CONTENTS ... DEDICATION We, the members of the Class of 1963, wish to express our sincerest appreciation for the guidance and support given us by Mr. Phaup. His patience and understanding have been responsible for the successes of this Class. We offer, as a small token of our gratitude for these three years of service, the dedication MR. PATRICK W. PHAUP Advisor PRINCIPAL’ MESSAGE MR. ROBERT P. LONG, Principal Commencement Season is a particularly appropriate time for issuing challenges to young Americans. Statesmen, educators, businessmen— all are recommending challenges to young Americans to do this and to do that. Yet one of the most timely challenges for today's high school graduate was made about two thousand years ago by Pliny the Elder, who wrote: Criticism comes easier than craftsmanship. The todays and tomorrows are marked as never before in history with changes both breathtaking in speed and in nature. The assimilation of these changes will have a tendency to separate us into two forces—the critics and the craftsmen. In keeping with the democratic principles which underlie our way of life, each of us may choose the force with which he would like to be identified. A word of thanks for the contributions you have made to our school and best wishes for an abundant future. CENTRAL ADMINISTRATION Mr. George W. After enviously watching others leave for three years, we find that departing is not as easy as we had anticipated. It's difficult to realize that now WE must don caps and gowns and march down the aisle to receive that important piece of paper which represents four years of hard work mixec with many happy and rewarding experiences. It's even harder to realize that four years ago we first became a part of this student body. We can recall so easily the day we entered this building, confused and even a little bit scared at the prospect of being high school freshmen. In spite of our efforts to appear sophisticated, we walked along the corridors with silly grins and looks of complete perplexity on our faces. There we were, the class of 1963, garbed in ridiculously funny Buccaneer costumes for our initiation. What a time we had singing that song, performing those stunts, and obeying every senior's command! During that first year we were also introduced to the exciting experience of the Magazine Drive—a memorable event, even though we finished in fourth place. Later in the fall, Carol Pulcini was chosen Freshman attendant for Homecoming. We owe much thanks to Mrs. Smith, our class advisor, who lent a wonderful helping hand in getting our class activities underway. We were sorry to lose her so soon. We experienced another disappointment when the basketball team suffered a heartbreaking defeat in its first tournament game. With the coming of spring, togas replaced winter coats as many of us became Romans for half a day. The other half of the day was spent in the hospital . . . remember? Freshman year ended as we gave our initiators a hearty send-off with the Senior Farewell. Summer intervened, to the relief of all, and we were one year nearer graduation. The next two years witnessed the ambitious efforts of our class to succeed in its endeavors, both social and academic. Winning the Magazine Drive during our Sophomore year was an unforgettable triumph. Finishing in second place in our Junior year failed to shake our confidence in ourselves as competent magazine salesmen. New arrival Sarah Jane Stowell hardly had time to catch her breath before she found herself Sophomore attendant in the Homecoming Queen's court. Junior year, Cynde Swanson represented our class at the Homecoming festivities. Sophomore year also saw the arrival of Mr. Phaup as our new class advisor, under whose guidance we have completed our remaining years in high school. Especially memorable that year was our presentation of the festive Mexican Holiday, which transformed the gym into a warm southern atmosphere with its bright, flashy decorations. The following year again found us dancing in the gym, but this time in a Parisian setting of quaint French shops and colorful flower stands. David Fraser and Jean Peterson were crowned King and Queen beneath the enchanting windmill of the Moulin Rouge. The long-awaited moment of receiving our class rings arrived and passed so quickly, as have the many other important events in the last four years. Sports during these two years included spirited football, basketball, baseball, and track teams which were a credit to school and class. With the end of our Junior year we were three-quarters of the way through, and had yet to experience the climax of our high school careers. Bang! We're Seniors! (And we almost weren't after the bomb scare during that first