Text from Pages 1 - 196 of the 1986 volume:

A Time For Reflections Contents 4 School Days, School Days The 1985-86 school year, which began with an increased enrollment of 30, brought new students and new teachers to B.F.A. New friendships were renewed. Summer fun became a vague memory as unfamiliar subjects demanded total commitment to study. However, numerous activities offered welcome relief from hours of concentration. Mrs. Sanders 6 Special Notes To The School 9 Right Moves B.F.A. football brings excitement to each fall season, and the year 1985-86 was no exception. When players, parents, and students rallied around the new four-membered coaching staff, a spirited season followed. Victories fixed our enthusiasm, and losses stirred our determination. Parents gave support and encouragement to players who practiced long hours in the heat, rain, and cold. And most of all, the B.F.A. fans were always there cheering them on to victory. n Mrs. Sanders 12 13 Dedication 14 The 1985-1986 RFFLFCTIONS Staff would like to dedicate this years book to Mrs. Sharon Syx. She has taught choir at the Academy for six years. Mrs. Syx is responsible for starting the BFA singers. She represents the whole school when she takes the Choir out singing. During her spare time she enjoys working in her yard and getting a super tan while spending time at the river. We, the students and faculty, would like to thank Mrs. Syx for all her dedication to the school. We would also like to thank her for helping give our school the reputation it has. THANKS and we love you. :Donna Pitzing, Tim Horton History As we think back over the past, many of us remember our first grade year here. It is hard to believe that we are finally seniors. We will never forget our elementary years. We spent alot of time getting chips off our shoulders and looking at chocolate on the maps in Mrs. Lushingtons exciting social studies class. Mrs. Sullivan enjoyed keeping a well supply of Kleenex's for all the trips we made. Then came varsity with all our exciting football games with especially homecoming. Our tenth grade year was filled with spirit when we went to the state play-offs. We were all upset when we didn't win but were very pleased winning second place. Our tenth grade year will never be forgotten with alot of the girls getting initiated. Kappa and Sports Club became a vital part of our lives getting tapped in. Our junior year was rough for us, we all had a heavy load on our back. We were all very proud when we won first place in the homecoming backdrop. We worked very hard for the Miss B.F.A. and some of us will never forget decorating for the Prom and hanging the parachute. This year we have experienced a large change with our new arrivals from Berney Points. We are glad we made new friends. We are glad to have this opportunity and the memories we have will last a lifetime. Our last year is finally here. We have all matured over the years and now we are ready to face the world. We have many memories from this year we will carry with us forever. We will miss it when we are gone and we wish the class of eighty-seven the very best. Wendy Wesson Kevin Garmon Randy Moore Sandy Moore. Kevin Garmon Wendy Wesson 39 Prophecy We, the prophets of the Class of '86 welcome you to our ten-year reunion which is being held at |on Grayson's Country Club to meet a double purpose. )on has recently retired from the pro-golf circuit where he was able to live in luxury after making a few millions after achieving the ultimate fowl, a chicken farm. The reunion is one reason for this gathering, but everyone is very excited about the wedding which will finally take place. The wedding is to unite Angel Ethridge, former Miss World, and Lee Parker who was recently fired from the local Food World for smuggling cantaloupes. The couple was reunited at a Food World convention when they accidentally ran into one another in the frozen food section, and it became love at second sight. Serving as the minister for tonight's ceremony is Mike Suell who is running a bit late due to a wrcckless driving ticket obtained in his Porsche 944 which became available to him when he bought Earnest Angley's travelling crusade and made a rare fortune selling healing rags. In the corner we see Kathy Cooper discussing the marriage wirh Wendy Milstead. Kathy keeps saying over and over again, I don't know why she's marrying him, he doesn’t do a thing for me! Wendy keeps interrupting her with more information concerning her recent presidential campaign. The only problem that anyone can foresee is the fact that they will fall asleep before she quits going on and on and on Mark Newton, her bodyguard, had become a professional wrestler and is known in the ring as Mark the Mangier.