Tlu- girl who kept the sponsors in line. Through the efforts of a few untiring students and the three hardworking sponsors, the Caravel is pub- lished every year. The work began in July at the yearbook workshop held at Samford University. In August, the staff members began the initial selling of advertisements, which helped raise the money for the pul)liration and for he color pages. The work continued until the final deadline on February 20. The members of the staff drew the layouts, wrote the copy, and in some cases, even took the pictures which appear in the annual. It is a long, hard job, but a very rewarding one — especially when the final dead- line is met. Every staff member and sponsor takes pride in presenting the 1968 Caravel to Berry High School. It is the wish of everyone involved that this annual will bring fond and sincere memories of school days at Berry High School. One of the most outstanding clubs at Berry, the Senior Art Chib takes pai ' t in many commu- nity as well as school projects. The Art Club makes posters, scenery, and backdrops for games, assemblies, and other school func- tions. For its beautiful float, Capsize the Colonels, the Art Club took the first-place trophy. Its many other projects include painting trash cans and beautifying the school. One of the main activities is taking part in the Art Clubs of Alabama convention. This year it was in Mobile and the Berry Art Club ' s own Barbara Walker served as President. Lise Heinrich, through the club ' s hard campaign, was elected state secretary for 1968. Both girl and boy Out- standing Art Club Member of Ala- bama trophies went to Berry stu- dents — Barbara Sloan and Doug Smith. The club is truly one of Berry ' s best. 31 Future Homemakers of America Becoming one of the most outstanding clubs at Berry, and also one of the largest, is the pride of the Future Homemakers of America Club members. The club, sponsored by Mrs. Lawler and Mrs. Adams, gives interested girls a chance to learn about the special skills required of a good homemaker. The Home-Ec Club takes an active part in school functions and events. For special money- making drives, the club sponsored a bake sale to which each member contributed a product of her culinary art. The club provided clothing and food for needy families during the year and entered a hand-made layette in competition at the State Fair. Always active in school functions, it is also no wonder at all that the Future Homemakers entered twelve of their prettiest girls in the Senior Beauty Walk. Each year debate con- tests are sponsored by the club and each member is encouraged to enter. The club, under the direction of Mrs. Nick, sponsors several annual projects. Two of them are the Berry Novice Debate Tournament and the Easter Egg Hunt. Because public oration is foremost in the minds of those in the Forensic Club, the meetings are often spiced with ad- dresses by guest speakers. Members are able to see an orator in action while ab- sorbing information furnished through the speeches. Favorites this year were Ginger Sharble, Alagasco ' s girl on television, and Brad Bishop, debate coach of Samford University. A. McRae, Pres.; A. Chappelle, V. Pres.; S. Spratlin, Sec; M. Leaving behind a home by the ocean, Juan Itunalde arrived here from Costellon de la Plana, Spain, to become our first foreign exchange student. His father teaches in ele- mentary school and heads a family consisting of five boys and five girls. Juan also had to leave behind the snow — and he loves snow skiing. Not all of his hobbies have been forsaken in the United States, however. He can still shoot basketball, play the guitar and sing songs. Sometimes a hidden talent manifests itself when he is in the kitchen — he ' s a great cook. Tortillas, an omelet-like dish of potatoes, eggs, onions, and secret ingredients has become a favorite at the home of Carlos and Jamie Duval — his American hosts. In Spain, Juan had studied English for five years and thus was able to attend regular classes (and re- ceive regular report cards). Studying does not con- sume all of his school time, however. He is an en- thusiastic participant in the A.F.S. and the Concert Choir. Living in a new country means new experiences, and Juan has had a few of his own. He has discovered steak and football, both of which he enjoys tremen- dously. Another first this year was an American Christmas. Christmas is celebrated differently in Spain and Juan had never seen or had a Christmas tree jjefore. 41 Mark Johnston, Pies.; Sallie Rollins, V.Pres.: Cathy Cain. French Club Developing an interest in the French language and culture for the student is the goal of the French Club. The French Club takes part in many school activities as well as serving the community in many ways. Mrs. Rankin is the sponsor of this club. This year the French Club was chosen state secretary of all of the French Clubs of Alabama. Its main job in being secre- tary club was to print a booklet four times during the year to send to each French Club in the state. With members ' help, Ramona McDonald did a great job of editing the publication. On March 22-23, members traveled to the University of Alabama for the state- wide convention. Among the many activi- ties they participated in, the most out- standing were a puppet show and an orig- inal skit presented in French. Members are tapped in the spring of their fourth semester