week of school!) Unbelievable as it seemed at the time, we had reached one of the most important, most exciting, most rewarding, and—yes-most trying stages of our young lives. We certainly did our best to make those Freshmen suffer. Corridors filled with Cannibals created a hilarious picture during initiation week. No Frosh was spared in our merciless attempt to gain revenge for our own sufferings three years before. The court officials at the Freshman Reception will probably never see the inside of a courtroom, but they outdid themselves in administering justice on that particular evening. For the last time we took part in the Magazine Drive, proud of ourselves even though we held second place. Dottie Lee was Homecoming Queen and reigned at the game vs. Gilbert High and at the dance that evening. The 1962-63 football team must be recognized for its outstanding work during the season, and especially for its victory in the final game, played in such discouraging weather. Selling refreshments at football and basketball games proved to be one of the most profitable of the many money-raising projects undertaken by our class. Not as profitable but more rewarding was our presentation of New Year's Eve in Washington, which played to a capacity audience. Dismayed by our first few rehearsals, we were overjoyed to see our hard work result in a successful show. It was an honor to have so many distinguished personalities grace the stage on that memorable evening. The presence of the Kennedys, who were looking forward with great vigah to the new frontier, added an extra special touch to the event. The final stroke of the clock at 12, heralding the arrival of 1963, made us realize how close we were to graduation. March saw our spirited Key Club team go down in defeat to a puffing but victorious Men's Faculty team. It was a happy night for the teachers as the Women's Faculty also downed the Senior Girls in the preliminary game. Our Senior Dance, a most profitable and nearly effortless venture, successfully revived the old tradition of Sadie Hawkins Day. Our last formal, the Senior Ball, will be remembered as a wonderful conclusion to our high school years. Class Night was an odd mixture of gaiety and nostalgia. Reliving the highlights of our high school days and seeing many of our classmates rewarded for their outstanding achievements combined to make it a happy yet wistful evening. That's all! That's it! We're through reminiscing. Even though high school has meant many different things to each one of us, the events mentioned here have all contributed to this phase of our lives. And now, as we march slowly up the aisle, we pass a group of students, and in spite of ourselves we eavesdrop: Freshman—Great!—We won't be the underdogs much longer! Sophomore—Well, another week in June gone. Junior—Just think—yes—it must be true, we're Seniors! Senior—Yes, it's over. Through four inspiring years we've dreamed of this day. We're proud, but we survey all of this with lumps in our throats. It has been a glorious four years, and we will remember them always with pride in our hearts. Busy at their typewriters are Marilyn Skinner, Bernice Rizzico, Margaret Perusse, Joanne Cieniewicz and Beverly Heidorn, breaking their fingernails for the sake of world peace. MICHIGAN, Detroit—October 15, 1976: Detroit is filled with excitement, as the 1977 models are streaming off the production lines. General Motors President Anthony Esernia has announced a new car, the Trailblazer, designed by Frank Masselle and Keith Plossl. Test driver Richard Danko reports that the new sports car will hit 217 M.P.H., but tire inspector Richard Seich was unable to find the wear on the tires, since they had melted. Ford President David Fraser, joyful at the CM. failure, announced another new car, a compact Redcoat, designed by Robert Renn and Douglas Dary, which runs on water and gives 90 miles to a gallon. However, sales director Arnold Pizer reports sales figures to be down, since most of the nation is experiencing a drought. HAWAII—November 28, 1976: Finals in the Miss Hula 1977 Contest will be held on Waikiki Beach tonight. Odds favor Paula Michaud, but Sheila Brennan, Irene Alkas, Carol Labbe, Nora Martin and Debbie Cherwin are attempting to swing an upset. The judges for this contest, Robert King, Richard La Flamme, Thomas Mayer, Barry Alexander, and Collin Campbell have no comment and say that they refuse to be swayed. On Diamond Head Beach, the Olympic Surfing Team, including Dorothy Lee, Dean Hubert and Lois Slowik, were arrested by Officer Harley Ogle for splashing water on innocent bystanders Kenneth Lockwood and Wayne Tilford. The arrest was made possible by the report of archaeologist Richard Pavlech, who was