It is the wish of the BEXLEO staff that throiigh the lan- guage of words and pictures here recorded, your memories of Bexley High School may endure. So enter that daily thou mayst grow in knowledge, wisdom, and love eau Sang There comes a time in all our lives When all good things must end, When high schools days are over And we must Part from friends. But ere we leave, just one more word To say we'll all be true To memories of our high school days And you, good friend, and you. So as we gather here tonight, Our voices let us raise To Alma Mater, Bexley High, And loudly sing her praise. And o'er all else within our hearts, These words are ever sealed: But strong in will to strive, to seek, To find, and not to yieldn. -Ann Lewis Marion Huntington H. C. QUILL AND SCROLL 1 UILL AND SCROLL is an honorary society which was established to rec- ognize merit in high school writers and to encourage high aims in jour- nalistic attempts. Candidates must send their work to a board in New York, and acceptance to membership depends on a favorable judgment of the work sub- mitted. A chapter of Quill and Scroll was organized for the first time in Bexley High School this year. The main reason for its formation was the need for an additional standard of accomplishment in the Journalism classes. The Quill and Scroll members sincerely hope to establish a good precedent for future students of Journalism. Pagr Fifly-ft Pagr' Fifty-tix Back Row-left to right-Bill Lewis. Ted Seckle. SMITH Payf Sixly-four ' HE major sport teams for 1939-1940 have not been so successful as usual in winning championships. Only the baseball team seems destined to win a championship. The foobtall team lost only to Grandview in the League and finished second. The basketball team did likewise, losing only to Grandview lboth gamesj and finished second in the League. The track team finished third in the C. B. L. meet behind Westerville and Delaware. The baseball team is tied for the League lead now and seems certain to have the power and ability to come through for the only major champ- ionship. Both the basketball and baseball teams were beaten in the first round of the District foufnafnenf. The football team had a very fine line, but the backfield was inexperienced and new, conse- quently, we won only three games and lost six. All three wins were in League competition, how- ever. North and Washington C. H., were too pow- erful for us, but we lost heart-breaking, close games to Worthington, Rosary, and Arlington. The team was not so bad as the record indicates but was very unlucky. Coach Carlton H. Smith The basketball team was very much above the average, but played the most difficult schedule ever attempted by a Bexley quintet and won eight and lost eight on that schedule. The losses were inflicted by such teams as Lancaster, Marion, Mt. Vernon, Xenia, Washington C. H., and Grandview. All others fell victims to the Lions, who had a nice offense and a creditable defense. However, Bexley failed to defend successfully the District crown gained by the great 1938-1939 team. The track team was very mediocre because of poor balance. Good men were not available for all events, however, in some events we were very strong. We were able to finish only third in the league, but to date have won two triangular meets and lost a dual meet to Wes- terville. After championships in 1938 and 1939 this year's team's light is dim by compari- has tried hard, and results will show up next year when it is will be won. son. The team is young and hoped another championship outstanding squad and to date has lost only a single fluky while winning seven. It also lost the first game in the district tournament to West High School. It has a fourteen-game schedule, the largest ever at- tempted by a Lion team, and probably will win twelve of those games along with League championship. The baseball team is an five-inning game to Academy The tennis team is one of the best teams ever to wear the Blue and White. No member is particularly outstanding but all are very good players. They did not win the singles or doubles championship in the League, however. The doubles team has a chance to win the District crown. They have won five and lost one to date and will probably win all their other dual matches. The golf team is only average. They have won one, lost three, and tied one, so far. The swimming team was very ordinary this year, but they did win two out of three meets. In summary we must say that our success has been only fair. We took many second places in championships but they do not bring the cups home. They have all been fine teams and worked hard, but Dame Fortune turned her head. Next year it looks like championships in everything but baseball. That is a big order, but this year's underclassmen are determined it shall be so and the outgoing