Efforts like LIVEAID and FARM- AID became more than entertainment on MTV. It was the collective ef- forts of the rich, the famous, the poor, the concerned growing together in the spirit of caring for others. While socializing with friends at Hoover Square or 2001, it is not easy to imagine a catastrophe like the Mexican earthquake or starvation in Africa. Many of us can ' t envi- sion such turmoil. Our view of the world is shaped by our own ex- periences — our laughter, our tears, our hopes, our dreams. As we attempt to make the world a better place, we strive to attain the universal al of all mankind --- World peace and happiness. ?««MU; sportsmanship As individuals, we each possess We contribute to our world - • tL . l - 5- .. ■fc ' ■' ■-■. m kl 11. To receive the dedicatior an honor, one taken seriously by Caravel members when voting. Even though Berry is great becai of many people, Mrs. Pritchett and Mrs. Ray have endeared themselves to the students and facul They are an integral part of the typical day at school and provide support for the strong acader program. Jo Ann Pritchett J| Our principal for 8 years, Mrs. Pritchett, was educated at Birmingham Southern and the University of Montevallo. She holds the AB, M.Ed., and AA degrees and has received many awards for her achievements including The Lawrence L. Malone Outstanding Principal Award, selec- tion as one of two principals in the country to serve on the National Commission on Professional Standards for the Principalship, and selection as the State Representative for the National Association of Secondary School Principals. From student to teacher to top administrator, Mrs. Pritchett is the epitome of pride — pride not only in our school but also in our community. Working with community leaders, parents, teachers, and students, she strives to promote a favorable environment for learning and academic excellence. Mrs. Pritchett supports Berry not only by promoting academe but also by being supportive of student activities. She shows her school spirit by often attending school events and wearing black, white, and orange in support of our Bucs. Her sense of humor and ready smile make her a positive in- fluence on all. When away from her office, Mrs. Pritchett enjoys traveling and spending time with her family — especially being Gran- ny to her grandchildren — Grant, Matt, and Alison. Charlotte Ray Y As Library Aide, Mrs. Ray goes beyond what one might expect. She is always ready to assist teachers and students and never seems to be harried by last minute requests for copies and materials. With a faculty and staff of more than 80 and a student body of about 1400, the demands of this job often become more than many could handle. Mrs. Ray ' s calm demeanor and never-ceasing desire to help others in- spires admiration and respect from all. Mrs. Ray has been at Berry for 17 years. In addition to commanding the copy machines. Mrs. Ray serves as an important liaison with the Instructional Materiels Center and the teacher. Making sure that equipment is readily available is also important. It is Mrs. Ray who often sees that the instructional program runs smoothly. In her spare time, Mrs. Ray enjoys traveling — she never misses the February NASCAR races at Daytona. Another of Nanas favorite pastimes is spending time with grandchildren: Daniel, Sam, and Rachael. We ' re just here for decoration. In December the play was presented at the State level and received a rating of excellent. The Choral Department ' s Spring Concert was held on May 16 at Shades Crest Baptist Church. The concert freshman and mixed ensembles performed. Mrs. Diana Mayhall and Mrs. Edna Pate were hon- ored for their support of the Berry Choir. Since October 13, twelve JeffCoEd schools have created a closely knit partnership that includes an adopter such as a business, industry, or civic organization. This agreement is that the schools and the businesses will share time, talent, and expertise, or in other words matching what a school needs with what a business can do to help meet those needs. Purpose? It fosters a better understanding of the schools and creates a sense of personal involve- ment and interaction between businesses and schools. The program is I not designed for financial support. Each party shares alike in the adop- ' tion. The adopter gets satisfaction in service and benefits from the ex- cellent publications. The school benefits from the commitment to assist in the development of the full educational potential of the school. JeffCoEd ' s adopt-a-school concept is coordinated through its com- munity education program. Each adoption involves two sets of adop- tion certificates signed by the school principal, community zone coor- dinator, the business owner, and JeffCoEd ' s superintendent. Alabama Power adopts Berry Dr. Burkett, superintendent, accepts the adoption papers. On Dec. 18. 