HIS EXCELLENCY THE MOST REVEREND JOSEPH M. MCSHEA, D.D. BISHOP OF ALLENTOWN On February 15, 1961 Archbishop Egidio Vagnozzi, Apostolic Delegate in the United States, announced the division of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, naming as the Allentown Diocese the counties of Berks, Carbon, Lehigh, Northampton, and Schuylkill. At the same time His Excellency named Most Rev- erend john J. McShea receives sincere congratulations from the faculty and students on his appointment as flrst Bishop of the Allentown Diocese. Born in Lattimer, Pennsylvania, Bishop McShea moved with his family to Philadelphia where he re- ceived his early education and entered St. Charles Seminary in 1923. Three years later he was sent to the Roman Pontihcal Seminary from which he received a Doctorate of Philosophy and a Doctorate of Sacred Theology. After ordination to the priesthood in Rome on December 6, 1931, Bishop McShea returned to St. Charles Seminary where he taught for three years. He returned to Rome in 1935 and served at the Vatican until his appointment as secretary to the Apostolic Delegate in Washington. On February 9, 1952, Bishop McShea was named Titular Bishop of Mina and Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia, and he was consecrated on March 19, 1952. Since the death of Cardinal O'Hara on August 28, 1960, Bishop McShea has served the Archdiocese as Administrator. To the first Bishop of Allentown his flock extends prayers and good wishes. Together with the members of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, students of Bethlehem Catholic High School mourned the loss of their beloved shepherd, Cardinal O'Hara, just before the opening of the current school year. In addition, because of his association with Notre Dame University for thirty years, as well as his duties in the United States Military Ordinariate, the death of this great prelate caused grief to many throughout the nation. In secular andireligious newspapers appeared sin- cere eulogies of Cardinal O'Hara with the mention of his many praiseworthy achievements. High among these was what he accomplished for the education of youth through his interest and inde- fatigable zeal. For this he will long be remembered by all who benefited substantially from the new buildings and equipment supplied for education, but more important, from the advice and guidance of this great spiritual leader. Among his many note- worthy statements two will be remembered for their inspiration: If it is a work of God, He will find llae way of pro viding for us the necessary means. Benjamin, D.D., newly appointed Auxiliary Bishops of Philadelphia, shown during the ceremonies of their episcopal consecration in the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul, Philadelphia, on December 22, 1960. To the left of Bishop Furey is Bishop joseph McShea, Administrator of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, and to the right of Bishop Benjamin is Bishop J. Carroll McCormick, of the Diocese of Altoona- Johnstown, Bishop McShea and Bishop McCormick were co-consecrators, and Archbishop Egidio Vagnozzi, Apostolic Delegate to the United States was the consecrating prelate.