†Chris Hoggle has now taken Tip O'Neill's position as Speaker of the House, although he is unable to be with us tonight because he was scheduled lor a speech. We look around the room to find D.W. Shelton, Steve Shepherd, Mark Bryant, and Scott Freeman playing Dungeons and Dragons. They stop for a moment to argue with our chaperone, Suzanne Freeman, about the King Arthur legends while artist, Stanley Ross is contradicting everything she says and saying to himself Who cares about this anyway. Our entertainment tonight is being provided by our very own Leigh Wesley singing the greatest hits from Pat Bcnatar Her backup vocals are Mandy Kelley, Judith Dabbs, Elizabeth Bond, and Lana Hartline who have recently returned from accompanying Leigh on their first World Tour. This was all possible because of her agent, J.D. Logan. The photographers suddenly leave Leigh in order to swarm Jill McDougal who has just arrived at the reunion. She has recently married a Greek Oil tycoon, is wearing one of her many chinchillas with diamond buttons and has arrived in her wedding present — a chaffeur driven Rolls Roycc with both doors engraved, in 24 karat gold, Queen B Our second act. the Chippendale dancers, has now arrived. The members include Jerry Culp, limbo Mahaffey, Dwayne Smith, Mike Tracy, and leader, Joseph Bubba Littleton. Callie Campbell, who is now arriving has truly made a suc cess of her life as a commercial actress for Dixie Datsun as D. Buffy. As we hear voices outside, the door opens and in walks a crowd. We find that NASA Space Center is now under the control of Lt. Commander Kenny Grimes and Kim White since they have always been in the ozone. Dr. Scott C. Pate, who has been practicing dentistry with his father, is teaching little Scotty the ropes of how to tackle running backs while his wife Michelle cannot he active because she is expecting again. The couple is, of course, accompanied by Mama Martha who is reminding Michelle to make his little lunch everyday |ust like mommy used to do. We see Paula Curl is receiving advice from Michelle about tips for a happy marriage because Hank Winks has recently popped the question. Stacey Harris has apparently become wealthy from her best-selling novel because she has bought the Pepsi-Cola Company and has given all of the truck drivers a big raise. Joey Reaves is now manager of the Jonesboro Food Town, and his extracurricular activity involves training mules. Two of his employees at Food Town 3re Richard Grimes who now has a diamond studded leash, and Kevin Garmon. Wro regret Kevin could not attend because he is working the graveyard shift again. We have just received word that Tim Horton cannot make it to our reunion due to the fact that he has had yet another wreck. Although Tim is uninjured, the other automobile, owned by Sharon Hewitt, is totaled. Sharon is very upset because it was recently awarded the title, World's Oldest Running Travel-All. Together as usual Darlene Odom, Chrisli Jordan and Lisa Hosmer are in the kitchen conspiring against Russia to steal their most recent nuclear weapons on their next mission They call themselves the Triple A-Team. As we follow a trail of glitter we find Sonny Maroney, conductor of the Boston Pops at the end. He is discussing his newest masterpiece with Cheryl Kirkpatrick his lead trombone player, whom we see still has her Siamese twin attachment. James. As we look around the room, we see Debbie Clements wearing a B.F.A. cheerlcading uniform. Rumor has it that she has quit college to become head of the Universal Cheerlcading Association and has had five nervous breakdowns. Sherry Allamel begins speaking of her dictatorship at the Birmingham News. She has just returned from Africa where she covered a starvation campaign Wendy Wesson and Renee Kennedy were co-rhairmon of this campaign. Wendy became interested in this in order to fulfill beauty contest responses. As Kenneth ''Bimbo Rushing enters, we notice that he looks exhausted. This is due to the fact that Renee chased him throughout Ethiopia while trying to feed him a rice mixture. Chuck McRee and Mark Smith are arriving late since Chuck has been in the parking lot for thirty minutes trying to derive an equation to perfectly park his cat. Mark is unaffected by the svhole situation as usual, and a smile still remains on his face. Randy Moore, Lee Musso, and Chris Cater are followed by six girls as they enter. They still believe that they are the only one's who have what all of the girls want; however, rumor has it that Randy was seen paying these girls before they entered. Yashica Patel is heard all over the room announcing the expansion of the Hiway Host into the Holiday Bowl. We arc very proud of her on this. Craig Byram has just entered, and he has his Government book under his arm in case Mrs. Robinson wanted to lecture tonight He also has his lunch with him which nobody touches for fear ot his life. Frank Junkyard Dog Sebert has recently been named the Head Honcho of the Brighton chapter of Hell Hounds. We are proud of Frank on this fine achievement. Behind he we see Joey Baker who was named Hound of the Month because of his ability to catch flies in his teeth while going 110 mph down 159. Karla