1985, HOSA held a diabetic screening for the Birnningham community. CARAVEL: Do you prefer the English or metric units of measure for sewing? Why? Mrs. McClure: English-metric is fine when everything and everyone goes metric. CARAVEL: What is your favorite fabric from another country? Why? Mrs. McClure: It depends on the season. 100% wool from England — (tweeds, plaids, herringbone), but Birmingham weather is not for its use to any extent. I love ultra suede. It ' s easy to sew and easy to care for. CARAVEL: Do you think math is a universal language? Why or why not? Mr. Snoddy: Yes, everybody does it! CARAVEL: What ' s your favorite foreign car? CARAVEL: It ' s been said that we can learn from the past. Please comment. Mrs. McGee: This statement is so true. Most mistakes made are not original — they have been made before. We can prevent making future mistakes by knowing of the mistakes of the past. CARAVEL: Tell us about your background and how it has influenced your teaching, Mrs, Sellers: I was born in Seoul, Korea, and I came from Korea, I studied ballet and art, I was in the National Ballet Company in Korea, and I went to Ei Wha Women ' s Univer- sity — the largest and most famous women ' s university in the world, I received an A,B,, MA., A, A degree from Sam- ford and UAB, I have taught ballet at Bluff Park Community School tor twenty-three years — this was my first ex- perience with young students, I liked teaching so much I decided to become a teacher. This is my twenty-first year of teaching at Berry. There are so many good students, and talented students, it is a constant and rewarding challenge. CARAVEL: What is the funniest thing that has ever hap- pened to you in another country? Mrs. Sellers: When I travel, people always treat me like an Oriental person, instead of a U.S. citizen. CARAVEL; Would you like to live in a foreign country? If so, where and why? Mrs. Pritchett; No, definitely not Amsterdam, C ARAVEL; What ' s the funniest thing that ever happened to you in a foreign country? Mrs, Pritchett; While visiting Holland, the bus driver took three of us to a different hotel and explained that the group would be staying in two hotels. We walked in the building thinking it did not look at all like a hotel. As we stood there beside our suit- cases, a bell rang and high school students filled the area. They were going to classes. They looked at us and our suitcases and went on their way What a hoot! CARAVEL; How has travel helped in your profession Mrs, Pritchett; I have been in so many countries and observed all levels of economic life, I have been through many countries where the customs office had no organiza- tion, and I appreciated the U,S,A, customs so much. The hunger, poverty, lack of freedom and obvious evidence of guns made me appreciate my country. This has helped me to accept a person for what they are, no matter what background, and to show sincere caring and understanding. The travel has broadened my outlook and helped me to understand people and their problems with a less restrictive attitude, CARAVEL; How do you see Berry in the year 2001 ? Mrs. Pritchett; Berry will be a vibrant, thriving high school in a very exciting and ex- panding city. The academics will be very strong and students will be tuned in to the need for education in order to succeed in our very fast changing technical society. More attention will be centered on the higher sciences, math, and foreign language, with a strong flavor of fine arts, I, of course, will be retired to a beautiful home on the beach, if I ' m lucky. Mrs. Huddleston: I would like to live in Greece because of its sunny climate, its azure skies, its classic culture, and its sapphire seas. The Aegean ' s harbors are a sailor ' s haven, and I want to own a sailboat. CARAVEL: Of what value are computers in your teaching field? Mrs. Huddleston: As a learning, disabilities specialist, I find the personal com- puter to be a valuable resource for individualized instruction. Our software library includes math and language programs which help to prepare the student for the AHSGE. Each student can work at his own speed and most of the programs are self-directing. Computers are a great way to motivate slow learners (or fast learners). Computers will never replace teachers, as