SENIORS CLASS HISTORY FRESHMEN In 1954 we entered Berlin High School as frightened little freshmen and were soon welcomed by the seniors during Initiation Week. The girls’ burlap blouses, short skirts, dolls, and holster sets, and the boys’ gym clothes, garters, and crazy hats were sights to behold. This glorious week ended with a wonderful Freshman Reception, given in honor of us by the seniors. We closed our first high school year with a party for the seniors. Remember the fun we had with the seniors at the Freshman Frolic”? SOPHOMORES As sophomores we felt very much at home in Berlin High School. How proud we were to have come out on top in the Magazine Drive and to have seen our football team come through with an undefeated season. We closed our year with an informal dance The House of Blue Lights”. JUNIORS Finally we were juniors, and the end of our high school days was drawing nearer. In November we held our prom Autumn Leaves”. How well we remember receiving our rings from the king and queen. At the annual talent show we found the junior boys doing their rendition of the French can-can. Melodies in May” was the theme of our informal Spring Dance. We left school in June, looking forward to the day when we would be seniors. SENIORS At last we reached the top. Roaring Twenties” proved to be a good theme for initiation. That was one week when we really felt our seniority. The week closd with the Freshman Reception, which was a very successful Record Hop”. Our project at the Berlin Fair showed good class spirit and we all felt certain that a great year was in store for us. April came, much too soon, and so did Senior Play time, succeeded by the Senior Ball and Class Night. As we march down the aisle to the familiar strains of Pomp and Circumstance”, we think of how quickly four years have passed. We have been through thick and thin together as a class, but now we must go our separate ways. Life turns another page where we find ourselves beginning a new chapter. 23 1. M. Johnson 2. B. The next in line, well-known to all, was Yankee star PETE BORGO In heated altercation with the pitcher from the Braves, None other than our Bulldog”, JOHN DRUMMOND — that’s his name. Standing in the background, as quiet as can be, NORMA NIELSON waited for the senseless fight to cease. EMIL ALBERT entered, his special angel with him; Not far behind came golfing champ — Jamie” CLARK MACPHERSON. Fashion, charm, poise and grace, that’s LOIS BIGHINATTI, Appearing from the pages of the leading magazines, Came in with PAT LABIENIEC — our only Oscar winner. We spotted JUDY NILSSON, a successful dress designer; Then all dolled up in dungarees came painter DONNIE LAWYER. Up on the stage, in front of all, was dancer CARRIE PETERSON Performing for the class with her partner KENNY FRISK. BEVERLY PACYNA, our Florence Nightingale, And Dr. GINNY LUNDSTROM, thermometer in hand, Was Ginny on the spot to care for CHARLIE HISLOP. NATALIE GIANA, our famous woman orator, Introduced PETE FESTER, the mayor of Berlin. Our attention was diverted as CHUCK DEMPSEY did appear, All-American football star—athlete of the year. With him were his team-mates from the famous New York Giants, RANDY DAIGLE, BILLY KEATING, RICH PEDEMONTI and DAN SHENE 32 And their coach who was none other than pugnacious PAT McCANN. LORRAINE GOYETTE surprised us as we noticed her short hair, A RUTHANN KINCH creation unseen anywhere. On display in the museum could be found a masterpiece That LYNN BROWN had created — she called it High School Daze”. Standing right beside it was a bust of Robert Long Which was a well-known piece of art by ZIGGY GARBIEL, President of the Artist’s Guild — instructor of sculpture too. The next in entertainment was borrowed from the Copa, BILL SEELIG with his trumpet and JOHN BUCKLEY on the trombone. With them on piano, CINDY SWANSON left her note For NANCIE HALL to pick it up and sing away those blues. Another entertainer, but in a different vein, Who made a lasting imprint on famous