Hard Work 2 Pays Off! Contents Seniors 17 Classes 43 Faculty 66 Clubs 73 Sports 96 Finance 131 3 Starting The The Elementary Is probably one of the most overlooked of the sections at school. The kids are probably one of the greatest bunch. They go to Children's Theatre every year and sometimes to the zoo. This section is the future of Bessemer Faith Academy, the future doctors, lawyers, and maybe even a future president sits among these children now. Dreams and hopes are what makes these kids responsible for their outlook on life. The fun of youth and innocence are among them and every smiling face brings joy to us and them. Mary Veitch Year Off Fresh! Just What Did 6 You Do This Summer? 7 It's Our r Turn Now! As the Senior class of 1985 approaches the end, we feel sentiments of happiness and sadness. The joy of finally graduating, hopefully, is side stepped by the fact that we are leaving such great memories behind us. This year means so much, and yet, we cannot believe that we are graduating. We have had some great times in the past and look forward to making this year the best one in our lives. We have all grown up together and have grown close together. Memories can sometimes be the cruelest of all emotions and we hope the ones we leave behind are ones of happy times when young girls and boys matured into well-mannered ladies and gentlemen. We all have great burdens to bear in life and ours are to be what is expected of us and make our school proud that they produced such fine and educated people. Take A Look 10 At Me Now! n 13 14 Everyone Is Hard At Work 15 You Are The Greatest! The 1984-1985 Reflections' staff would like to dedicate this annual to Mrs. Avonell Watson. She has taught the second grade at Bessemer Faith Academy for eight years. She is admired for her dedication to her work at the school. Among her many talents, she is an accomplished artist. She has also taught Aerobics at the YMCA. In her spare time, she enjoys working with flowers and crosstitching. On behalf of the faculty and the students of BFA, the Reflections' staff would like to thank Mrs. Watson for her contributions to the Academy. 16 18 -■ Sec. There are some things we still hold near. Like our friends we have made along the way. We have all tried to grow up fast, And now our parents wish to live in the past. But, the future beholds us as we walk down the aisle, Now no one can hide their smile. The tears and joys, we have all shared together Even through the most bizarre of weather. The bond can never be broken, For it is a chain tied by the depth of the soul. The dreams we all held so dear, Have lasted on through all the tears. They will always be with us in soul and heart, As we take a small step forward For a brand new start. Mary Veitch Class .History We, the graduating class of 1985, do gratefully acknowledge the fact that our final year of high school is over. Having survived long years of homework assignments, lectures, and endless chemistry exams, we realize that no Senior class would be complete without a recorded history. Let this record of our enlightening adventures into academia stand forever more. In the beginning, there was the first grade. The building seemed so large, changing a simple trek to the restroom into a mind-boggling quest. After learning our way around, we embarked on our first theatrical experience a Thanksgiving extravaganza. As we moved up the ladder of academic achievement, we experienced the new trauma of changing classes, wondering which bell was for us. After memorizing the axiom crude, rude, and socially unacceptable, we moved to the other end of the hall. Our biggest shock came from a notorious mathematician who taught us to PLUG IT IN AND GRIND IT OUT. We also learned of the math students most hated enemy, the dreaded overhead projector. In high school, we thought we'd never survive Shakespeare wondering how anyone who talked so strangely could be successful. As mature juniors we saw our football team place second in the state, the best record ever. The Miss B.F.A. Pageant and Prom brought us, as a class, closer together. Who can ever forget the 450 helium balloons at the Prom? Again, as Algebra II students we heard our Wise Mathematic teacher's favorite phrase. Our Senior year finally arrived, bringing with it a new way to pronounce ten, pen, and beggar. Pictures, invitations, and banquets took large chunks out of our parent's bank accounts. We will always remember the eventful trip to the Botanical Gardens with Rip Hogue in the bushes. Looking back, we now see that it was these seemingly unimportant events that make us become attached to our school. Because of this leaving is a very confusing and a sad time. We will always remember our many friends and fun years at Bessemer Faith Academy. We only hope next year's Seniors will be as well prepared for the future as we have been. To: All of our friends, the faculty and your bravery, the Class of ''85 leaves j big thanks and lots of love to carry onlll Ree Reeves Kip Hogue Class Prophecy We, the prophets