guidance plan is designed to aid students not only with educational problems. but also with the development of their character and perSOIl2iliIy'.