some of us fear? We should all be computer literate! CARAVEL; As senior class sponsor, what do you consider most challenging? Mrs. Huddleston: The most challenging aspect of being Senior Class sponsor is to know when to butt out. I really do enjoy working with the Seniors! Beauty Walk and graduation are favorite times for me. Sometimes it is tempting to become too involved with the students ' activities and to give advice when it is not wanted or needed. Each year a new slate of officers takes the helm, and it is difficult for me to resist telling them what to do and when to do it. Each class assumes its own identity, and reflects the energy and organizational abilities and sense of humor of its leaders. It is a real challenge for me to give my advice and support without being pushy. I try! ...i-- . Growth of the little community followed quickly. In 1958, W. H. Hoover opened The Employers Insurance Company and soon other businesses moved into the area. A vote was defeated to incorporate in 1964; however, just three years later the town became a reality. Hoover was upgraded to the status of a city after a 1973 census showed the population had increased to about 3600. The city is still enlarging its boundaries and its businesses. The southeast ' s largest shopping mall, The Galleria, opened in February. Votes were taken to annex acreage into the city limits. People moved into the area because of its excellent location, its financial opportunities and its still small-town at- mosphere. Expansion brought new promises and potentials and a fresh awareness that our view of the world is ever-changing. The city of Hoover congratulates the SENIORS and wishes the best for all the B UCCANEERSU! Mayor: Frank Skinner Council Members: William Billingsley, President T. H. Dena and Mo at Taylor Publishing for answering so many questions. Without the patient and helpful folks at Belmont Studios, we could never get everything ready to be published. We ask them to process film in record time, make copies of pictures for us, and arrange to have a photographer available at the last minute. We truly appreciate their help — especially Katherine. As we grieve for these heroes and feel for their families, we are reminded of how modern technology has affected our view of the world. Within minutes of the explosion, we saw pictures taken of the fatal launch, we saw reporters asking NASA and the White House the reasons for the tragedy, we heard top anchormen delivering poignant essays, we viewed prime time specials as authorities sought to analyze the future of the space program. Everything unfolded so rapidly; there was no long time span as we waited for news. Modern technology, instead, subjected us to an immediate view of the horror of the fiery explosion. Because of our technological advances, we have become capable of transmitting new swiftly; however, we must remind ourselves of what it is that makes Americans special. It ' s not our great Twentieth Century gadgetry; it ' s our view of the world in the future, a view that enables us to face the deepest tragedy with optimism and hope. Caravel, You ' ve been a great group. We ' ve put together one of the best books yet. I don ' t apologize for all the times I ' ve yelled, fumed, sneered, or bellowed. You always needed it and it made me feel better. Shannon, thanks for coming to the big city and showing us some new angles. Quiet Corwin, you certainly learned to speak up for yourself. I ' ll have to be on guard next year. Poor Penne, I really abused you, didn ' t I? You are the better for it, my dear. Kim, Tami, and Tammy, you ' ll probably always be where you don ' t belong. L.A., you ' ll always be Miss Proper to me. Fussy Face, I really loved to see you get embarrassed just so you would giggle. Adrienne, you are simply outrageous! Hoppe, you are rotten unto stinkiness but I do adore you. I wonder how you ' ll ever manage without my supervision. Kevin, did you ever ofo anything? I know you did, darling, don ' t pout. Wacky Wicky, never was anyone so appropriately named. Pam and Amy — the assistants — thanks for your assistance. It was wonderful to have someone turn in pages that were done right the first time. Smurt, you did enjoy being in charge, didn ' t you? Whatever will I do without you? Seniors, I ' ll miss ya lots. The rest of you precious petunias had better get to work on next year ' s book. I wouldn ' t want to have to get upset! With all my love, BR PARISIAM The Caravel staff wishes to thank the Wynfrey Hotel and Parisian at the Galleria for allowing us to take closing pictures there.