of the Class of '85, welcome you to our ten-year reunion. Surprisingly enough, our reunion tonight is not being held at Stacy Edge's house but at BFA's own gymnasium. The music tonight is being provided by Micah Hart and Michael Lipscomb who are now an opening act for Pink Floyd . Singing back up are Tima Elmore, Susan Holly, Barbie Sinn, Kim Foster and Michele Deavours. We are sorry that Jessica Tire Slasher Broadwater could not be with us tonight. She still has ten years left in the state penitentiary. Another one that could not be with us is Mary Shakespeare Veitch. She is now living in London doing very well with her plays and poetry. Some others that could not be with us are Maria Schilleciand Pam Patterson, they are playing basketball for the Lady Blazers, and they're on the road. A big thanks is to be given to David Pearson because if it wasn't for him none of us would be here. The bus broke down once again. We should also thank Shawn Riley for the beverages. She furnished them from her newly owned jiffy Chek located in Hueytown. Now enetering is Cami Snow White Roe followed by the seven dwarfs: David, Scott, Pat, Mike, Tim, Slick, and Hank. Among us tonight is our very own Jeff Mad Dog Lowery who has just returned from Atlanta after winning the Georgia Championship Wrestling Tournament. As we look around the room, we see Kip Hogue and Curry Howard talking to Roger Turley, Rodney Turley, Craig Roy, Greg Bullock, and Debbie Collins about their new co-owned mule farm on the outskirts of Dallas, Texas. Not far behind Debbie is Bobby Keer still trying to get a job on this farm. Here comes Scott Russell and Linda Speakman talking to Michelle Kirkpatrick and Scott Pate. Everyone is still asking the great question, Are they ever going to separate? Wait! Hold everything look who's coming through the door the ever popular She-Devils of Harlem. The members are Sheryl Cooley, Melanie Odom, Melanie Honeycutt, Terrie Howell, and Vicki McCombs. The leaders of this terrible gang are Wendy Horton and Jayna Lagrone. Across the room we see Kelly Hester telling Beth Cason and Ree Reeves how bad she still wants her 450 Mercedes. Beth and Ree are trying to sell to everyone their new toothpaste called Pullapin Ahhh. We all are very proud of Chuck Hand. We just found out that Chuck is the owner of the largest plantation in Columbia, South America. He is followed by his faithful sharecroppers: Eric Callaway, Jeff Dennis, Mark Clark, and Dale Norred. Over the roar of the crowd, we hear someone cheering and yelling. It's Charlotte Higginbotham. Because of her infatuation with joey jones, she has become a Birmingham Philly. Arriving fashionably late are Cindy Thrasher and Sonya Cossey, talking about Cindy's ever popular shoe collection. As this evening comes to a close, we, the Class of 1985 would like to thank our parents, friends, and faculty for making our time here at Bessemer Faith Academy enjoyable and memorable. This year we have a great deal of challenges. Algebra II and Trigonometry with Miss Carper, English with Mrs. Freeman and Chemistry II with Mr. Rogers are just a few, not to mention decisions for our future. With a little luck, a lot of help and a GREAT deal of determination, we will make it. Wendy Milstead Junior Favorites Jill McDougal, Mark Smith 45 46 Moving On Up . . . The sophomores went all out this year to show their school spirit. They made the great accomplishment of winning the spirit stick for Homecoming week. Even though subjects have become more difficult this year for the sophomores, besides studying, they have made their year a fun one. Sophomores will live up to their motto all through their high school years, the class with class. We can, for the first time, join clubs, try out for cheerleader and majorette. We can participate in school sports and pep rallies. Also it really gets fun around Homecoming because we can compete in things like wall and door signs and we are also eligible to be picked for the Homecoming court. Most important, Junior High is years spent starting on preparing ourselves for High School and for the future. We can begin selecting some of the subjects we would like to take and begin working on our future careers. In the spring a blood drive is held in cooperation with the Red Cross. The S.G.A. functions in many ways within the school. They sponsor the Rebel Rouser and homecoming dance, with proceeds from the magazine subscription sales. The Little Miss B.F.A. Pageant for elementary girls is also made possible by their hard work. The student government is very beneficial to the representatives. It functions as the government of the school giving each student the opportunity to participate in a small democracy. It is hard work but the honor and prestige make the results very rewarding. They sing for many senior citizens groups and civi-tan clubs. During Christmas, their busiest time, they can be found singing at Western Hills Mall and many other places. With the addition of choreography, they can turn big pop hits into solid gold smashes. Many