These courses were American history, world history, American government, economics, and sociology. World history and American history are offered as full year courses, and these subjects try to teach the students the most important events of history, the ability to recognize these events and their effects, and the ability to realize their connections with present day life. American government, sociology, and economics, are offered as one-semester courses. The first, required of seniors, acquaints the student with the make up of his government and at the same time teaches him to be a good citizen. Sociology teaches the forms, institutions, and functions of our society, and a student of economics is taught the laws and conditions affecting the production. the distribution, and the consumption of wealth. W6lfA6l'l'Ld,1iI:C5 .ibeparfmenf Through the efforts of the teachers in the mathematics department, the students of the high school are well versed in the science of numbers. Those pupils who experienced some difficulty with eighth grade arithmetics are advised to take the course in basic mathematics. This course is designed to help them to pick up what they have missed and prepare them for their higher courses. Algebra is basically a tool subject which attempts to aid the students in acquiring the skills needed in a future study of mathematics. A second year course is given for those who are to con- tinue mathematics in college. Two courses in the study of geometry are given. Plane geomerty deals with the appreciation and application of the principles of geometric forms in nature. For those students who are taking advanced high school mathematics, a course is given also in solid geometry. Trigonometry, which is the study of the relationship of sides and angles of triangles, gives students further practice in logical thinking. With the world looking forward to better things at the turn of the half-Century. the Bexleo staff of 1950 has tried to present to its readers the finest Hexleo ever edited. The theme of the book. Progress, is a constant reminder of our purposes. our aims. and our ultimate goals in life. Progress is not only the theme of our Bexleo but also the foundation of a better world. As our forefathers sought improvements so do we. the class of l950. strive ever onward. ever upward. Cheerfulness and Cooperation among the staff members made the work both pleasant and en- joyable. This year especially the Bexleo was edited by many capable hands. The chief positions on the staff were held by Marc Certner. editorg Barbara Krakoff, associate editorg Jane l-loel, liter- ary editorg Nancy liuhl and Jane Auch, art editorsg Keith Krebs. boys' sports editorg Sue lieelc. girls' sports editorg .lack Jeffrey. business managerg and Colborn Addison. advertising manager. Assistant editors were Jane Wheeler, Sue Shinbaeh. Judah lfolkman. Sally Liggett. Gerry Olson. Martha Lou Clodfelter, Betty Anne Miller, and Marjorie Blashek. Once again we were fortunate to have Ralph M. Howell as our advisor. The staff will always remember how through their efforts their book was put together. The taking of pictures. soliciting for advertising and patrons. making frequent trips to the engravers. mounting pictures, and writing copy all went into the successful production of your book. Members of the staff hope that you as students will enjoy your Hvxlvo as much as the staff has enjoyed bringing it to you. Vive also hope that through this book you will always remember the many good times you had at Bexley High School in 1950. Vfvith this thought in mind we sign our final thirty. SMITH None of our sports teams this year have been bad, but that elusive championship has again escaped them all but the swimming team. The golf and track teams may yet do the trick, but as of now it is only a wish. The football team was excellent and good enough to win the CBL a great many years, but this year it could only take third after losing to Grandview and Arlington. The team did win seven of its nine clashes, including league wins over Mt. Vernon and Delaware. In non-league competition the Lion gridders downed St. Charles, Greenfield, Urbana, Linden McKinley, and Defiance. Our basketball team started slowly and lost many early season games, but then began to im- prove and at the end of the season was as good as any in the league including the champion. Con- clusive proof of the improvement of the team was shown in the final game of the season when we defeated Grandview for their only setback in league play. The league record was nine games won and three lost-good enough for a runner-up position. Here again it was a case of one outstanding team in the league depriving us of the championship that this team might easily have won in other years. In the District tourney the team downed Marion Harding and Arlington before falling before a more powerful North five. The swimming team won the city championship for the first time in school history. They first won their league and then defeated Grandview, the winner of the other league, for the City title. In addition several of the swimmers made an excellent show-ing inthe District and State meets. With most of the squad members lower classmen, the prospects for more championships by this squad are bright. The baseball team, with many sophomores in the lineup and few veterans back, has made a bad start and will probably finish with only an average record. Again it must be said that when these sophomores gain the needed experience and confidence, the baseball team will once aga-in regain the championship trophy. The track team has some outstanding performers, but does not seem to have enough balance to be a consistent winner in dual meets. These standout performers will add many points in the Lions' quest of the CBL track laurels, but at best the track team must be put in the dark horse class. The tennis team will be a better than average one but will probably be lacking the necessary depth to give it a CBL title. The golf team is made up of veterans and will probably win the CBL championship and finish high in the City league. The reserve teams this year were unusually strong. The football team lost only a few games and the basketball team finished in a four-way tie for the championship. Maybe this means that our championship drought will come to an end in 1950-51. Our teams this year as a whole have been far above average and none have been bad. The morale and spirit of the boys on the teams have been the best for the last half dozen years. If this continues, we predict many championships in the immediate years ahead because champion- ships are made from this intangible characteristic. Many seniors are boys who have contributed to this morale and have given high quality performances and we are proud of them. We congratu- late them and wish them luck and success in college. Although such a record is an enviable one. the two defeats were suffered during league competition dropping the Lions to runner-up spot in CBL play. The Lions