seniors .are cheer- ing them on. -6 8-4 S GJ DD L4 O Q3 U bi b GJ ,-J .D 0 CD J GJ ws 0 :A Eg 'sz :MD gl-4 '-U A- 1 S5 'VL Us QI iii M., E gi wi? ,E can .UCD 52 mi? Page Sixty-,fix FOOTBALL O describe the grid season of the 1939 Lionlads with any other adjective than mediocre would be inaccurate. While the number of Lion losses stands out like an injured digit, the season sparkled now and then with stellar performances. The Blue and White launched upon their season with a thrilling encounter, the guest of Worthington High School, the hosts edging the Lionlads into the lose column 13 to 12. The Lions met no better fate the following week when they suffered a 32 to 0 humilia- C . tion at the hands of the North Polar Bears. After that apt. Huntington defeat, the battered eleven emerged only to taste defeat at the hands of Holy Rosary 6 to 0. Gladdening the hearts of hundreds of fans who remained loyal to the colors, the Blue and White returned the following Friday to trounce the Westerville Gridders 24 to 0. After meeting an insuperable eleven from Grandview and going down for the count 19 to 7, the Lions returned again to be the victors in the fracas featuring the Delaware Willis Orange and Black, the result: 7 to 6. A highly touted Arlington team was next for the Bexley boys who bit the dust to the tune of 6 to 12. Again emerging from defeat to victory the Lionlads scuttled the Academy Vikings 25 to 6. In the final game of the season the champions of the South-Central League, Washington C. H., won a thrilling game from the Lions 13 to 0. Outstanding were the performances of Bexley's Captain Billy Huntington, who had what it takes and gave it every minute, Big Bill Kindle, stellar Lion tackle, Dick Rose, junior guardg and Sophomore Jay Mulbarger, who gives promise of being the offensive nucleus of championship teams to come. To the boys are due the credit of working hard and the consolation of not getting the breaks. Back Row, left to right-Bob Smith, Leroy Warren, Andy Burns, Bill Nlatchneer, Charles Gerhold, Mike Burns, Coach Carlton H. Smith. Front Row-Bill Birch, Dick Walker, Fred Bernlohr, Don Tippett, John Loehnert. 1 1 BASKETBALL OTWITHSTANDING the fact that the 1939-40 Lion- Mw IN lad basketball team outscored their opponents, totaling the efforts of the entire season, 623 to 5383 the quintet failed to reap the glory of victory in the win-lose column, being defeated in nine contests and defeating in but eight. vi 64,3 aww' The '39-'40 Blue and White aggregation drew a coincidental parallel to the 1937 quintet in that both teams won and lost the same number of games, the current dribblers ending the season a notch higher in league standing, however. Extolling the praises of the '37 Lionlads the 1938 Bexleo stated: Bexley High presented one of the best basketball teams in recent years. The Lions finished third in the League, the highest any Bexley team has ranked in the last five years. Capt' Bernlohr Since that fateful year Bexley has boasted two great teams: the Central Buckeye Champions of 1938 and the Central Dis. trict Champions of 19393 therefore, while not the outstanding team to represent Bexley in recent years the '40 Lionlads will occupy an enviable position in the annals of basketball at Bexley. The high spot of this year's season was the Junior Varsity team, which achieved stellar rating by winning eight straight games in league play, copping the undisputable Reserve League crown. In the course of this celestial series of spherical sessions the V.'s dropped but three games, winning twelve. A great part of the credit for this great team goes to Assistant Coach Swinehart, reserve mentor. In the pre-season games the Lions defeaetd Hilliards and Grove City decisively, but lost to strong Lancaster and Marion Harding quintets. The team was unpredictable in pre-Christmas fracases, showing flashes of brilliancy only to be overshadowed by very mediocre performances following. Pa fl 1' Sixfy-.n'1'fu Coach Swinehart By defeating Columbus Academy, Delaware, and Westerville in both rounds of league play, the Lionlads definitely established them- selves as the Number Two team of the league. Grandview, defending champions of the C. B. L., were happily defeated once in the season by Westerville, but the Bobcats returned to hand a stinging 37-ZZ setback to the Blue and White. The team lost to Mount Vernon, Washington C. H., Xenia, and Upper Arlington. The 1940 schedule, which included such powerful bucket-brigades as Mt. Vernon, Lancaster, and Marion Harding, was undoubtedly the toughest ever attempted by a quintet bearing the Blue and White. Offensively, the team averaged about 36 points per game which should be good enough to win most encounters. However, the teamas greatest trouble lay in the defense department where the opponents were allowed to score an average