At school, we tackle the pro- nunciation and spelling of foreign words. We know that to understand a people we must know their tongue, and so we drill on vocabularies, read short stories, give reci- tations, and take exams. We learn the history and culture behind the people and the language. After the first year, we gradually become accustomed to idioms and ir- regular verbs. In struggling through the second year, we wish we were still taking the first year. The third year consists of reading novels and plays.