of French. It is quite an honor to be num- bered among its membership. The biggest event of the year for the members is a dinner party soon after Christmas, symbolizing France ' s Twelfth Day Dinner. This year it was held in the home of Barbara Sloan. To the delight of all involved, a French chef pre- pared the meal. Since he had lived in France up until three years ago, he cooked a truly great French meal. In February, the club was honored by the presence of Mr. William Lathrop, Birming- ham ' s French consul, who spoke to the mem- bers about future opportunities for French students. These students, who make up the German Club, work to pro- mote an interest in German culture. The members, who are either now taking German or have completed two years of the language, follow the tradition of good food and fun. Their annual activities included a banquet and several parties. An outstanding meeting was presented when Miss Jill Hoogstra, a junior at Birmingham Southern College, answered questions on Rus- sia. With a goal of a trip to Europe, the choir worked to achieve the excellence that is required for such a trip. Among the activities of the choir was the animal selling of booster buttons. These were made and sold by members of the choir every Friday during football season. The choir continued to take an active part in the as- sembly programs. They provided stirring and appropriate music for the lovely patriotic assembly, which has now be- come famous. Pure pleasure was the purpose of the trip made by the choir at the semester break. Skiing at Gatlinburg and just fun was the intention of all who were lucky enough to make the trip. Visits to places closer home were usually for a very dif- ferent purpose. Especially at Christmas time, the choir mem- bers share their music with local church congregations, civic clubs, ETV, and homes for the elderly. Choir members contribute not only their talent, but many unselfish hours of rehearsal and public presentation to keep Berry in the limelight. Top Row: B. Packard, J. Barnes, S. Mnbley, T. Hodges, T. Excitement Fills the Air at Homecoming Floats, beauties, and exciting football . . . that sums up just about anybody ' s homecoming. But at Berry, homecoming is always something espe- cially exciting. The excitement mounted during the day as students busily worked to complete their club ' s floats. The finished products were then displayed in a parade immediately before the Homecoming Game. First place honors went to the Senior Art Club. The Concert Choir, the Band, and the Future Homemakers tied for second place. The Future Scientists ' float captured third place and the French Club, fourth place. The Junior Art Club took top honors in the Junior High Division, with the Choral Group coming in second. The juniors and se niors are able to attend two discussions led by the college representatives. Through these ses- sions, the students learn a little about en- trance requirements, financing, and courses of study offered. Career Day is held in the spring each year. Students are able to learn about almost any profession from a representative of that pro- fession. Such topics as educational require- ments, salaries, and opportunities in the various fields are discussed. These two special days are very helpful to the students in their decisions as to college and career choices. Students Enjoy Special Assemblies Berry students this year were indeed very fortunate to witness such a great variety of assemhlies. They ranged from humorous, such as Cousin Cliff ' s visit, to very se- rious, as was our outstanding patriotic program. Every Friday during football season the students were called upon to show their school spirit and team support at the pep rallies. Other special programs included a Boy ' s Beauty Walk, and an assembly to present Juan — our first exchange student — with his Christmas presents. The year was climaxed by the annual Awards Day. Each spring one week is set aside during which the girls must obey the boys ' every whim. This week is climaxed by the Kangaroo Court during which the girls are punished for their disobedience. At this time the poor, defenseless girls are forced to have tricycle races, walk a gang-plank, and other unusual penalties. A panel of judges decides who will get eggs, pies and mud thrown at them. In spite of these things, even the girls look forward to each Buccaneer Day. An added attraction this year was the Powder Puff football game which resulted in more bruises and black eyes than Berry ' s varsity squad suffers in a whole season. 81 The Senior Prom One of the highlights of any senior ' s year is the Senior Prom. The Senior Class raised the money for their prom through the sale of pennants, the Senior Beauty Walk, and a Boy ' s Beauty Walk. This year the Prom was held on May 11 at the Parliament House. The Sen- ior Class officers and Miss Senior Class were presented in a lead-out which highlighted the evening. Excited arrivals at the Prom. |tCm4sor 82 Doug Cox helps Massie Sawyer with her glove. Election-Fever Hits Berry Late every spring, the Student Council and Junior and Senior class officers are elected. The elections for the 1968 candidates were the most colorful ever held at Berry. For two weeks the halls were covered with campaign posters. Many of the ideas used this year were unusually original and clever. All who participated in these elections, whether candidate or voter, enjoyed the excitement and work in- volved. All of the halls at Berry were this cluttered with posters and signs. Victory at the McAdome A p unishing ground game and a stingy defense helped the Bugs to an opening 33-0 victory over the McAdory Yellow Jackets at McAdory. The Bucs ' defense, which held the Jackets to only 4 first downs and a minus 9 yards total offense, was led by senior linebackers Chuck Steiner, Bill Stegall, and senior defensive end Terry Chase. The Buc offensive game, which amassed 200 yards rushing, was led by backs Bob Bridwell, Craig Coblentz, and Tommy Vaughn. Bridwell and Coblentz each scored two touchdowns and Vaughan further aided the Bucs ' cause with a 61 -yard scamper to pay dirt in the final period. 