REFLECTIONS Bessemer A cademy ir -' “T CONTENTS Faculty Classes Organizations Activities A thletics Seniors Favorites Advertisements 2 REFLECTIONS Editorial Staff 3 DEDICATION The qualities of leadership are hard to define. To some a leader is a guide who directs and shows them the way. To others, it means the one who sets the examples and standards. For others, it means a commander who gives the orders and expects obedience. Still, some see a leader as the one who gets the glory when everything goes well, but accepts the blame when failures do occur. A good leader is a c o m b i n a t i o n of all of these. Bessemer Academy’s leader is our headmaster, Mr. Norton. He has been a guiding hand in the building of our school. We have grown from a little over 100 students and a faculty of 6 to 620 students with a faculty and staff of 27. We have moved from a temporary building to a new, permanent one. Mr. Norton requires hard work and instills in us the desire to do our best, because this is what he gives. He is stern at times, but always with just cause, and we arc all the better for it. If we fail in any way, he feels that he has personally failed us. Because of such understanding and warmth, we wish to say thank you by dedicating this, the 1974 REFLECTIONS, to 4 Mr. George Barry Norton. 5 Bessemer Academy Barry Norton, Headmaster Mary Sullivan Barri Montgomery Nancy Smithson Judy George Polly Vickers Helen Peoples Gloria Lushington Sara Winefordner Lola Whittington 7 Mike Worrell Kathy White James Lucas Judy Segars Henry Chandler Katherine Buck Joan Curl Roger Roberson June Garner Janice Cox John Perdue Ann Harrison Ida Jo Price Diane Green Barbara Bailey Joy Tew Peggy Bryant Marlene Ousley 9 10 Faculty Directory MRS. We will site the 1974 graduates as they enter BA’s colosseum. Now as our first alumni enters, we see that it is our photographer, Peggy Sue Hawkins, accompanied by Ms. Jean Woods. Susie and Jean are now the proud owners of a charm school, specializing in how to sit on chairs, porches, patios, etc. Working with them wc find Carol Johnson, who aids the girls in developing a more graceful walk. Immediately following are Diane Stewart and Vicki Cruse returning from their fifteenth attempt at passing the ACT this month. Hopefully, within this century, they will be attending a school of nursing. To support herself, Vicki is now a gossip columnist for THE DAILEY NEWS bylined Loose Lips Cruse. Mingling among the new arrivals we find Doris Armstrong and Denice Grimes. Due to certain reoccuring circumstances, they now own a Stork Shoppce. Unfortunately Christy Dennis could not join with them in this endeavor, as she is entering the Talladega 500 this Sunday. Wc arc extremely honored by the presence of a great opera star, Melia Brown. Barry Davis, United States Presidential candidate and his campaign manager, the alias wolfman, Benny Hester, are with her. Over on the far side of the room we spot DeWayne Cox. the famed author of THE CARE AND UPKEEP OF A LOVE BUG, conversing with magazine columnist, Amy C3sey, who wrote an outstanding article on comparative anatomy entitled Bubble Baths with Burt and Rambling with Redford. Kay Rogers, owner of the world's largest diamond collection, is talking with world renowned playboy, Steve McBride, and Mr. Joe Namath II, alias Mike Bradford. A loud voice is heard from across the room. It seems obvious that Rita Tichcy, roller derby champion, has arrived. She lias joined in the conversation between Alan Moore and Molly Dockery. Alan, a man of all sports, has achieved world fame for competing in the world’s first hobby horse race. Molly, an all time great horse lover, will be riding in the Kentucky Derby. Many of Bessemer Academy's alumni are now in the business world. Bill Hood lias made a name for himself in the world of fashion. His hairstyles arc a real revolution (or set-back!) for the men (?) of today. Judy Grammar is president of a Tic and Dye Company. Robyn Phillips owns and operates the You Grow It, We Mow It beauty salon. Kay Clifton is in charge of viewing and selecting models for the centerfold of Cosmopolitan, of which Claude Clark recently posed. Last, but not least, in our expanding world of business is Terry Gray. Terry owns