Carnegie Hall, Could only be one person — he’s known as MONTY WALDRON. Our Alma Mater was in order — for it had been so long, TOMMY GERDIS led it — a professor at B. U. The call to dinner finally came, from CAROLYN HAMLIN’S gavel; We just found out that she’d become a renowned attorney general. Everyone was seated as the toastmaster LOYD NEIL Stood up, and in his famous way — welcomed all who came; The Reverend JOHN PERRY then arose and offered grace. The Waldorf’s cook, BRUCE TAYLOR, headwaiter EDDIE PEPE, And a core of perky waitresses, serving the long awaited dinner. A few of them we recognized as friends from high school years, Among them GINNY SHERMAN, JUDIE STACK and BARBARA SOLEK. While everyone was dining, awards were being made; The one for distance travelled was won by BETS McCABE. The baldest one, JIM GREENLAW; the least changed, JANET NORRIE; The one for shortest distance come—PAT CORVI—still in Berlin. 33 On completion of the dinner, the table being cleared, Our postman, LARRY SCHOECH, then opened all the mail. The letters came from those away — the ones who could not come, Politician RUTH1E HANSON, engineer WESLEY ROOT, Conservationist TOMMY NEILSON, and chemist DIANE THOMPSON. From career men in the navy, a wire had arrived From KEN NELSON and ART VOORHEES, who sent their best regards. Another interruption with the ringing of the phone, It came from BETTY GRASSI — an army nurse abroad. The phone call had been handled very well by BETTE SEDDON Along with DIANE OCCHI — two telephone operators. Resuming their positions, the class proposed a toast To missionary BONNIE BERGSTROM, just back from the African coast. To foreign correspondents, ANN BLAKESLY and MARSHA SANDSTROM, And to Sergeant NANCY CARTER, all stationed in Berlin. Then the lights went out on us, we needed a repairman fast; DICK PETERSON and STAN SZYDLOWSKI were accomplished electricians, But because they had not come, JOE SURWILO and JOHN NIXER saved the the night for us. When the lights flashed on again, we saw ROGER BERG; he’s modeling clothes for Robert Hall. We also saw JUDY BITTNER; she’s head manager of that store. Then we found out that they had neighbors right next door at Kinney Shoes, GABRIELLA SLEPSKI, DIANE CHERWIN, BETTY RECCK and GEORGETTE BEGIN. The crowd then moved to the open floor — the dancing had begun; LOIS KOZALKA and DENNY ENSTAM, both teachers, were the first Along with BILLY and BETTY STURTEVANT, but they’re a professional dance team. All of a sudden we heard sirens, but right away we knew, 34 ’Twas STAN WALOWSKI and FRED MITCHEL, responding to the call. We also had some royalty among the B. H. grads Princess JOYCE of Monaco, ROMEGIALL1 that is; The Duchess of Kent, in charge of refugees, was our own JOYCE PATURZO; And we mustn’t forget Mrs. America; SULA PAULOZ captured that title this year. Then there were some announcements, read by lecturer SIS CANNON, First that BOB KOWALCYZK and KURT JOHSON, partners in an auto corporation Flad merged with another company owned by DICK TOLOMEA and GREGORY EVANS. Second that LORRAINE MATYKA and JUDY JOHNSON had gone around the world in 70 days. Then we were told of our ace” model, MARY-ELLEN BURNHAM, Whose popularity was broadened by DIANNE BENTLEY, photographer. Of course there were some business girls successful as can be, GLORIA HUCK, LORRAINE MARTIN, JACKIE NEUMANN, and MARGIE JOHNSON. This reunion was being covered for the Herald Tribune, By Editor PAT MOOREHEAD and assistant PAT PULCINI. And last that it was getting late, and it was time to go, DIANA CERRINA, a WAVE, MARTY FISKE, a WAF, were among the first to leave; And following, not far behind, was theatrical producer, ROSEMARIE LEONE. A monotone then filled the room as we all realized we had to part, From friends who had brought back memories of school at B. H. S. In tears we said good-by, good luck, we hope to see you soon And joined the chorus singing, the standard Auld Lang Syne. 35 Seated: Carolyn Peterson, Bruce Taylor, Mary Ellen Burnham.
