Page Sixty ,Mad Jon owner HE record ot the Lions ot 1940-'41 has been the best ever to be made in the history ot Bexley High School. The boys won the championship in all major sports: tootball, basketball. baseball, and traclc. and also in the minor sport tennis. They did not lose a League contest in any ot the above sports. The tooball team, which was undeteated and un- scored on in all its games. was the best team ever to wear the Blue and Vvhite. They were considered one ol the best teams in the state ot Ohio and will long he remembered by Bexley students and tans. It will he many a year before their equals tread the Bexley gridiron. The basketball team had almost as good a record as the toohall team. They won 10 straight in League competition and lost only to Xenia Central, which later went to the semi-tinals in the State tournament. I do not believe they were the best team ever to represent Bexley. but they were-one of the three best teams in Bexley COACH CARLTON H- SMITH basketball history. They are the only team which ever won all 10 games in League competition and the cham- pionship. The baseball team is tar above the average because ot the excellent senior battery. They are also undefeated in League competition including a noehit game with Academy and a one-hit game with Grand- view. They have dropped only one game out ot six so tar and promise to hang up an outstanding record. The track team is on a par with the other champions, but have lost two meets so tar out ot tive. However, they ran up the highest score ever to be made in winning the C. B. I... title. They scored SGVZ points to 54Vg tor the nearest competitor, Washington C. H. ln this event Magnuson brolce the mile record that has stood since 1956 with a 4:47.6 mile. This team will probably not be defeated again this year, to lay up one of the best records in the history ot the sport. They may finish well up in the district meet also. The tennis team is the best ever to wield the racquet tor Bexley and this year one ot the best teams in the state of Ohio. They lost only one match last year and are undefeated this year and ot course have smothered everything in League competition to win the championship. They have defeated such teams as Portsmouth, Canton, McKinley, and Zanesville. They rant: along with the football team as the all- time great tennis team ot Bexley. The golf team is very mediocre, having lost over halt ot their matches. The swimming team tailed to win a meet. In summary, it is the greatest sport year in the 19-year history ot the high school. With tive cham- pionships, the all-time best football and tennis teams, and one ot the best basketball teams, the seniors and fans ot Bexley can loot: on this year as the wonder year of sports, and it will be etched on their memories for a long, long time. Swim!! f 55 HE hest Bexley football team in the schools athletic historyu-- this state- ment summarizes the lorilliant record of the 1940 gridiron squad which swept through all opposition to emerge undefeated and unscored on and, once again, champions of the Central Buclceye League. A perfect season was marred only hy the heartbreaking scoreless tie in the season,s finale with Washington C.H. Well balanced, hoth offensively and defensively, the Lionlads kept their own goal line untouched while lorealiing through their opponents for a grand total oi 199 points. Avenging last year,s defeat, Bexley trounced Worthington 19-0 in the season,s opener. The Lions flashed an unheatahle passing and running attaclc, scoring in every quarter hut the last. The Blue and Vvhite traveled to Logan to pull the surprise of the year hy heating the Chieftains 6-0 on a long pass from Herhst to Tippett. Page Sixty-one Page Sixty-two CAPT. BROWNE Again reversing last yearys decision, the Bexley gridders swept through Rosary with a hriiiiant running attack to win 26-0. John Sophos, junior haifhacic, scored three of the four touchdowns. Grandview, Bexiey's traditional rival, was trampled hefore a large home- coming crowd to the tune of 14-0. The Lioniads showed great power on the ground while smashing all the Bohcafs attempts of retaliation. A new scoring record was set when the Lions swamped Delaware with a powerful offensive showing 44-O. Even Bexiey,s second team ran wild with Andy Burns sparking the attack. Arlington proved to he just another team as the Blue and White pushed over 27 points to the Golden Bearys none, the widest margin