found this true at the Rebel Rouser this year. This group is truly Star Search material. Jessica Broadwater 80 Music In Them! B.F.A. Singers B.F.A. Marching Rebel Band Curren Band began this year, as it always does, in the summer. Many hot afternoons were spent in preparation for the football season. Although it seemed impossible, the Bessemer Faith Academy Marching Band was ready at summer's end. During football season, this group's job was to cheer for the football team and to entertain during halftime. The games seemed long, as if they would never end, but soon they were over. After football season came concert season. The band gave a few performances and received good marks at competition. The seniors that leave know that those who replace them will do a good job. Soon after Christmas holidays, Kappa Lead Out is held. Finally, at the end of the year, the Kappa Banquet is held. At the banquet the pledges become actual members and the seniors have to say goodbye. Christie Jordon In Math Club It All Adds Up The main purpose of the Math Club is to attend math competitions. In order to prepare for these competitions, team members must meet long hours going over old math tests. To get more experience, they go over several new types of problems. Being in Math Club is rewarding, because one has the ability to learn more about something that interests them. 86 Key Club Opens It All The Key Club is a community service organization sponsored by the Bessemer Kiwanis Club. It has certain duties and responsibilities just as other clubs do. We devote most of our time to keeping the school grounds clean and helping the Boy's Ranch. Sock Hops are also sponsored by the Key Club in order to raise money so that we can help other organizations. The Key Club tries to make each member feel important in all activities, which is what this club is all about. Mark Smith Friendship, Fellowship And Service Teens for Christ is an organization that promotes Christian fellowship anti is committed to glorifying Jesus Christ! We are developing an Adopt-A-Grandparent Program in which we choose people in nursing homes to visit during the holidays. Our main purpose in Teens For Christ, through fellowship, Bible studies, and projects is to accomplish this goal. Everyone was yelling as we marched to the gym to cheer the football players to their victory. 90 Showin' Their Stuff! The Rebel football team played it's best game to date against Coosa Valley. The spirit of the crowd was going strong through-out the game. You could feel all of the excitement that had been accumulating during the week. Thanks to everyone we were rewarded with a wonderful victory. 91 Following A Dream The most unforgettable moment of the whole week was when Stacy Edge was crowned Homecoming Queen. Nothing can compare to the excitement and joy on her face. The Homecoming dance followed the game with entertainment by Ruckus . The leadout began at 11:00 with the Queen in the spotlight. We set out in July to go undefeated and win slate. We knew it would require long and hard hours of continuous practice which sometimes lasted four to five hours a day. After three big wins at the beginning of the season, we felt we were on our way. Disaster soon struck which resulted in the loss of three games. Because of our dedication, hard work, and team work, we still feel we have one of the best teams in the state. Fired up players, game planned coaches, and excited and loud crowds were the scenes seen at our football games. With the cheers led by our cheerleaders, the Rebel fans made many exciting and lasting memories at these games. We congratulate our coaches, Loggins, Crowson, and Samford, with their outstanding leadership which led our Rebels to victorious games. Our Rebel team showed many fantastic plays led by our quarterback, Craig Roy, and many other important players. Strategy and even luck played an important role this year for the football players which, of course, resulted in a winning season for the Rebels. This year we had a lot of new players. This year turned out to be a very good year for us. We had new coach, which took a little getting use to. Although the year started off pretty shaky, we improved greatly. The greatest improvement was our man to man defense, which took a tremendous amount of team work to make it happen. Out To The Ballgame Softball 1984 was one of the best years ever for softball in the history of Bessemer Faith Academy. The team consisted of 20 dedicated girls who fought hard to earn the District 7 championship. They achieved a 12-4 record in regular season play, losing only to West End. The highlight of the year was the State Playoffs in which Bessemer Faith was included. The first day of playoffs, the Rebels fell to West End, but later in the day defeated Shelby to earn another day in Montgomery. It was a very determined Ashford squad that the Rebels were forced to contend with. Ashford defeated Bessemer 4-3 and Bessemer headed back home with their heads held high. The team was coached by Mr. Thomas