The door is closing, closing fast, On lazy days of fun, on friendly trees, On tiny trials and troubles, those we love, Unhurried hours when we took our ease. Closing now on where we stood, Laughing aloud at the great world's fears, But now the door is closed and locked, without We stand before it with our unshed tears. But as our minds grow dim with age, the doors Shall open. Into our minds shall crowd Those memories of which we were a part, And once more we shall laugh. Aloud. -Nancy Louise Purdy. ILL A ll UIHILL Quill and Scroll, an International Honorary Society for outstanding worlc in the high school journalistic field, recently gathered twelve budding journalists to its fold. These twelve students, of whom five were juniors, were awarded this distinction for the superior work they have done in their respective fields of endeavor on the Torch and Bexleo staffs. This society was created to bring to the attention of its members high ideals, codes, and creeds of all journalists. ATIU AL H0 UR UCI TY Membership in the National Honor Society, the highest honor that can be bestowed upon any student in Bexley High School, is the ultimate goal of every student who enters this institution. The object of this society is to create en- thusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character. Although there are other honors which are awarded for achievements in special fields, the National Honor Society is the only one which takes account of the well-rounded school record. Seventeen seniors, excelling in the basic qualifications of scholarship, service, leadership, and character have been selected. Upon them this outstanding honor has been conferred. Tll BEXL We, the 1943 Bexleo staff, present to you, the school, our conception of what these four years at Bexley have meant to us. Both the large and small factors of uhigh school we have sought to enclose within the covers of this book. We have had an added incentive in making this Bexleo a living memory, since many of our boys will soon be in the armed forces. To them we would have it symbolize home. We are grateful for the chance of working for the 1943 Bexleo. Page F arty-one Page Forty-two Last Row. left to right: Bob Burns, Tom Reeb, Jerry Nangle, Morton Ginsburg, Leonard Schiff. GIRL RE ERVE The Girl Reserves membership for the year 1942 and '43 was the highest in the history of the school, reaching a peak of 168 girls. This was only the beginning of a very successful year, as the G. R.'s started out with a hobo party, whose admission, a tin can, was to start the momentum for the school's scrap drive. Apple and Penny Day met with great success, as did the Hi-Y, G. R. Valentine Hop. The Easter Services, given in the morning before school all Easter week, were shared and appreciated by the whole school, while the last part of the year was devoted to a campaign to get magazines for members of the armed forces. The Recognition Tea and the Senior Farewell Banquet will long be remembered by all good G. R.'s. THE 'l'0liCll A pounding typewriter, galleys and proof-readers, editors buried in a desk of papers, deadline red-letter dates, these behind scenes of the Bexley High Torch office, though unknown to the average satisfied subscriber who sees only the smooth finished copy every Torch Friday, are nevertheless an integral part of the life of the paper. This year the Torch published an extra page Christmas issue for Bexley grads in the service, and also again won the rating of first-class excellence by the National Press Association Page Forty-four THE STAFF Executive Editor ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,.,.... This year was one of great change for the bandg for with the loss of Music Director John Hessler, who left school at the end of the semester to accept a commission in the Navy, the band gained in his place a fine leader and great inspiration in the person of Ralph Jordan. Largely through his efforts and work the band membership has increased to sixty boys and girls. H. The team was led by Capt. Ernie Plank, who proved himself to be a fine leader. After much hard work the team enjoyed a successful season. The team was well balanced, both offensively and defensively. The Lions rolled up 182 points to their opponents' 41. Bexley defeated Worthington in the opener 34-0 and looked very impres- sive in this victory. The Blue and White defeated Logan the following week 14-0, scoring two touchdowns in the first quarter and from then on played a fine defensive game. Ac Arlington's Homecoming, the Lions defeated the Golden Bears 18-0 in the first Central Buckeye League game of the year. This victory was marred by the loss of three regular backfield men, Jack Crowe, Bob Barnes, and Herb Pollock, who were all injured in the game. However, the following week without the services of three regulars the Lionlads showed what a really fine team could do and defeated the Academy 31-8. Bexley set a new scoring record, breaking the previous record of 44 points scored against Delaware in 1940, when the Lions defeated Westerville 46-7 at Westerville. Jack Crowe and Bob Barnes were back in the starting lineup after their injuries. The second and third teams saw considerable service. A determined Grandview eleven tied Bexley 12-12 in front of a large home- coming crowd at Bexley, thus putting Bexley in a tight spot in the Central Buckeye League race. Bexley came through in fine style by defeating a tough Delaware team 