looking for rare stones with beachcomber Melvin Snyder. NEW YORK CITY—December 19, 1976: The Christmas season is in full swing, and the stores are filled with happy shoppers, in Macy's, children are waiting eagerly to sit on the lap of Santa Claus, whose role is being played by Alan Kayser. Busy salesgirls Frances Neidermayer, Diana Suprenant, Joyce Suprenant, Sharon Wilson, Carol Humphreys, and Janice Kumnick are threatening to quit unless they have hourly coffee breaks. Floorwalkers Phil Philleson, Anthony Gagliardi, and John Labrie are attempting to keep the crowds flowing from the elevators operated by Walter Procko, Thomas Roman and Ronald Ouelette. On Broadway, the Christmas shows are entering their final week. At Radio City Music Hall, the Rockettes include Pinky Rumstay, Sarah Jane Stowell, Charlotte Bosso, Vivian Ekwurtzel, Jane Wrobel, Charlotte Rival, and Marilyn Miglioli. Further down the Great White Way, an accident has taken place as famous baritone Charles Wilber was hit by a falling curtain caused by stage hand Gerie Zuk, who tripped over the controls. Nurse Barbara Waluk is attending him. Also in show business news, Alice Hubert has been signed to direct a new musical called The Lives And Loves Of Karleen Gjerpen, starring William Mattson and Diane Fairbank, but she says that she will not do it unless Paul Gacek arranges the music. CALIFORNIA—January 1, 1977: In Pasadena, the new year is being celebrated with the biggest parade ever held here. Leading the bands this year is drum majorette Jill Scagliotti, followed by Philip Sengle, Richard Kresge, Philip Weber, and the Bonnie Bunce Twirlerettes. One float portrays Tarzan, played by Pat Alix, swinging from a tree toward Jane, played by Christine Drummond. A star attraction of the parade is a float entitled The Bobbsey Twins Go To The Moon, with Susan and Shirley Catalano riding a rocket made of roses, designed and built by Thomas Hall and Craig Sandquist. The big game is between the John Regula University Roaches and the Trudy Anderson Institute Beavers, captained by star quarterback Larry Barber. The game is a tremendous one, in which Barber throws for two touchdowns to speedy end William McCarthy, but the Roaches pull the game out when Thomas Trevethan runs around the benches into the end zone while Tim Hall, Kris Kane, and Ralph McQueeney tackle the referees. Later, Rose Bowl Queen Patricia Pajor is crowned by Paul Brann while famous Hollywood photographers Ronald Cichkowski and Steven Kerelejza snap pictures furiously. CONNECTICUT, Berlin-June 18, 1977: In Berlin, the Berlin High School graduates of 1963 are holding their reunion. Helping with arrangements is the Ruth Dudzinski Catering Service, under the management of Robert Ward, Judy Surko, and Edward Yost. After supper at the home of society matron Linda Suess, prizes are awarded to the happiest couple—Arlene Serakas and Joseph Margnelli; the person coming the farthest—Janet Stevens, who flew in from Hong Kong. Entertainment includes speeches by Mexican missionary Barbara Imswiler, Multi-millionairess Regina Zautra, and world-renowned librarian Cindy Deming. The evening closed with the exotic dancing of Carol Pulcini. Betty Dutkiewicz, Rose McLaughlin and Tamara Margnelli were on hand to bid farewell to their classmates after this wonderful evening. Thus the Class of 1963 may some day affect the world. UNDERGRADS Kenneth Sherrick, President; Pamela Avery, Vice-President; Karen Anderson, Secretary; Jeffrey Herre, Treasurer. The varsity was supplemented by juniors Bill Chotkowski, Gary Fair-wood, George Kanupka, Bob Recor, and Mark Phaneuf and sophomores Ken Capodice and Paul Baretta. CAPTAINS Pat Alix scores many points with his fine running in the dash events. This year's track team, led by Kris Kane and Pat Alix, prepared for another victorious season to match its laurels last year as district champions. Experience was our biggest weapon as twelve veteran seniors made up the bulk of our squad. The team was supplemented by several new seniors and vigorous underclassmen. Bob Ward and Arnold Pizer support the team effort distance running. with points in Joe Puchol and Mel Snyder work hard in both the field and track events. Bill Mattson usually tops them all in the high jump. B.H.S. was well-represented in all events whether on the cinder path or in the field contests. Mr. Kaminski built up the interest in track and in so doing has developed a fine athletic tradition. Able coaching and firm determination has made this year's team an asset to our school. Jack White, Frank Masselle, and Mark Roby provide the team with good balance in the weight department. First Row, I. to r.: M. Emerson; P. Weber, Captain; R. Pavlech; D. Fraser Second Row: F.