of 32 points per session. If not wholly successful, the season was none the less spectacular and the team enjoyed the full support of an enthusiastic public. BASEBALL X INNING their first seven games before losing to Academy, this year's baseball team looks like the best ever to represent Bexley High School. In spite of the Academy defeat, it is almost certain that the Lions will capure their third straight C. B. L. crowng being tied for the top notch at press time. In two pre-season practice skirmishes Bexley trounced the Cowboys from Columbus West 8 to 5 and humbled the North Polar Bears 8 to 6. Keeping this same vic- torious pace, the Lionlads easily defeated their next four opponents: to wit, St. Charles ftwicel 4 to 1 and 8 to 0, London 9 to 0, Grandview 8 to 0, and Delaware 11 to 5. It was then that an overconfident Bexley Nine was humbled by a weak Academy team to the tune of 6 to 5 in an abbreviated game which was halted at the end of the fifth inning by mutual agreement. Capt. Davies In the last game played by the Blue and White prior to this writing the Lions were massacred by a much improved West aggregation 14 to 5 in the first round of the Central District Tournament. Bill Birch and Mike Burns, stellar junior battery, started a majority of games, while Captain Spencer Davies took care of the balance of the starting assignments on the hill. Jack Ferguson accounted for the relief twirling. When not pitching, Davies played first base, otherwise Frank Brinkmann and Rodney Wolfe alternated at the initial sack. The keystone combination was composed of Bradley Salt at second and Fred Bernlohr at the short stop post. Johnny Loehnnert held down the hot corner. The outer gardens were capably patrolled by Chuck Gerhold, Dick Greenberg, and Charles Plank. The 1940 bag-baiter squad had no serious weakness in any department. The pitching and catching were excellent, the infield clicked exceptionally well, save in the West fracas, and the outfielders didn't chalk up an error during the entire season. The batting division could have shown higher averages, however, the boys came through admirably well in the tight positions. , Back Row, left to right-Carlos Sims, Rodney Wolfe, Howard Mitchell, Frank Brinkmann, Charles Rogers, jim Kessler, Jim Henley, Keith Miller, Jim Brunner. The X Q sm QQ , Q ,.,,.,.,, i or s we victory gleam was somewhat dimmed when the Blue and White bit the cinder at the hands of Westerville in a dual session to the tune of 45 to 68. Capt. Yaekle The Lions again came into their own in the next tri-meet to emerge with flying colors, Washington C. H. and Aquinas being the losers. The 'scoreboard read: Bexley 67, Washington C. H. 59li . ' and Aquinas 23. The next encounter was the Central Buckeye meet which Bexley entered as a highly touted aggregation but which proved to be the nemesis of the Blue and White scanty-clads. Westerville took top honors with 59M points, Delaware, the host school, came in second 541'Q, while Bexley took the show spot with 3992 markers. With the bitter taste of defeat still in their throats, the Lionlads came back the following week to trounce Arlington and Academy in a triple fracas 54 l,f'3, and 43 2, 3, respectively. Bexley proved weakest in the field events, the ovalists maintaining an excellent record. Stellar among the Blue and White were Captain Don Yaekle, flashing through the 4405 Phil Burgess capturing his share of 440 honors along with Don Tippett, High-hurdler Dean Browne, Tom McCunniff and Jim Mitchell starring in the 100 and 2205 and the unbeatable Lion miler, Art Magnuson. UE to the difficulty encountered in obtaining meets the Bexley Sea Lions' aqua antics were limited to three matches in their abbreviated season. The tanklads had little trouble drowning the University High aggregation to the tune of 44 to 29 and scored an easy victory over the Holy Rosary aquarians 33 to 24, however, the Lions met their Water loo in the Xenia fracas when they were submerged to a depth of. Outstanding performer and Number One star of the Blue and White was Otto Schenk, captain of the 1940 team. For three years the tank squad has been built around this luminary and his loss will be keenly felt by the 1941 Sea Lions. Laurels rest lightly on the moist brows of Charles Bolon, 50-yard free stylist, Bob Blashek, taking honors in the 100-yard backstroke and the medleyg Jim Courtney, Bexley's plank-champ, Billy Fisher, who was outstanding in the 100-yard breast stroke and medley events, and Chuck Purdy, who showed good results in the 50-yard free style. Outstanding underclassmen frolicking in the HQO for Bexley was Sophomore Bill Matchneer who gave a good account of himself in all departments and gives indication of being the Number One point-getter of the 1941 squad. TENNIS Back Row, left to right-Coach John F. Schacht, Marvin