Bub Williams and Jeff Dennis. Pam Patterson was voted as Most Valuable Player. Cheryl Prickett was voted to play on All State Team. Jayna Lagrone, Cheryl Prickett, Pam Patterson and Maria Schilleci were chosen as All District Players. Jeff Dennis ns BFA Wrestlers With a lot of hard work and sweat our wrestlers again for the third consecutive year came on top and brought home the 1 trophy for the State Champions for the 2A division. We've worked real hard all year but we've also had alot of fun. Thanks for making my senior year so special. I'm sure going to miss you guys! I Love You Stacy 1M Editor's Note Being editor of the Annual Staff has been a great experience for me. It was very rewarding, along with being very hard work. The deadlines arrived very often, sometimes too often. The results of one's work is worth it all. I appreciate everyone's help. A special thanks to the teacher's for putting up with everything. I would also like to thank Mrs. Ann Swanson for being our sponsor again this year. I would like to thank the Annual Staff for making this year unforgettable. I know that a tremendous amount of work was put into the annual. I would also like to thank Josten's American Yearbook Company for all of the help they have given us at all times. To the editor and Annual Staff of next year, I would like to leave a large amount of patience and good luck! Colophon Josten's American Yearbook Company is responsible for the printing of Volume 15 of Reflections. Mr. Steve Wald was our sales representative. Our in plant consultant was Valerie Allison. Our yearbook was printed on gloss 191 paper under the Custom program. The dimensions of the book are 7 x 10 Vfr . The book contains 168 pages, which include two, four page tip-ins and eight autograph pages. The color pages include the senior individual pictures, four opening pages, and the tip-ins. The type style comes from the Optima family. Body copy was set in 10 pt., while all picture identification was in 8 pt. Headlines were set in 30 pt. Design — The division pages were designed by an in-plant artist. They are blue number 347. The cover was designed by Josten's and it is Flame Red. The layout designs are basically mosaic, with a one pica margin between items. Photography — Six staff photographers took the pictures for the annual. The pictures were printed by our own darkroom staff and Belmont Studios, Inc. 167 The Reflections has a press run of 295 copies. Summertime Extras The summer of 1985 is an exciting one. The students get out of school and look forward to summer plans. Although school is out, the fun did not end, it just began. Summer school begins in 2 weeks with Mrs. Carper and Mr. Rogers, while other activities continued such as band and football practice, cheerleading camp, and summer vacation. Sharon Vanoy Major League It was a great year for the baseball team. The districts were changed this year, but that didn't phase them. They had only one defeat during the season and were first place in their district. The team made it to the State playoffs, but were defeated. Making all-district were Craig Roy, Kip Hogue, Greg Bullock, Chuck McRee, and Scott Pate. Participating in the All-State game were Craig Roy, Kip Hogue, and Greg Bullock. Sherrie Roy Major League-ettes The girls softball team had a tough year. Though the team was good, the districts were changed and the competition was much tougher. The girls worked hard everyday after school and also during spring break. Most of the games were won, but they ran into a few rough spots. Making all-district were Jayna Lagrone, Pam Patterson and Sherrie Roy. Jayna La-grone and Pam Patterson also participated in the All-State game. Sherrie Roy Here She Is . . . This years prom was A Magical Night and A night to remember. Sherry Allamel A Magical Night Bike Rodeo This past year was a record breaking event in the bike rodeo. Both Randy Johns and Ricky Addington scored a perfect 100 in both the riding and written tests. That was the first time in eleven years this happened, one police officer said. Ricky and Randy had a ''Bike-off for the right to represent B.F.A. at City Hall. Randy was the victor. He went on to win the $50 first place prize at City Hall. The police department was so impressed that they also awarded Ricky consolation prizes for his awesome performance. J. Kierce Class day is one of the most important and exciting days of the school year. The Student Body, especially the Juniors, are looking forward to the days events while the Seniors dread their final day at High School. As the procession begins everyone realizes that these students are no longer silly and childish but have become mature adults. On this day all their achievements are recognized with awards such as Valedictorian, Salutatorian, Athletic and Music awards. Leigh Ann Wesley And The Winner Is . . . As warm weather approaches so does Awards Day. This is the day when grades Kindergarten through Twelve are awarded for their outstanding academic achievements in Art, English, Citizenship and Music.