in the suhurhanites' long rivalry. Academy threw a scare into Bexieyys ioyai followers when the Vikings ad- vanced to within six inches of the Lion,s goal. Nevertheless the uFighting Lionsu held the line and wen on to win 24-0. The Lioniads helped to inaugurate Vvesterviiieys new athletic field hy smash- ing the Drytowners 59-O. Highly favored to win, Bexley was rudely upset hy Washington C. H. when the Blue Lions held the Blue and White to a scoreless tie in the season's tinai game. Set hack hy heavy penalties, Bexley was not ahie to capitalize on its scoring chances in the last quarter. Don Tippett, Dick Vvaiicer, Dick Rose, Bob Vvright, Bolo Miller, Chuck Plank, and Dean Sutton made up the powerful line which held opponents scoreless throughout the season. With Boh Herhsfs passing, Dean Browne's line trucking, John Sophos, open field running, and Jay Muiharger's fine hiocicing, Bexiey's hacictieid was the most powerful in the schoors history. Dick Walker, Dick Rose, and John Sophos gained herths on the Ali-City Team while Dean Browne was chosen captain of the Ali Central Buckeye team which also contained Dick Vvaiicer, John Sophos, Dicic Rose, and Bch Vvright. Dick Walker was chosen on the third team AH-Ohio and Dick Rose, John Sophos and Dean Browne received honorahle mention. Lett to Right-Bill Magnuson, Dick Kaiser, Andy Burns, Frank Brinkman. EXLEYS basketball team of 1940-41 was one of the hest ever to represent this school. The Lion quintet took the Central Buckeye League cham- pionship with ten straight wins against no 1osses and ended up with 14 victories and on1y one defeat. Dis- playing great a1oi1ity to come through in the pinches, the Lioniads took four games hy a two point margin. The team was welt haianced offensively with Dick Walker, Frank Brinkman, and Andy Burns scoring freely throughout the season. Bill Birch, Dick Green- hurg, and Jim Heniey showed fine defensive ability in stopping the opposition. The Lions set a record score in the opening game as they swamped Grove City 59-21. 1n the second game Xenia Centrai spoi1ed a perfect Bexley season hy stop- ping the Lionlads 58-21 after Bexley had 1ed 11-0 at the end of the tirst quarter. The Blue and Vvhite then swept through Niarion Harding and Lancaster 41-51 and 42-51. CAPT. WALKER Opening C. B. L. p1ay, the Lions tost no time in taking the first round with straight victories over Washington C. H., Academy, Grandview, and Delaware. Bexiey then took time out from Ieague play to eke out a 44-42 victory from Arlington in a hard-fought contest. Returning to C. B. L. contests, the Lionlads swamped Academy, trounced Westerville twice, crush Grandview for the second time, and managed to heat Delaware by two points to gain the Gentrai Buckeye League championship with ten victories and no defeats. 1n the district tournament the favored Bexiey team was completely out of form. and the Lions were whipped hy an improved Arlington team 45-50. The Bexley team started off the Greater Columbus Golf League with a tie match with East 6-6, but came back to beat South 7-5. They suffered their first setback at the hands of iast yearys co-champ, North QV2-QVZ. The following weeic, a strong West team took them into camp 815 to 515, and Grandview upset them on May 3. The team still has to meet at the time of this writing: Aquinas, Central, Academy, and Upper Arlington and may come through with some well-cteserved victories. This yearls team was iect by Captain Dick Rose at Number 1 position, fot- lowed by Dan Lorenz at Number 2, Howard Mitchell at Number 5, Bill Nlagnuson at Number 4, and Bob Masser at Number 5. ZZMQMK fcontinuecl from page 66, Freshman Bill Grant, gained much valuable experience hehinct the plate when he relieved Burns and is heavily counted on to take over the catching duties next year. Dan Lorenz and George Spencer. who toot: over the relief twirling positions. Jim Henley, utility outfielder, and Sid Tyroler, utility intietrier. rounded out the varsity team. As it has been said before, this was the best all-around basehati team ever to represent Bexley. The hitting power of the team is shown by the' batting averages ot the players. Not one is hitting below the three hundred mark and in one game the team average, as a whole. was a terrific .472. The pitching was excellent as shown by the no-hit game, one-hit game. and two shut-out victories. so far this year the squad has scored 62 runs to the opponents' ll in tive games.
