THE ROAD NOT TAKEN Two roads diverged in a yellow wood. And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long 1 stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair. And having perhaps the better claim. Because it was grassy and wanted wear: Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same. And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how wav leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall he telling this yvith a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I- I took the one less traveled by. And that has made all the difference. Ine. 2 DEDICATION Although Miss Julie Robinson, our class advisor, must have had moments of disillusionment regarding us in the last four years, she never ceased to encourage us and to inspire us to achievement and to success. We express our deep appreciation for her interest, her guidance, and her unending efforts on behalf of our class. In grateful acknowledgement of all she has done for us, we dedicate our Yearbook to her. The Class of 1968 To The Graduating Class of 1968: Young people are demanding freedom. The dimensions and charac- teristics of this demand have caused it to be labeled a youth movement. Like a number of the youth movements in modern history, the present one is provoking much national concern. On the surface, this concern appears to be related to long hair, L.S.D.. love beads, demonstrations, and draft card burning. A more penetrating analysis should reveal that the concern is related to the un- willingness of young people to accept real liberty in the shape of their lives. Real liberty requires that those who enjoy it accept full accountability for their mistakes. The present youth movement has rejected this re- quirement. You are confronted with the challenge to launch a new movement characterized by the restoration of those invariant virtues that strengthen society. The Class of 1968 offers strong hearts and hands to the task. Sincerely, Robert P. Long Principal 3 Dean of Girls Mrs. Margaret Corr Assistant to the Principal Mr. Clifford A. Ah. hut when that hectic week was over the Seniors got their comeuppance because we rebounded with re- newed strength and vigor and won the classic Maga- zine Drive. In the crisp autumn air we joined in the enthusiasm and cheered “What’s your motto? Do or die. Where do you come from? BERLIN HIGH. And wc looked on with a sense of pride as Kim Clark represented our class at the Homecoming Cere- mony. The year passed quickly. e tackled Midyears and all too soon we found we had survived Finals. We spent long weeks in preparation for our final tribute to the Seniors. The gym became a sun-drenched beach as the Surfing-So-Long took shape. “What did SI Initiation of the girls of the Class of 1968. you say that blue stuff is? ft’s supposed to be a wave. Use your imagination!” As the year came to an end we looked forward to stepping up to the rank of Sophomores. The Sophomore year arrived and we delighted in just watching the antics of initiation. As football sea- son approached we got our poster paints and entered the vigorous school spirit competition. Led by our J.V. cheerleaders we cheered until we were hoarse but just couldn’t compete with the Class of ’69. We gra- ciously took honorable mention and determined to try again the next year. It was a great football season as the Redcoats won the Conference. And wasn’t Ramona Dumais a pretty picture as our Homecoming attendant? Next we found ourselves in the shadows of the trees of Sherwood Forest as we planned for our class dance. This was a rather unproductive year for us. We were no longer the victims of the Seniors’ pranks and we were not yet ready to enjoy the fine distinction of being “Upperclassmen”. Being a Sopho- more was like being the middle child in a large family. Then we were Juniors. Our high school days were half over but the true challenges and experiences Initiation of the Boys of the Class of 1968. Rrmemlwr this? were yet to rome. There were Boston Batteries and P.S.A.T. Tests to contend with and our counselors were urging us to visit colleges! The Magazine Drive came and the mascots were distributed to successful salesmen. We had another great year on the gridiron — Pat Larson was a delightful adornment at Home- coming. And the Drill Team added a flare to the half-time show! Then it was back to our poster paint, brushes, blue jeans, and sweatshirts as we began to create “Camelot”. And oh those work sessions at Carol G’s house! The majestic atmosphere of the royal throne of Camelot was the fruit of our labor. Doris Collin reigned as Queen Guenivere and her escort as King Arthur. The climax of that unforget- able night was receiving our class rings. ‘ Hey, my initials are upside down!” . . . ‘‘Let me see the flame on your lamp.” At the football awards assembly we cheered as the coach announced the new co-captains. Neil Boissoneau and Roger Pulito would lead our team to victory during the next season. On a Satur- Freshmen are sold lo the highest bidders. day morning in May we sat nervously in the cafeteria waiting for instructions for the verbal part of the S.A.T. And then we waited with even more anxiety to find out how we had fared. At the end of the year we said good-bye to the Seniors and stepped into their shoes. We performed our first act as Seniors when we proudly walked across the Senior Court. Finally we were Seniors. We were immediately faced with a problem which required mature con- sideration: Initiation was going to be banned unless it was satisfactorily revised. We met the challenge and saved the Senior tradition. The gym was the scene of the Senior Slave Market where auctioneers Myles and Kathy Buckley sold Freshmen slaves to the high- est bidders. The Berlin Fair found us collecting money for the Senior Piggy Bank. But oh those messy 53 Doris made a lovely queen apples! “Either that pig’s mouth is too small or them apples are too big.” Preceding football season we had a great spirit week. The cafeteria was a myriad of slogans and signs; there was everything from effigies of defeated Monteville players to B.C. dinosaurs wav- ing B.H.S. banners. We mustered all our pep and spirit and screamed our way to victory at the final competition. “Our name is engraved on the spirit trophy. We have gained immortality.” The excite- ment of the football season was heightened as we presented Ramona Dumais, our queen, and Kathy Williams, our Senior Attendant, at the Homecoming Dance. Later in the year, as our yearbook began to take shape, Carol Gandolfo and Kathy Genoni could be seen skulking around the halls with the photogra- phers trying to get candid shots of Seniors in their natural environments. When the time came to begin l.ouis Rascoe, Marshal at Class Night of 1967. planning for the Ball, we chose “The Taj Mahal” as our theme. After we had worked our way out from under a truck load of crepe paper, we found our- selves standing on the threshold of that grand palace, the Taj Mahal. The magic of that night will be long remembered by those who attended. As the warm weather came, we found ourselves practicing for commencement. “Left, together, right, together!” At 54 last we had made it to Classnight and Graduation. ly knowing that we were leaving behind a score of We congratulated each other with handshakes, and in friends and a treasury of assorted memories which would always remain a part of our lives. some cases, with tears. And sorrv I could not travel both And be one traveler, long 1 stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in tbe undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair. And having perhaps the better claim. Because it was grassv and wanted wear: Though as for that the passing there Had worn them reallv about the same. And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how wav leads on to wav, I doubted if 1 should ever come back. 1 shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I- I took the one less traveled by. And that has made all the difference. From COMPLETE POEMS OF ROBERT FROST. Copyright 1916 by Holt, Rinehart and Winston. Inc. Copyright 194-1 bv Robert Frost.