a firm which manufactures paper airplanes. We are glad to have Terri Ward with us tonight. She has recently been discharged from the hospital, where she suffered numerous emergencies. Sherri Ward sends her regrets that she could not be with us tonight. Rumors arc that Sherri is being held by authorities, without bail, for assault with attempted murder of one Terri Ward. Let us thank Bill Franklin for saving Terri from this terrible fate. Could this be the budding of a new romance ?!? We have been asked to announce the opening of a new ballet, Stomping through the Tulips, Steven Terrell McBride Richard Alan Moore Rita Faye Richey Sharon Kay Rogers Diane Marie Stewart 90 Sherri Ward Terri Ward Cecelia Jean Woods Nor Pictured: 91 Andrew Berryhill Terry Lee Gray Sharon Lynn Higdon James McClanahan Steve Alan Parker Robyn Ann Phillips starring James McClanahan and Drew Berryhill. Finally, Meleah Keller has arrived pushing the car she had fixed at Bill Franklin's garage. Last of all enters Candy Cantrell complaining, “But, I couldn't get into the bathroom! Ah well, just another one of life's misfortunes, Candy. Just a bit of top secret information now: Our next reunion will be held in the newly completed (we hope!) 1994 Bessemer Academy (big BA) Astrodome. This will be located just across the way from Norton’s Nursery - a wonderful place which cares for all of the 1974 teachers who, by this time have regressed into their second childhood. For all that we are, and all that we have become, we pay tribute to Bessemer Academy. Or better yet, what might we give For someone else to keep? We travel the road of life once -There is no turning back. We are given no second try. Time is something that we cannot reverse. We are time. What might we leave? We might leave our best. What might we give? We might give our best. But our best is yet to come. Soon, wc learned how to write our names instead of printing them. This was the time when being sent to the office was a nightmare and play period was our favorite time of day. Then the years passed by, and we were on our way to Junior High. We discovered the opposite sex and, to our sadness, those little bumps ' on our faces. Wc had our first glimpse of pep rallies, football games, and parties. In the wink of an eye, we were in high school. We started out as dumb little freshmen who could not do anything right. Soon, we were sophomores with more experience and a chance to get involved. As fate planned it, our schools were tom up and we came together to form the Junior Class of Bessemer Academy. Wc had to make new friends and together form a whole new class, not just parts of other schools. It was a tough thing for us to do. Today wc have made it, we have become the first Senior Class of Bessemer Academy. We have had happy times as well as sad times. We leave this school and all our memories behind, but we take with us knowledge and friendships to last us a lifetime. Say Mike, You don't think Mr. Norton will notice that we lost the team, do you? Well, that's all there was left after the game. The Littlest Angel 102 103 Freshman Favorites Rod Tressillian Dawn Reeves Sophomore Favorites Robin Parsons Julie Griffin 104 1 sure wish they hadn’t told us about the plumbing just now! Now, let's see. You put the pencil in, then you turn the little crank like so and . . . •V 49-G, I wonder why the coaches are running like that? Like I was saying, there ARE ways to defy the law of gravity. 106 This child needs YOUR help. Gee. I wonder why Miss Harrison told me not to drink that? You're right Rusty. I think it is alive. Now quit fooling around Rusty, and come out. 1 am TOO much! 107 Everyone associated with Bessemer Academy would like to thank Miss Mary Hamilton for her many hours of work in our library. Without her guidance and help, the library would not have been ready to open this year. Miss Hamilton retired from Lanier High School in 1971, where she was librarian for most of the parents of the Bessemer Academy students today. Our students are her grandchildren she says. As long as we have the concern of people like Miss Hamilton, our school is destined to make great progress. 109 CHARLIE CAMPBELL, Manager 428-6314 3430 Bessemer Super Highway Bessemer.