Wise, Molly Walburn, Missy Garrett, and Leigh Snider are following behind them. They are their dates tonight since they are seen frequently visiting in the Hound Hole†because each wants to be awarded the golden bone for Princess Houndette. A% everyone begins to leave. Donna Pitzing, who has become world renown because of her famous Chilly recipe, walks in with Donna Middlebrooks who was late, as usual, since she insisted upon curising Hueytown which was on the way. As the reunion comes to a close, we, the Class of 1986 would like to express our sincere appreciation for all of the memories we have obtained during our years at Bessemer Faith Academy and a special thanks to our parents, teachers, and friends who have made our memories, thoughts to be cherished. We end on one final thought: Even though our paths may sever, our friends will always be with us in our hearts. Mark Smith till McDougal Mark Smith, J. McDougal Poem Days filled with happiness, times laced with tears. Memories of things that we've done Will remain with us always buries deep in our hearts As we face to the days yet to come. Dreams for the future dreampt from things in the past Hopes for the days yet to see As we look toward the future, move away from what's gone And prepare for the people we'll be. Memories who through the dark halls of time. Times we laughed, times we cried, friends who cared. We'll remember forever although time takes its toll We'll remember ... Years of youth we once shared. SANDS OF TIME 4 Juniors There is a special closeness that makes the juniors feel as if we are one big happy family. We have watched each other grow, we've shared our most personal secrets, and we are always there for each other in times of trouble. That special feeling among us holds an everlasting friendship that no one else would understand. We will always remember the great times we've had together especially the Trails of Terror . That was one memorable week, with all the hard work and the storm Thursday night. Thanks to everyone's hard work and cooperation, it was a rewarding experience. In the Friday pep rallies we were known for singing and reading books while everyone else was yelling. The juniors did other projects such as the Beauty Pagent, U.M.O.C. and the prom. Our friendships have grown into something very special. The friendships we've established are ours to keep and cherish forever. The times we share together are so much fun. Homecoming, Christmas parties and just plain get togethers are such great times. Many new people have joined our class this year. Many of us have spent the full 10 years together, but the ones of us that have not, cannot wait to spend the next two years with each other. The prom, banquets, and lead-outs are just waiting for us to get there. Ninth grade is very different from seventh and eighth grades. You are introduced to new things. You get to be involved with the Spanish Club and other things that you didn't get the opportunity to do in junior high. These things help you to be responsible and more mature. We don't have as many parties, or get to go as many places. But it is better because we can try-out for more things, like Cheerleading or Mat-mates. In Science we can work in the lab, but in elementary we couldn't. Junior High is fun, but when we get our of school it will probably be even better. His two daughters, Barri and jenny, also graduated from here. In his limited amount of spare time he avidly reads, fishes, researches the Civil War, and gives blood. Mr. Norton has done more for the school than anyone else I can think of right off the top of my head. He has done much to make this school one of the best in the area. Heavily, Mr. Norton is into school activities, and he would quickly do anything for the Rebels. Chris Denny The Miracle Worker The counselor at B.F.A. is none other than Mrs. Mary B. Sullivan. She's given us twelve of the best years of her life. Her hobbies are reading and cooking. Also, she likes to travel when she's not at work. Percy, her husband, is the family doctor. Her son Bill is a third year medical student. Those Ladies In The Office Mrs. Peggy Bryant, when she is not posing for pictures for the school photographer, is the official school registrar. After Bill swept her off her feet, Robin, Tina and Clay, her children, sprung up in the cabbage patch. She enjoys camping with her grandchildren. Who is the greatest bookkeeper the world has ever know? Mrs. Roberta Carter, that's who! She has been at B.F.A. for seven years. Her daughter Traci attends U.A.B. Mrs. Carter welcomes each new day with a smile, a chuckle, and occasionally, a guffaw. To top it off, the lady likes cats. We sincerely appreciate the loads of work these two ladies do for our school. Mrs. Ann Swanson dilates her pupils in biology, physical science, botany, human physiology, and annual staff. She has a special interest in her family: Dave, Carlye, Nikki, Buffy, and Scamper. Mrs. Suzanne Freeman brainwashes the 11th