14-0 the following week to take the Central Buckeye League title for the third straight season. In the last game of the year, Bexley traveled to Washington C. H. and was defeated 14-13 in a heartbreaker. Bexley's great end and captain, Ernie Plank, caught a pass in the end zone on the last play of the game for a touch- down, making the score 14-13. The attempted point after touchdown failed and this moment will be remembered by the Bexley team and followers for a long time. Capt. Ernie Plank, George Krieger, Jack Minneman, Bill Bradbury, Pat Burke, Arnold Sher, and Glenn Barrett made up the powerful line. Jack Crowe's fine blocking and tackling, Herb Pollock,s passing, blocking and run- ning, Bob Barnes' fine running, and George Spencer's punting, passing, and line-backing, along with Jim Legg's running and passing made up a truly fine backfield. Capt. Ernie Plank received recognition of his fine season by making the All-Ohio Second Team. He also made the All-Central Buckeye League team along with several of his teammates, including Jack Crowe and George Spencer, backfieldg Bill Bradbury, center, Pat Burke, guard, and Glenn Barrett, end. George Kreiger, tackle, received a berth on the second team, while honorable mention went to Jack Minneman, guard, Arnold Sher, tackle, and Bob Barnes, Jim Legg, and Herb Pollock, backfield. Tllll IIARIIWIIUII The 1942-,43 Basketball team came through the season compiling 14 straight victories to finish undefeated, this being the first Bexley cage squad ever to go through a season undefeated. By taking 14 straight victories the Lions captured the Central Buckeye League title for the third straight year. An inspired Dela- ware team defeated the Lions in the first game of the Central District Tourna- ment, but a great season was recorded nevertheless. The team showed a lot of confidence and were best when the going got tough. They won several games by coming from behind, thus furnishing some real thrills for all concerned. Capt. Ernie Plank was a fine leader. He held down the center spot. Herb Pollock and George Spencer were the guards, while Jim Legg and Bob Barnes were the forwards. Frank Loehnert and Glenn Barrett were substitute forwards and Jim Geist was second string center, while Bill Davies and Sanford Stern rounded out the squad. Capt. Ernie Plank led the team in scoring and he along with Jim Legg and George Spencer made the All-Central Buckeye League team. Bob Barnes and Herb Pollock made the second team and Glenn Barrett received honorable mention. Bob Thompson, the Lion thinclads have experienced a mediocre season. At the time of this writing the tracksters have won two of four meets. The Lions started the season with a victory over Rosary 78-35. West proved to be too strong for Bexley by defeating the Lions 91-26, and in a triangular meet with University and Rosary, Bexley came out second with 52 points, while University won the meet with 57M points and Rosary scored 292 points. The Drytowners from Westerville were victims of the Lions in a dual meet with Bexley winning 69-48. I The Central Buckeye League meet is to be run on the Bexley track this year and will take place under the lights. I Walter Bauer has taken several firsts in both the mile and half-mile and has proven himself to be a fine runner. Capt. Thompson, Jim Geist, Stanley Rossbach, and Arnold Sher have alternated in the clashes as well as composing the 880-yard relay team. Pat Burke and Arnold Sher have been working on the weights as well as the dashes and George Krieger and Jack Shannon are tossing the discus. Hurdlers are Jim Lewis, Jim Geist, and Bill Jones. Jim Hensel, Pete Sodt, and Bob Stevenson round out the squad, all three being dis- tance men. THE '42-'43 SEASON Bexley 75 ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,.... THE DIAMO ll In this, Gene Mechling's first season as coach 'of the baseball team, it looks as though the Lions will again be the League champs for the third straight year. At the time of writing Bexley has won seven league games and lost none and needs only one more victory for at least a share of the title. So far the Blue and White diamond nine has won eight straight. The seasonis opener was with Central, and Bexley came out on top of an error- filled game 11-8. Bexley then began league competition, defeating Arlington 8-1, with George Spencer pitching a one-hit game. Bad weather prevented play for a week at this point, and the next game George Spencer pitched a no-hit game against the Academy 5-0. Herb Pollock then set back Arlington 10-2 in a fine performance. Spencer turned in a fine hill performance, defeating Grandview 11-0. Pollock several days later defeated Grandview again 10-0. The following day Bexley de- feated Delaware 1Z-3 in a free hitting game. The last game previous to this writing Bexley, behind Pollock's fine twirling, set down Westerville 8-0. The mound duty for the season went to George Spencer and Herb Pollock, with Bill Grant doing a fine job of catching. The infield consisted of Capt. Bill Mc- Dermott on first, Glenn Barrett on second, Ernie Plank on third, and Jim Legg at short. The outfield was patrolled by Jack Crowe, Frank Loehnert, and Herb Pollock or George Spencer, when the latter two were not serving pitching duty. Art Fother- gill was utility infielder, Dick Radow second string catcher, and Bob Barnes, Ted Seckel, and Kenny Kauffman, utility outfielders. THE '42-'43 SEASON Bexley 11, Hs., M..
