Each of us enjoys reading about his dad s exploits in high school or college or about his aunt's trip to Europe. But . . . . . . what of our sons and daughters, nieces and nephews? Will they be able to exclaim about our high school accomplishments? To make certain that they inay. Beverlega 1959 is presented as a scrapbook, a record of our high school days. We hope that each member of this year's graduating class and his descendents will find some personal and happy memories among the pages of this book. This year in the Spring a pilot course, given by the Council of Television and Humanities, will be tested on a junior English class. This program, sponsored by the Ford Foundation, will be given to approximately eighty schools in the Boston area. It is interesting to note that Miss Elizabeth Whalen, former BHS English Department Head, is one of the test consultants. Science and Mathematics We of Beverly High School can well be proud of our Mathematics and Science Departments. Special recognition goes to our Science Department, for B.H.S. was one of three schools in this area chosen to present a new experimental course in Physics this year. This course, developed at Massa- chusetts Institute of Technology, is an entirely new concept in the teaching of physics, complete with special laboratory experiments, and slide and motion picture films. 3, 1 V ., KQV yii AM., Wm 7 2 - B V , .- - . Led by our co-captains, John Ryan and Mike Tomeo, the Golden Warriors won eight games and tied one. The traditional Thanksgiving game with Salem proved to be a tremendous victory for our team. Mike Tomeo was again presented the MacLean Trophy this year for his splendid performance in the Salem game. Other high honors came when John Ryan and Mike Tomeo were singled out in the Boston papers as all-scholastic play- ers. Many other players received honorable mention. In December the entire first string of the football squad participated in the annual Harry Agganis Memorial game at Manning Bowl. John Ryan was the recipient of the Thom McAn Trophy. Our B squad had a prosperous season, winning seven games and losing one. FOOTBALL Congratulations to Head Coach Charlie Walsh and to his able assistants Charlie Pelonzi, Robert O'Neill, and Norman Rand. The gradual de- velopment of the team from the Haverhill game to the Salem game was the reward of their coaching. Congratulations, also, to the cheerleaders. The traditional Thanks- giving pep rally concluded with the hanging of the Salem witch. The rousing enthusiasm which they gave to the fans helped B.H.S.'s athletes fight on to victory. Congratulations to all concerned-to coaches and team-for a superb fighting spirit, for a fine example of outstanding sportsmanship and team play, for a really great season. Following a selection, Overture to Tannhauser, by the High School Orchestra, the audience enjoyed a talk entitled The Student Looks Ahead by Wfilbur Bender, Dean of Admission and Financial Aids at Harvard University. Then, following the Senior Chorus' rendition of One God, the Class were presented their diplomas and concluded the Graduation Exercises with their Class Song. CLASS SONG Though we leave Beverly High School and travel along Our separate paths of tomorrow, The memories we'll keep we now treasure in song And in knowledge eternally borrowed. New friends we shall make but the old will remain As reminders of days gladly spent, With our lessons, athletics, our dances and plays, Full of laughter and pure merriment. Wfe ourselves must decide what our future will be, And must never be led astray, For the hope of the world must depend on the young, Thus, tomorrow begins with us today.
