Bethel climbed to fifth in the state on the strength of an explosive offense and sporadic defense. Errors in the Warwick game brought the Bruins down from the clouds; even though Bethel outstatisticed the Raiders, mental errors cost them the game. The Bruins subsequently dropped three of their final four games including a most disappointing loss to our arch rivals. Senior standouts John Britt, Kenny Taylor, Vincent Grimes, Ernest Wright, Zackery Dortch, Jerry Bunn, Dexter Van Hook, David Farmer, Renard and Denard Lynch, Al¬ vin Jones, Darrell McNeil, Frankie Vann and Rodney Reid made significant contributions to a 6-4 season. Senior man¬ agers Valerie Addison, Michelle Allison, and Shiela Brown worked diligently. Greg Morris, a triple threat, will be missed because of the VHSL age rule. The Bethel Offense once again led the Peninsula District but the perennially strong defensive unit was plaqued by injuries and mental errors. It gave up more points this sea¬ son than the last 2 years combined. Making All District for Bethel were John Britt at LB, Kenny Taylor at defensive end, and Rodney Howard at running back. Rodney was also selected the Best Offensive Back in the District. Starting underclassmen were Terrill Britt, Michael Edwards, Creighton Incorminias, Demont Vann, Terry Vann, Carl Watts, Tom York, Miquel Incorminias, and Ray Ranson. The Junior Varsity record was 2-7. However all of our losses were under 10 points. Statistically Bethel offensively averaged 11 first downs, 218 yards rushing per game, 71 yards passing, and a 289 yards per game. The offense averaged 13.4 points per game. Defensively we gave up 9.7 points per game while holding our opponents to 7 first downs per game, 83 yards rushing, 78 yards passing and a 161 yards per game. 1983 FINAL RESULTS 17 Bethel GREEN RUN 14 7 Bethel PETERSBURG 6 21 Bethel LAFAYETTE 0 28 Bethel KECOUGHTAN 0 9 Bethel PHOEBUS 7 7 Bethel WARWICK 20 7 Bethel FERGUSON 17 28 Bethel MENCHVILLE 0 0 Bethel DENBIGH 6 0 Bethel HAMPTON 27 1983 JV FINAL RESULTS 21 Bethel PHOEBUS 0 21 Bethel WARWICK 14 0 Bethel FERGUSON 14 7 Bethel NORVIEW 8 8 Bethel MENCHVILLE 14 0 Bethel KEOUGHTAN 14 0 Bethel DENBIGH 21 0 Bethel LAFAYETTE 17 0 Bethel HAMPTON 21 96 YOUR WRIGHT, YOU GUYS DON ' T HAVE TO BEG JUST PLAY.” THE DEFENSE TAKES A WATER BREAK. With only nine players, one senior, four juniors, three sophomores, and one freshman coming out for the squad this year, many obstacles were forthcoming. But throughout all the misfortunes that confronted them, this squad grew closer and played harder each game with an unseemingly undying spirit to win. And win they did. This noble nine won the Fifth Fort Eustis Christmas Invitational Tournament, Girls Division. Senior Melissia Patterson was voted The Most Valuable Player of the Fort Eustis Tournament and also selected to the Fort Eustis Christmas Invitational All-Tournament Team. Their winning spirit did not stop with this championship. Taking one opponent at a time and all the many frustrations, practices and obstacles, this squad continued to win and succeed. By the end of the regular season, they had accumulated 19 wins and 2 losses which gave them the Co-Championship of the Peninsula District. Other honors were earned by members of this squad. At this writing, senior Melissia Patterson and sophomore Candice Tillman have been voted to the All Peninsula District Basketball Team, Girls ' Division. Melissia Patterson has achieved the prestigious 1,000 career point mark and is the district ' s leading female scorer with 220 points. The team wishes to pay tribute to all those students and Alumni who practice faithfully with them this sea¬ son. The Bruin Spirit” has been prevalent from the be¬ ginning of this season to end. Melissia takes it to the Hoop. Front row, Left to Right: Carolyn Gatling, Manager: Melissia Patterson, Sr. Captain; Jessie Pope, Head Coach; Tonya Savage, Jr. Captain; Joi Robinson, Manager.
