Gosh, he thought, I've been asleep for 10 years. It's lucky I woke up or I'd have been out of a job. The job to which he was referring was that of Head of The Department of The Berlin High School Graduates . His committee had to watch over all the High School graduates on the planet EARTH. Naturally, he had chosen to take care of the Berlin High School students, leaving the rest of the classes to his assistants. Right now he was making his report on the Class of 52. Gee, he thought, I'd better get down there right away and see how they're making out. It's been 10 years since they graduated, and I don't know what's happened to any of them. Agent XL materialized in the thriving little town of Berlin. He decided to walk down the street to the New Britain National Bank, which he had heard was being dedicated by the new mayor, Larry Clark. On the way he saw a sign, Eugene Anderson and Donald Wearne, Certified Public Accountants. Looking into their office he saw them hard at work dictating letters to their efficient secretaries, Erna Wolf and Winifred Bentley. He couldn't help noticing the tremendous number of bank executives that passed him on the street. He recognized them as Jack Riedel, Mario Focareto, Bill Gel-mini, Steve McGuigan, and Bill Magefferi. On his way once more, he came to a bill-board plastered with advertisements. One said, see BORN TOMORROW, co-starring Sandra Thompson and Pierre Bennerup. Another read, Vic Baccaro, star-pitcher for the Berlin Bloomer Boys, smokes Donkeys. He was surprised to see that Jim Pipkin, Jimmy Reeve, Bill Carlson, and Tom Andru-skiwicz were working on a house designed by the well-known architect, Robert Elliott. Finding himself in front of Carl Thorstenson's ultra-modern drugstore. Agent XL decided to stop in for a soda. He was surprised to discover that the soda-jerkers were Emilio Padelli and Terry Brousseau, the latter now being referred to as Mrs. Thorstenson. In the rear of the store he noticed the pharmacists, John Dunn, and Ralph DeVoid. He soon went on his way after paying the cashier, Ann Bernston. He noticed everyone staring at some passersby and was pleased to note that they were the famous models, Nancy Rogers, and Phyllis Wanet. Before he had gone much further, he met Bruce Koloski, the most popular dentist in town, going into Ken Stevenson's barber shop. It is rumored that Bruce has special rates for the teeth that he has filled, and, for some unknown reason, then has to pull. 18 Walking along, the first building he entered was the Hospital. The nurse at the desk was Natalie Radune. She told him that Irene Perusse, Shirley Knowles, Joan Bacon, and Kay Lane were registered nurses at the hospital. He then spoke to the head medical technician, Wanda Szydlowski. He also learned that Gladys Larson was the State 4-H leader, Bernice Konefal was a medical secretary, Barbara Lawyer, and Elsie Lewis were hair-dressers, and Bev Esberg and Lorry Jordan were dancers. On his way out of the building, he nodded to Burnum Hill, the occupational therapist, who was reading an inscription in honor of the founders. The money to build the hospital had been donated by those wealthy socialites; Jean Anderson, Linda Mariotti, Lillian Rakowski, and Barbara Simons. The building had been designed by David Jorsey and Ronald Hiltpold. XL wandered down the street toward the main building. As he walked in the door, he saw Norma Woods and Rosemarie Vorriale, secretaries, busily engaged in sending out circulars to some of the surrounding farms. Glancing over the list of farmers, he saw three of the names of the graduates of the Class of 52, Philip Lund, William Hannigan, and Robert Larson. Continuing through the building, he spied Betty Ahlquist, the private secretary to the commander of the Legion. Striking up a conversation with her, he asked her about some of her former classmates. She told him that Jo-Ann Roncaioli, Millie Silluzio, Lizz Cooney, and Vicky Schnitzke, were working for insurance companies; while believe it or not, Clayton Rizza was a mortician. Observing that it was almost time for lunch, XL sat down in the cafeteria. As he was waiting for his food, he noticed Lil Christopherson, the famous French teacher, lunching with Betty-Ann Klewicki, Berlin High School's new physical education instructor. After taking stock of the people he had met and deciding that his job was about finished, he walked down the street and turned into a dark alley. When he was sure that no one was watching, he slowly dissolved into the atmosphere. Agent XL sat on the edge of a soft cloud. He had just given his report on the Class of 52 at the Berlin High School to a messenger to be filed. He slowly stretched and leaned back on the cloud. That class is done, he mused. Guess I'll catch a little nap before I do any more work. Agent XL fell asleep and didn't awaken until the following year, when it was again time for him to return to EARTH. Signed, Published, and Declared by the Class of Fifty-Two, as and for, their last will and testament in the presence of us, who in their presence and at their request have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses. Witnesses: Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde and Senator Joseph MacCarthy Per: Elizabeth Cooney and Mildred Silluzio 21 CLASS HISTORY FRESHMEN Our first year at Berlin High was really something. We came to school with that shy, angelic look on our faces and all intentions of learning the do's and don'ts. Freshmen Initiation crept up on us, and we found the girls wearing short dresses and the boys wearing beanies. Following the Freshmen Initiation the seniors gave us a party, which made us feel part of Berlin High. SOPHOMORE With hopes and dreams of a more prosperous year, we again entered the doors of Berlin High. We started the year with the Scarecrow Swing, a dance of which we were all proud because it was the first one we had given in our two years. We finally ordered our class rings, but were told we wouldn't receive them until we were Juniors. JUNIOR At last we were called upperclassmen, which made us feel very important. After waiting for what seemed like a few light years we received our class rings. After borrowing grass from a few graves, we completed the decorations for our Junior Prom which we called The Carousel. We tried our hand at everything, and never got a firm hold. We also gave a barn dance, but at the end of our Junior year the treasurer gave us a sad report. SENIOR Walking up those Senior stairs for the first time was like walking on a cloud. To most of us it seemed as if the three previous years had piled up in one, and we started the year as busy bees. We started off with Freshmen Initiation and a party that brought smiles from all. Rushing to and fro, we put the pages of our yearbook together, gave dances, and sold cards all in one breath. Into the middle of our busy hive came Mrs. Porter with a list of suggestions for our Senior play, out of which we chose Night Must Fall. While the cast of Night Must Fall rehearsed night after night, the rest of us were out trying to raise (pardon my French) money. Seems as if we could never get enough of that stuff. Following our Senior Ball we had our Senior Banquet with faculty and members of the Senior class attending. We did get off to a slow start in our first year, but we certainly made up for it in our last year. Graduation—as we walk down the aisle with the music of Pomp and Circumstance ringing in our ears, we know that the wonderful Berlin High and everything around it has led us into the world with our eyes open and a smile on our faces. 22 ROOM 1—Left to Right from the bottom.—M. In their only game of the year, the Berlin JV squad beat a Southington JV team 6-0.
