Q ft X N? , .- .. -- 1 ef .JON Together with the members of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, students of Bethlehem Catholic High School mourned the loss of their beloved shepherd, Cardinal O'Hara, just before the opening of the current school year. In addition, because of his association with Notre Dame University for thirty years, as well as his duties in the United States Military Ordinariate, the death of this great prelate caused grief to many throughout the nation. In secular andireligious newspapers appeared sin- cere eulogies of Cardinal O'Hara with the mention of his many praiseworthy achievements. High among these was what he accomplished for the education of youth through his interest and inde- fatigable zeal. For this he will long be remembered by all who benefited substantially from the new buildings and equipment supplied for education, but more important, from the advice and guidance of this great spiritual leader. Among his many note- worthy statements two will be remembered for their inspiration: If it is a work of God, He will find llae way of pro viding for us the necessary means. We have no problems, only opportunities. HIS EMINENCE, JOHN CARDINAL O'llARA. C.S.C.. D.D. May l, 1888 - August 28, 1960 Reqniexml in pace! Q HIS EXCELLENCY THE MOST REVEREND JOSEPH M. MCSHEA, D.D. Each student of Becahi receives an individual consideration from Father. He interests himself in a special way in the scholastic achievement of eachg he merits the trust of those who confide in himg he holds a high place in the esteem of the alumni who often return for advice and counsel. And most of all, the Graduates of 1961, who will soon be leaving their dearly beloved school, have fostered and devel- oped a friendship with their Principal, which will remain with them forever with the wonderful memories of Bethlehem Catholic High School. S iiti if THE REVEREND DANIEL B. POWELL, D.D. Reclor of Holy Infancy Parish V, Reverend Remigio Roldan worked among the Spanish-speaking people of Bethlehem for thirty- one years. State Championship challenged Bethlehem Catholics Golden Hawks throughout a spectacular 1960-61 season. Displaying Coach Calvo's excellent training, the Champs triumphed over their first five foes before Northampton beat them. Recovering, Becahi whipped Lansdale Catholic and their next three opponents, but lost to Bethlehem High. The Golden Hawks rallied their defenses and won the next six games, the most cherished triumph being their upset of Allentown Central. First half of season found Bethlehem Catholic holding the title with a 9-O Suburban League score and an over-all record of 15-2. Bishop Kenrick's Knights gave the defenders their nrst League loss to open the season's second half. Seven victories and two losses followed, bringing the league score to 15-3 and the seasonal over-all record to 22-5. Bethlehem Catholic Hawkettes profit through constant exercise and supervised practice, as they proved during this successful season. Wlith an overwhelming victory over St. Francis Academy, the girls' basketball team opened its league series and continued with determination to win. Under the skilled training of Coach DiMeglio, members of the team gained confidence and finesse. Thrilling the spectators with one point margins, the girls defeated each of their traditional foes, Liberty High School and Notre Dame early in the season. In the return game, however Liberty got its revenge by more than doubling Becahi's score, but Notre Dame bowed again with 29-26, Because of the number of undergraduates on the Varsity Team, the Hawkettes show great promise, and in the future they will demonstrate how well they benefited from their ex- periences. Sophomore year introduces two new subjectsg namely, biology and plane geometry. Biology students study the life processes and needs that are common in all organisms, as well as the interdependence ,of plants and animals. THE IlIlllIlSl Ill Alll TIIW ? 1 IN During their senior year the class of 1961 noted a most im- portant event in the growth of the Catholic Church-the erection of the Diocese of Allentown, As the first Bethlehem Catholic High School graduates in this new diocese take their places as young men and young women among the quarter of a million souls in Bishop McShea's flock, they go forth equipped with the glory of a Catholic education which will lead them to eternal life if they follow the principles and precepts they were taught. With this significant event the SCEPTRE supplement begins memorabilia that occurred too late to be included in the text of the 1961 SCEPTRE. During the enthronement rites in the Cathedral of St. Catharine of Siena, Allentown, April 11, 1961, Bishop joseph McShea, together with his chap- lains, Monsignor Scott A. Fasig and Monsignor Theodore C. Wagner, listens to the reading of the papal decrees announcing his appointment. From the hands of His Excellency, Archbishop Egidio Vagnozzi, Apostolic Delegate to the United States, His Excellency, Bishop joseph M. McShea receives the crosier, a symbol of his episcopal authority as the first Ordinary of the Diocese of Allentown. 1 4 ' 1 us- 53, .f A cccc 2 t s I ii if -3 ifkilf -, 'ei 'i gt? Although closely guarded by South Scranton defenders, Muggs McGee- han contributes two more points to Bethlehem Catholic's score which stood at 47-44 at the end of the game.