and 12th grade English classes. Ed is her husband, Heidi is her Basset hound, and many of her plants are African violets. She appreciates a good jar of Expresso Olive Con-dites when she can get one. Mrs. Janice Walls has a B.A. degree from the University of Montevallo and teaches 6th, 7th, and 10th grade English. She is the mother of two children, Lan-den and Maggie. Maxie is her husband. Miss Connie Colindres is the Spanish teacher at B.F.A. When she is not doing this, chances are she is traveling, cooking, playing tennis and collecting dolls. Dr. Alice Robinson has taught at B.F.A. for 11 years. She is married to Jean and has a son, Chris and a daughter, Lila. Rhett is their Boston terrier. When she is not globetrotting, she likes swimming, boating, golfing, gardening and wogging. Mrs. Barbara Pauly has a Siamese cat named Hannibal: he goes well with her two sons, Jonathan and Daniel, and her husband, Steve. She got her B.A. and M.Ed. at Montevallo and interprets U.S. History, World History, and English to her students. Mrs. Faye Bunn conducts study hall classes. She has been at B.F.A. for six years. Her children, Becky, Bonnie, and Cecil all graduated from here. The lady does a mean cross-stitch. Mrs. Mary Avant Redmond has been at B.F.A. for a year and a half. She spends her extra time working on the history of Lipscomb. Her family consists of her husband, two daughters, and grandchildren. Mrs. Peggy Horne graduated from the University of Montevallo. She teaches geometry, trigonometry, and Algebra II. She enjoys reading. She is married to Terry, has three children and a dog named Sally. Mrs. Gwen Carlyle instills calculus on weary seniors. She is also a volunteer fireman. Nice is from Sweden; Sabrina is not, Nick and Cocoa are from Labrador. 77 Mrs. Linda R. Maxwell instructs 10th, 11th, and 12th grade computer classes and an 8th grade enrichment class. She has an Associate Degree in Data Processing from Bessemer State Technical College. Her hobbies are reading and sewing. Mr. David Curren has a B.M.E. from the University of Monte-vallo. This is his third year at B.F.A. as band director. He enjoys music and plays in as many musical groups as possible. Mrs. Annis Cammack teaches Typing I and II, Accounting and Business Math. Her husband, Jack is heavily involved in Auburn tootball and they have a son, Casey, and a daughter Laura. Mrs. Sue P. Moore prepares the minds of the kindergarteners. She attended the University of Alabama. She collects bells and enjoys working in her yard. Her son, Bert, is also a student at B.F.A. Mrs. Margaret Elm has an A.B. degree from the University of Southern California and an M.A. and A.A. from the University of Alabama. She teaches first grade. Sewing, reading, and gardening are among her favorite things to do. Mrs. Avonell S. Watson can be seen daily sharpening the minds of the 2nd and 3rd graders. She oil paints and reads for enjoyment. Her husband is Harold. Mrs. Louise Tommie teaches 3rd grade English, reading, social studies, and science with a little 4th grade social studies on the side. From the University of Alabama, she has a B.A. degree which she has put to good use here for three years. She enjoys bird watching. Mrs. Lon D. Holmes hobbies include water and snow skiing, cross stitching, decorating, and teaching baton. In her spare time she leaches 4th and 5th grade math. She's got a B.A degree from U.A.B Ginger is her dog. and Bill is her husband. Mrs. Gloria ' Patsy Lushington has been at B.F.A. for 16 years. Wow!! She is constantly expounding reading and science into her 5th and 6th graders. Oddly enough, she has a Bear who resembles a cocker spaniel. 78 Mr. Tommy Harris is married to Annette. He has two children, Kristen and Alan. He has a B.S. degree in Physical Education from Samford University. Often, he can be seen fishing, hunting, and playing softball. 80 Glenda's Continental Cuisine Here at Bessemer Faith Academy we are fortunate to have a good luncheon staff. The students here would be unable to survive the school day without nourishment, and a break from the old routine. Not only does the lunchroom serve food, it also serves good fun. Most of the students enjoy the lunchroom because of the comedy. Most of the ladies in the lunchroom have been with the academy for eight or more years. But this 85-86 year we have added a new member, Mrs. Sandy Tate. I wouldn't want to forget the other ladies: Mrs. Judy Having, Mrs. Ann Tracy and Mrs. Glenda Williams, the manager. This group works very hard in order to try and make each edition a little bit better than the last. It takes a great deal of leadership, patience, and commitment to be a member but the rewards are much greater than all the pain and hard work. Even though the job never seems to be finished we always take a few minutes to sit back and take a look at what we have accomplished. Our greatest satisfaction is found in a job well done. Kappa Tri-Hi-Y is a Christian organization designed for the high school girls here at B.F.A. The main function of Kappa is to engage in projects that prove serviceable for the school as well as the community. Kappa starts off the school year early with a few rush parties in the summer. These are held so the girls who wish to be in Kappa can see what it's all about. The school year begins with initiation and Tap-In. The Kappa Lead- Out is a big event held around January. Finally, as the school year comes to an end, the Kappa Banquet takes place. Kim White 89 We The Students 1. 