Lowell Gutdattrr Court te lor To The Class of 1964: Someone has claimed that nothin? is so astonishing in education as the amount of ignorance it accumulates in the fora, of inert facts. This may be true if facts are left uncombined with life situations in the apparatus of daily Judgment making and uncatalyzed by the desire for constructive achievements. The transformation of inert facts into active, applied knowledge brings about some unusual properties. The product is without diminishing returns and has greater value than the sura of its original elements. The future will provide the apparatus and the life situa- tions. Your educational experience has provided the facts. You must provide the desire for constructive achievement. Tach is an essential element in a reaction which can help bring to you the enviable wealth of a wholesome existence. The faith anc aspirations of the faculty attend you in your search for this wealth. Sincerely yours, Hobert . Long , : ■ ipal 3 ADMINISTRATION SUPERINTENDENT Mr. George W. IT WILL NOT BE THE SAME We’re off the stage now, leaving fond memories behind. The girls are crying; the hoys are jubilant. Just think of all we have done in four years — four memorable years. These are things good or bad, great or small, that we will never do again. Our reminiscing started as we began to draw on the past four years for our Class Night skits. It’s hard to say what was more fun — rehearsals or the end result. We enjoyed ourselves more as performers than the audience did. The “little folk” gave us a big sendoff; the whole school turned out to shout a mighty “Farewell.” But the Senior Ball was THE night. What appeared to be an ordinary gym until 2:07 was transformed into a wonderland. Everyone turned out to help and make it a class effort. Our toil was rewarded by the vision of couples floating dreamily in the dim light. Another beautiful page was added to our book of memories. The Motif Club and women teachers provided a good “prelim” to the annual Key Club-Faculty battle. The Seniors gave the faculty a real ran for their money this year. “Unusual” cheerleaders added to the delight of a capacity crowd. There was a night in March when the gym floor was cleaner than it has ever been and when some students went home with bigger and better shoes than they arrived in. This and the following Saturday Sock-Wash Crisis were caused by the first “Sock Hop ” at BHS in years. It was a highly successful “feet.” Our basketball team gave us some real thrills this winter and finished with a winning season. The heartbreak of the year occurred in our first tournament game in three years against the “Devils” of Plainville. We bolstered our treas- ury by sponsoring a quaint, modestly successful “Country Store,” another first at BHS. It was a lot of work but a lot of fun. Visitors to the Store were treated to shelves of homemade jams, jellies, and baked goods, as well as to a spirited auction of articles unearthed by the Seniors. Our football team went undefeated this year and copped the Northwest Con- ference title. A little of the urgency of the preceding spring was transmitted into honecrushing action by a team that used skill and desire to make an unstoppable combination. The peak of excitement was reached at the last game where our lovely Homecoming Queen, Barbara Peterson, was pre- sented with her court. The Homecoming Dance, ush- ered in by a 44-0 victory, was a xesounding success and a very fitting finish to the entire football season. In early October the school was invaded by a squadron of scared saucermen who were seen roaming about the halls singing, “We Sau- cermen love you . . . ” Things came back to earth at a gala “Freshman Recep- tion” on the last night of Initiation. Senior Court saw Freshman boys pirouetting around the gym in frilly tutus and Freshman girls pursued by a gruesome patrol of law-en- forcement officers while Judge John Con- tino tried in vain to bring about some sem- blance of order. A dignified jury of peerless Seniors dealt with offenders with straight faces and crooked justice. As usual, Initia- tion provided fun for everyone and helped the ninth graders to feel that they were a real part of the school and its activities, al- though when we were Freshmen, it seemed such a cruel way to he wel- comed into the High School. But now we have had our revenge! School was not forgotten during the summer. We all got together to stage a “Hootenanny” to raise money for the football team. Judy Resnick and friends headed our program of entertainment with their variety of ethnic melodies. The ever-popular Cavaliers added a change of pace with their swinging sound. With such great talent, the evening was naturally a success. During the spring of our Junior year the School Board deemed it necessary to cut the interscholastic sports program because of a lack of finances. The entire school rose in protest. Under the leadership of oui able President, the sports program was partially reinstated. In the election of Senior officers the class unanimously re-elected Ken for the third consecutive year. Also elected were Gary Larsen, ice-President, and oui perennial Secretary-Treasurer team, Karen Anderson and Jeff