opened the 1949 season by thrashing a spirited but outmanned St. Charles eleven 28 to 6. The Saints scored first taking the opening kickoff and moving to paydirt without halt. The Lions fought back with the same medicine taking the return kickoff and marching to the four yard line from where Tom Montague danced across. Jerry Smeck kicked the hrst of three extra points to put Bexley in the lead. lfarly in the second period ,lim Pohlman scored on a pass from Keith Krebs. and before the half ended Dick Hutchinson scored again. After a slow third quarter. the Lions again hit paydirt when Krebs passed 35 yards to Montague in the end zone. ln their second outing Bexley traveled to Greenfield where they swamped an outclassed McClain eleven 33-0. After a slow and scoreless first period. Montague broke the ice by scampering 19 yards to score. Keith Krebs hit ,lim Pohlman from the forty with an aerial for the second score. ln the same period Krebs again passed for a score this time to Montague from 30 yards out. Jerry Smeck scored in the third quarter on a 34 yard jaunt. and in the final quarter he outmaneuvered the Greenfield secondary, scoring from forty-two yards out. Bexley's victory over Mt. Vernon proved to be the Lions best played game of the year as they played inspired ball from the opening whistle. A Krebs to Montague pass early in the game put the ball on the I2 yard line and two plays later Bob Barrett tallied from the three. Smeck made good the first of three conversions. ln the same period Montague intercepted a Yellowjacket pass and scampered 65 yards to paydirt. The Lions final tally came in the third quarter when Scott lnboden plowed over from the one. The Lions suffered their hrst loss of the year being humbled by Crandview's Bobcats. 33-6 on the victors field. After a weird first half. the Lions battled the Bobcats on even terms. Buening scored the first Grandview touchdown in the first quarter from 60 yards out. Before the gun sounded ending the first half, Shell and Butler had scored on 55 and 22 yard jaunts respectively. Bexley's lone score came in the final period when Krebs passed 35 yards to Montague in the end zone. Grandview scored their final TD on a pass to Butler across the double stripe. Bexley's Lions showed little respect for Delawareis homecoming crowd as they handed the Panthers a 3114 to 6 defeat. Delawareis score came in the final canto when the Panthers recovered a fumhle on l3exley's three and two plays later Miller skirted end for the tally. All of liexleyis hopes for a CDL foothall title vanished as the Colden Bears of Arlington handed the Lions a 27 to 6 sethack. Scoring in the first three periods. Arlington was never pressed. tioodsell. Ureen. and Maloney did the scoring for the victors. Hola llarrctt thrilled the homecoming crowd on the last play of the game when he intercepted a pass on his goal line and scooted 100 yards for the score aided hy lnhodenis hone crushing hlock at midfield. Bexley regained its winning ways hy downing an outmanned Linden McKinley eleven. llolm Barrett raced 35 yards early in the first period for liexleyis first score. He scored again when he took a lateral from Keith Krehs and scampered 65 yards. With Tom Montague tallying twice on short runs. the Lions led 27-7 at half time. A Krebs to Pohlman pass was good for 353 yards and a TD and Scott lnhodcn circled his right end for 15 yards and another score moments later. Montague ended the scoring hy going 45 yards late in the final quarter. On the annual Dadis Night. the Lions put the skids under Vfvashington C. H.. 35 to 12. llarrett scooted for 80 yards to open the scoring for the evening. The visitors tied it up when Aleshire scored from the 23. Only three plays later Kramer scored from the eight. In the second quarter Keith Krehs lateraled to Jim Pohlman on the four and Jim went over standing up. After the intermission Krehs broke loose through center and raced 47 yards for the score. ln the same period Burke scored Washingtonis final TD from the three. Scott lnhoden ended the scoring hy going over from the four. The Bexley Lions hrought their 1949 foothall season to a successful finish as they downed a stuhhorn Defiance team 19-14 on the losers field. The Lions scored first when they marched the full length of the field with Inhoden going over for the score. After Defiance had tied the game up with a liehring to Smith pass. the Lions marched to another score with lnhoden again going over. The Lions scored the winning touchdown when Krebs broke through the center of the line and sprinted the remaining 28 yards for the score. The Bulldogs capped the scoring late in the fourth period. Dana Swinehart's reserve squad compiled a season record of 5 wins against 2 defeats. 'Nlany of this years reserves are destined to see action with the varsity next season. Losing only live men from last yearis team. the traeksters will have a crew of veterans on hand during the season. l,ast year's squad was not a record hreaking one and finished the season with a mediocre record. Captain Dick l.andrum did. however. reach the State meet. hut was eliminated during the early trial runs. This year the Lions are especially strong in short distance dashes and in the weight throw- ing department. Tom lVlontague. Scott lnhoden. and a newcomer in the person of John Harlor have shown exceptional speed in the early season. These three are holding down positions in the i00- and 220-yard dashes. Charley 'liinkham has already hroken the liour year old school shot put record during early season competition and undouhtedly will do likewise with the discus record as the season grows older. ln league competition it looks as if the championship will he taken hy either Bexley or Arlington. 'l'o date other CHI. teams have shown little ahility on the einders. Utlter l,ion traekmen holding key duties are as follows: 'liom Krieger. running hoth the high and low hurdles: Captain .lerry Smeck. the -H0-yard dash: Huck Quecke and Dick Hutchinson. the team pole vaulters: l'hil Hampton. high jump: and Uick Barnett. The two setbacks were suffered at the hands of North 5 to b1i in district tournament play and by St. Charles 2 to l in the season final. With seven seniors graduating from last year's championship team the outlook on the 1950 season is only mediocre. Four willing but unseasoued sophomores have been drafted to fill the vacancies left by last year's graduating seniors, Returning from last yearis diamond nine are Bob liernlohr. who has been moved from second base to the short-stop postg Keith Krebs. last years third sacker. who will handle the catching chores during the 1950 seasong Bob Tall and Dave Lowum, who will patrol the outfield: and Captain llob Barrett. who will head the pitching staff. Other members of the starting nine are as follows: Jack liernlohr, first baseg Bill Purdy. second baseg Bill Legg. third baseg and either Jerry Noellich or Dave Hess covering the other outfield post. liay Hartlxer. a senior at Uhio State. will coach the reserve squad.
