The student missed a large part of the education available to him if he was not able to communicate and appreciate the culture of the people whose language he studied. The teachers in our language department attempt- ed to give pupils practical training which they would find interesting and useful as they meet people with different backgrounds in a modern world. Miss Elsie Watters directed the language depart- ment this year. The teachers in this department of- fered classes in French, Spanish, German, and Latin. For several years, Mrs. Lila Hennessey has served as faculty advisor for the German Club. Most college preparatory students were required to study a language for at least two years. Usually, these pupils found that the preparation they re- ceived at Beverly High was completely sufficient, they could compete for entrance to institutions of higher learning with students from the entire country. Those students who took the oral com- prehension tests this year used the language lab during free periods for more extensive listening practice. This work was voluntary, and pupils who used the program to its full advantage found it most beneficial in the tests. Miss Watters hopes that next year the facilities at the new high school will allow for more extra-curricular activities by the language department. BUSINESS DEPARTMENT The Business Department of B.t-l.S. was once again under the direction of Miss Eleanor Lambertson. Stu- dents were provided with sound vocational training which would enable them to find and hold a position after graduation and help them to become good citi- zens and consumers. A wide variety of courses was offered to students in the business department. They received instruction in business mathematics and bookkeeping, shorthand and typing, office and secretarial practice, economics and law, salesmanship, advertising, and distributive education, and consumer education. There were a few extra-curricular activities offered to students by the Business Department. Business man- agement of the Aegis and Beverlega, which consisted of advertising, subscriptions, and typingj were all handled by business students. Miss Rose Brancato headed the Aegis business department, while Miss Margaret Miner directed the Beverlega advertising committee. Mrs. Evelyn Ricciardi advised the Beverlega subscriptions committee, and Mrs. Constance Golds- worthy headed the'Beverlega typing committee. Also, Mr. Edward Deep advised. the Retail Merchandizing Club, a club associated with his distributive educa- tion class. 23

Apprecikzfivn and Discrimination MUSIC AND ART There is more to art than a few colors thrown together and more to music than rock 'n roll according to Miss Elsea Bridgess and Mr. Lawrence Drouin, the directors of Beverly High's art and music departments, respectively. Miss Bridgess' students had an oppor- tunity to acquire discrimination in taste and appreciation of beauty in our daily lives through the study of general crafts, general art, commercial art, applied art, and jewelry making. The pupils mas- tered skills which provided opportunities for profitable careers in the constantly expanding field of art. Mr. Drouin encouraged stu- dents to improve their musical abilities, as well as to appreciate and understand both classical and popular music. The chorus, band, and orchestra, which accepted all interested students willing to devote the required time and effort, were directed by Mr. Drouin. Mem- bers of the three groups participated in various school functions: the band entertained at football games, the orchestra played at several assemblies and also at graduation, chorus members sang at concerts and assemblies. The instrumental and choral students were eligible to compete for membership in the Massachusetts Dis- trict and All State Music Program. With the additional space and equipment in the new high school, both the music and art depart- ments will be able to serve an increased number of students.