10th grade: Andrea Thomas, Mark Foster, Lewis Russell, lack Cason. The band had taken itself from summer band practice to something noticed by many in its attempt for excellence. The band, under the direction of David E. With these rookie students and its other members, there were many steps taken to make the Rebel Band the quality performance organization it is known for. Kathy has been at this school for four years and greatly loved by everyone. Her smiling face and charming personality has captured the hearts of everyone. Her absence will be greatly felt when she graduates. Congratulations, Kathy! We love you. Wendy Hodges and DeAnn Farr 103 A Halloween Homecoming This years Homecoming was the best ever. The Bonfire was rained out, but it didn't stop the fireworks, carnival, and haunted house. Each class was responsible for a certain part in the carnival. The Sophomore class won best wall sign , and the Junior class won best door sign. Activities kept us busy all week and we were all rewarded Friday with the football team leading us to a mighty victory. Sherrie Roy 104 SANDS OF TIME The 1985 Football campaign at Bessemer Faith brought a changing of the guard. Four new coaches were hired in August to lead the team through the long hard season. Head Coach Bruce Breland came from our heated rival Coosa Valley, along with his top aide Bogie Wood. Allen Rawson, Sports Director at the Bessemer Y , got back into coaching after a short absence. Tommy Harris joined the staff, after serving at Berney Points for several years. Learning a totally new system the Rebels fought to 5-5 season record. Even though the record does not show it, the team improved immensely from week to week and was one of the hardest hitting teams in the state. Many thanks must go to the 16 seniors who displayed heart, character and leadership throughout their final season. Although caught in transition they cast the dye for Rebel teams of the future. Any success future BFA squads achieve, they must thank these seniors for the foundation they layed. Put It On The Line 108 No Pain, No Gain Homecoming was a very busy time at B.F.A. The sweet victory over Shelby was only a climax to a very exciting week. The student body was truly athletic supporters all week, getting the team pumped up for the big game. Since Shelby had defeated us in a practice game in August this game was especially important to the team and coaches. After completely shutting the Raiders offence down in the second half, the B.F.A. Rebels lay claim to a victory that was as sweet as any victory they would taste all year. 112 Varsity Football Coaches: Jerri Wood; Bruce Breland; Allen Rawson Flankers: 1st row: Steve Miller; Chris Hoggle; Ronnie Lowery; 2nd row Benny Quinn; Lee Musso; J.D. Through the years we have begun to know each other and have become closer. We started off wondering how much we were going to accomplish and we always shoot for the top! This year we were really proud because we made it to the finals in every catagory in which wo participated. The week of camp was miserble, but the rewards that we had to show were awesome. We can say, and we think we can speak for the entire squad that camp was quite worth our while this year. This year we have really become close to the football team and coaches! Thanks to our guys and coaches this has been the best year of all. We’re really going to miss c hecring next year because cheering has become a very important and special part of our lives. We know at times we were not always as close as we could have been, but overall we had so many great times that really brought us closer together. We will always love everyone of you because of the special times that we have shared together. We are really going to miss all of you next year. Thanks for an extra special Senior year. But the results of everyone's work made the time and effort put forth, worth it all. Everyone's help was greatly appreciated. A special thanks to our sponsor, Mrs. Ann Swanson, for her never-ending ideas. We would also like to thank Josten's American Yearbook Company for the help they have given us at ail times. We would like to thank the Annual Staff for making this year unforgettable. We know that a tremendous amount of work was put into the annual. At times we both seemed rigid and uncompromising, but the deadlines did not stop for us either. We are both very proud to have been associated with this publication. Sherry Allomel Brent Shadril —Â
