Twent Anniversar Beverlega 1962 marks the twenty-fifth printing of BEVERLEGA. Through a brief comparison of the first yearbook in 1937 and the 1962 edition it is obvious that BEVERLEC.-fs his- tory has been one of progress and expansion. BEVERLEGA, or THE AEGIS, as the book was entitled in 1932. was the sixty-three page Senior Edition of the AEGIS literary maga- zine produced under the supervision of Mrs. Helena Corbett. The enterprise was indeed a daring one with exceptionally good results, considering the many obstacles and handi- caps which had to be overcome. Still, there were those problems including a lack of pro- fessional photography, and because of them the book, as might be expected, was a far cry from the elaborate two hundred page production of today. Although a survey of the edition produced over the past twenty-five years reveals numer- ous technical changes, such as the various themes and the title which was THE AEGIS and then SENIOR MEMOIRS before it be- came BEVERLEGA, the fundamental pur- LAYOUT COMMITTEE .-X. The AEGIS Assembly, presented during the annual drive for subscription to the publication, proved to be, as always, one of the highlights of the year. Under Miss Donovanis supervision, the well-known and popular magazine of creative writing, sports, art. editorials, and humor was issued four times during the year, with each isue we hope, upholding the traditional quality and high standards main- tained by Mrs. Corbett for so many years. All student affairs and problems in the operating of the school are acted upon by this body. A representative and alternate are elected from each homeroom in the school and also seven members-at-large. four seniors and three juniors, who are chosen from the members of the previous year's council. All students are encouraged to par- ticipate in the Student Council by offering suggestions for school improvement through their homeroom representatives. These suggestions are then brought up at the Council, which meets every other week. The Student. Council has conducted several projects, such as the fall Kick-Off Dance, the Spring Prom, school book covers and folders. purchase of school equip- ment, buses to football and basketball games. the Eldridge Fund for ill students, and the publication of the B-Hive. This year a pep committee was formed to promote interest in all sports: basketball, hockey, track, and baseball. They also march in several parades throughout the year. The band has been very active this year. For the first time the band has elected officers: president, Thomas Cook: vice-president, Joseph Kennedyg treas- urer, Norman Gamble: secretaries, Sally Robie and Patricia Goss. The members of the band spent much 70 time, in and out of school, in preparation for their performances. Vlfherever it went, on the stage, foot- ball fielcl, or Boston Garden, the Beverly High School Band was a credit to its school. At the front of the band, the baton squad members entertain at football games and parades. These girls, who work hard and practice all summer, bring color to the bandis music and are a very important addition to these appearances. N. - ?' hx I T 2-f ' C' 5? For twenty years he was a dedicated teacher of patternmaking before he served as director of the Trade School for a period of seventeen years. Feeling that vocational edu- cation is essential to meet the needs of all youth. Mr. Patten devoted himself to that cause. Despite many setbacks. he met every crisis to make Beverly Trade School an effec- tive functioning organization. Throughout his career Mr. Patten has gained the respect of teachers and pupils alike who realize that their school has lost a fine leader. The directorship has been turned over to Mr. Joseph D. Brucci, former member of the Supervisory Staff of the Massachusetts Depart- ment of Education in the Field of Trade and Industrial Education for Boys. MR. CLAUDE PATFEN Because of Mr. Herseyls departure in February. the Senior Class was left without a father for the remaining half year. Having had much experience as a class advisor of the Class of 1961, Mr. Nathans stepped into the position of Class Father of 1962. For his expert and wise advice both in financial and social matters, the Class of 1962 ex- presses its deepest gratitude. MR.