107 How Sweet It Is! CARLOS DUVAL Halfback DAVID REESE End The Buccaneers displayed a powerful offense in crushing the John Carroll Cavaliers by a score of 31-7. The Berry attack, led by halfbacks Bob Bridwell and Tommy Vaughan and quarterback Larry Burks, managed to grind out 231 yards on the ground and 61 yards in the air. The first half was all Berry as hard-running back Birdwell scored three touchdowns on runs of 3, 4, and 11 yards. Two of the TD ' s were set up by Carroll miscue. The first came on an inter- cepted pass by halfback Vaughan and the second on a fumlile recoveiy by middle guard Chuck Steiner. After a scoreless third period, the Bucs got on the scoreboard 2 more times — both coming on passes of 19 and 33 yards from QB Burks to tight end Tommy Cordell. Carroll finally man- aged to score in the final minutes of play on a run of 39 yards by QB Pat Sullivan. The Buc defense was led by Mike Cooke, Chuck Steiner, and Terry Chase. 108 TOM BUSH Center LARRY BURKS Quarterback DAVID WHITESIDE End Berry ' s First Loss The powerful Hueytown Gophers turned back the Bucs by a score of 21 to 0. Led by QB Steve Higginbotham and powerful fullback Jeff Beard, the Gopher offense proved to be too much to handle. After recovering a Spartan fumble, the Bucs led by the running of Craig Coblentz and Bridwell, drove 41 yards for a, score. The drive was climaxed by a 15-yard bootleg around end by Burks. Jim Daly kicked the PAT to make it 7-0. Moments later QB Burks capped a scoring drive with a 20-yard TD pass to end Steve Higginbotham. The TD was set up on a 43-yard jaunt by Bridwell, which almost went all the way. The Buc defense was superb as it whitewashed the Spartans. In this game as in many others, the Bucs ' defense played a major role. He was teacher, coach, counselor, and assist- ant principal at Pittman Junior High School prior to becoming vice-princi- pal at Berry. As vice-principal, he is responsible for text books, building and grounds, and transportation. Mr. Farquhar has proved most capable and dependable in the performance of these duties and Berry is indebted to him for a job well done. Mr. Charles Dickinson Mr. Dickinson was graduated from Mississippi State University where he received both the B.S. and M.A. de- grees. Before coming to Berry, he was counselor at the high school in Clarks- ville, Mississippi. As vice-principal at Berry, he is chiefly involved with pu- pil-teacher relations. In this taxing and delicate position, Mr. Dickinson has demonstrated a keen sense of values and maintained a rapport with the fac- ulty and student body. 145 Guidance Counselors MK Mrs. Smith, senior high boys ' counselor, has been at Berry for two ■' ' 9 years. Among her many duties are arranging schedules, advising stu- - dents on subjects that should be taken, and solving problems students v bring to her. She has helped organize Career Day in the spring, and- also helps carry out senior projects. We the students appreciate the v3 time and effort Mrs. Smith has put in at Berry. MRS. BARBARA SMITH Converse College, B.M. University of Alabama, M.A. Helping senior high girls prepare for college is the responsibility of Mrs. Sutter. She is always availal le to discuss schedules, college applications, and personal problems with the students. Mrs. Suiter also helps plan College Day in the fall and Career Day in the spring. She is certainly an asset to the senior high girls at Berry. MRS. VIRGINIA SUTTER Birmingham-Southern College, B.A. MR. ASA ATKINSON Mississippi State University, B.A. Delta State College, M.A. As junior high counselor, Mr. Atkinson helps students adjust to their new school life. He advises eighth and ninth-grade students on subjects they will need and also adjusts their schedules. Even though this is only his first year at Berry, he was a big help in planning and carrying out College Day. We at Berry are verj- proud to welcome Mr. Atkinson to the faculty. 146 Office Staff MRS. JACQUELYNE HALL MRS. DOROTHY HOLTZCLAW MRS. ELVIRA FOWLER Efficiency is essential in the office of a high school, and Berry is very thankful to have a staff with such characteristics. Mrs. Jacquelyne Hall, Registrar, is in charge of hills and club money, a vital part of the school. She has given many years to Berry and we are very proud of her. Mrs. Dorothy Holtzclaw is Assistant Registrar and she is mainly con- cerned with compiling the registers and is responsible for the recording of grades on students ' permanent records. Mrs. Elvira Fowler, also Assistant Registrar, has as two of her numerous jobs, checking students in and out of school and typing up the daily attend- ance report.