Heire. In keeping with our knack for unusual themes, our Junior dance was no exception. The guys and gals had a “rip snortin ’ time at our wild western “Roundup.” We chowed down at the Chuck Wagon, lassoed a bright-eyed miss, and mo- seyed out onto the dance floor. The accents of saddle and sage provided a fitting atmosphere for a roarin’ evenin’. The highlight of our Junior year was the Prom. 41 Many hours of scrambling about the school were rewarded by the knowl- edge that ours was the best ever. All those who saw the decorations called them the most beautiful in the history of BHS. Veiy few people could tell that it was actually our gym. The magnificent architec- tural feat of silver arches carried out the theme of a “Night in Camelot.” Authentically dressed pages led couples across lowered drawbridges into the resplendent atmosphere of a medieval castle. To add to the excitement our rings were presented at intermission. The high point of the evening was the crowning of Queen Fran Molumphy and her escort, Peter Nuss, who then led us in the Grand March. The Prom ended as the last strains of Russel Fararr’s music drifted through “Camelot.” Homecoming of our Junior year was disappointing because of our defeat at the hands of Gilbert. However, the day was brightened at half-time when the Queen and her court were presented to the spec- tators. Karen Anderson carried the laurels for our class at the game and at the dance that evening. In the early fall we were sitting in fourth period class when — the fire alarm rang. There was much confusion as to which exits to use since it was not second period. Standing outside, we became more alarmed when two police cruisers arrived at the school. Mr. Long informed us that there was an object resembling a bomb in the I. A. Department. Yes, a real BOMB SCARE was upon us. The excite- ment ended as the object was identified as an attempt at a homemade flashlight. Classes then resumed, much to the disappointment of all. We started off our Junior year with a bang in another way — we elected a fine slate of class officers. Ken Sherrick continued as President with Pam Avery assuming Vice-Presidential responsibilities. Once again there was our fine Secretary -Treasurer duo, Karen and Jeff. Our memories are getting a little vague now, but there are still a few things that stand out in our minds. There was, for instance, our Sopho- more dance: “Roaring Twenties.” Who else would try to decorate the gym with hula hoops? It was a smashing success, even when the globe fell down! We faced Homecoming festivities with mixed emotions. We lost a tough game to Griswold. Once again the Queen and her court brightened the day. Barbara Peterson was our dazzling Sophomore atten- dant. Susan Burnham held the first class meeting of our Sophomore year in early September; it was to be her last. As fine a President as she was, who could stand in the way of the rising star of our illustrious leader, Ken Sherrick, who was to guide us right to the end. Tom Griffith was elected Vice-President, and again Karen and Jeff faced the world together. And then, remember, there we were — little frosh, wishing the Seniors goodbye in our grand Senior Farewell. As far back as it was, can we ever forget the diplomas hanging on the wall and the chalked representa- tion of graduation? Our memory is rather sketchy now, but we can still remember our first Homecoming. We won the game that day. The dance was a great success, as was our Freshman attendant, Susan Burnham. Every October Initiation strikes terror into the hearts of a mob of screaming little imps. It was our turn! Can you imagine us — • US! — tramping through the corri- dors clad in nightgowns and capped with baby bonnets? And those signs: “Cry Baby” and “Snookums.” Most pictures taken of us at that time have been de- stroyed! Such degradation, and only a month after we arrived at Berlin High School, all fresh and innocent. Little did we know! Fortunately, we were organized and ready. Under the capable leadership of Sue Burnham, Vice-President Pam Avery, and, of course, Karen and Jeff (at the start of their illustrious careers), our Freshman Class was already a functioning unit. There we were, walking through the doors foi oui first day as high school students. We will walk through those doors many times in the future, but IT WILL NOT BE THE SAME. Happy times and fond memories to the members of the Class of 1964. All hail the chief! Yes, it was true — ou r Redcoats had been vic- torious in the 7th and final game of the year. Add to this 6 previous victories, and you have a BHS season second to none. This team which seemed to be one of the best, if not THE BEST in BHS history, was composed of a powerful offense, an im movable de- fense, and a dedicated coaching staff. The offense scored with ease against any opponent it encountered, while the “Berlin Wall’ proved to be impenetrable to all adversaries. The coaching staff combined ability and sincere interest to bring out the best in the team. This was proved when the Redcoats won the Northwest Conference Championship. 59 BASKETBALL front Row , 1. to r.: Coach Nuccio; G. Fairwood; W. Chotkowski; G. Kanupka; R. Recor; J. CentureUi; P.