Rosenthal, Charles Purdy, Dick Dorst. Front Row-Dick Greenburg, junius Hoffman, Clyde Hickle, Tom Benua, john Loehnert. ITHOUT question or reservation Bexley sponsored the best all-around tennis team in the history of the school this year. While no brilliant star shown forth in his own right, the entire squad was very well balanced and func- tioned well as a unified team. In the total of games played pre-pressn the Lions have suffered but one setback, that in a hard fought match with a mighty Lancaster aggregation 4 to 5. The re- mainder of the sessions all had happy endings, the Lionlads defeating Granville 5 to 0, Academy 7 to 0, Grandview 10 to 1, Arlington 4 to 2, and East 7 to 0. After this impressive showing the Lions entered the Central District Tournament where they faired consolingly well, placing Clyde Hickle in the final round and the Dick Greenberg-Dick Dorst combination in the semi-finals. Clyde Hickle and Stan Kessel alternated at the first and second slots, Tom Benua maintaining the third. The fourth and fifth positions are shared by Junius Hoffman and Dick Dorst. Charles Purdy and Nicky Rosenthal accounted for their share of the season's success. Because of frequent conflicts of the tennis schedule with the baseball calendar the valuable services of Johnny Loehnert and Dick Greenberg were lost to the Lion squad a great part of the season. The staff chose also to emphasize legibility in the selection of type. The many painstaking hours of labor known only to makers of books will not have been in vain if they capture for you, the reader, a permanent appreciation of the school spirit. The editors desire to express to Miss Bethel, and to Elaine Kelley and Ula Bramlage, gratitude for typing the manuscript. For many seasons under the guidance of Miss Selbach, and more recently of Miss Geist and Mr. Howell, the Torch has maintained a high standard of dignity and excellence, a testimonial of which is the superior rating accorded each year by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. The editors of the Bexleo salute the current staff of the Torch for upholding the tradition of other years. This year the entire editorial and business staffs of the Torch have made a strenuous effort to wipe out an accumulated deficit. The effort has been so successful that next year's staff enjoys the happy prospect of starting with a clean slate. Page Sewrzfy-eigllf I 1 1 I T'-3 Www, A if an N S 5.5 ning? Although these figures are none too impressive, the possi- bility of a better record at the end of the season is very bright as the Lionlad clubbers will face weaker opponents than those already encountered. Playing in the number one position is Captain Roger Stark. The second place is in the capable hands of Dick Rose. The Black brothers, Dick and Jack, hold down the third and fourth positions. The Lions opened their season suffering a 92 to 22 defeat at the hands of Central. The next two weeks the team met with some success, defeating Aquinas 72 to 42 and breaking even with London 6-all. The following week they were downed by West 72 to 42 only to be shellacked by a strong Grandview squad 82 tO 3V2. The possibility of winning the Greater Columbus Golf League, of which Bexley is a member, is very slim, although the Blue and White should rank in the upper brackets. The efficient and generous efforts of many people made possible this BEXLEO. The Staff appreciates particularly the assistance of the I-Ii-Y Club, the collectors of sales tax stamps, and the advertising salesmen. Paw Ezghly mah! WBNS Contributes Major Part of News to Central Ohio., More and more, the people of Central Ohio are coming to recognize the big part WBNS plays in their daily receipt of World news. To play this part, the sta- tion has arranged to bring many and varied newscasts to its listeners. Jim Cooper, who has been with the station 6 years, is heard four times daily and once on Sunday. His news keeps you up-to-date on the local sit- uation, as well as the international. There is no one like Genial Jim to bring you the news with a smile. His memory parade for those with birthdays totaling 70 or more is a popular feature. His first broadcast is heard at 7:30 a.m. Others occur at 12:15, 5:15 and 9:45 p.m. Paul Sullivan is another popular com- mentator, whose selection of the news is much appreciated and goes a long way to keep you up on what's going on all over the globe. He is heard Monday through Saturday at 5:30 p.m. Another glimpse into the World's news is provided by Elmer Davis, the famous CBS news analyst. He is heard Monday through Friday at 7:55 p.m. Bob Trout, whose voice is familiar to millions, is on the air each Monday through Saturday at 10:00 p.m. His news budget is usually made up of the latest from Eur- ope. Kate Smith is another popular entertain- er who has turned commentator.
