It originates in the home and perhaps resumes in the home when we have com- pleted our formal education. The greatest opportuni- ties, recommendations, and experiences necessary to the incalculable events in our lives, however, are provided by our school. Our school days have been very rewardingg they have been enjoyable as well as educationally bene- ficial. Certainly memories and appreciation of the instruction we have received here will remain with us forever. With gratitude and pleasure we dedicate this 1959 Bervalon to the Berlin Brothersvalley Joint Schools. r ,as 4 X. Search 9ar Knauflcdgc Throughout the pages of this book, we, the seniors of 1959, have endeavored to por- tray our Search for Knowledge . This annual is both a record and an inter- pretation of the past twelve years, in which we have been striving to obtain knowledge by the academic curriculum and the social functions provided by the Berlin Brothers- valley Joint school system. Not only does it reflect the spirit and ideals taught here, but aims to stimulate a personal appreciation for the truth gained from knowledge. To be desti- tute of truth is to walk in a world engulfed by ignorance. And ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free. -John 8:32. Our eternal search is for truth revealed through knowledge. This book is organized into five distinct parts, each focusing the reader's attention on a significant portion of our Search for Knowledge . We fully realize our incom- petence to present to you the mingled senti- ment with which we leave these halls of learning. Through the knowledge we have obtained here, we have developed our minds, strengthened our character, and prepared ourselves for a more successful future, where we shall continue our Search for Know- ledge . Beverley Deaner, Mary Leis- ter, Dale Leydig, and Donald May represent- ed us in the May Court. As sophomores, we elected, Dale Leydig president, with Kay Sarver, Barbara Gless- ner, and Mary Leister assisting. Dorothy Hay designed the school symbol which is on the class rings. Two original Christmas plays were presented by the class. The class rep- resentatives in the May Court were Marlene Speicher, Carole Landis, James May, and Stanley Smith. James May, Bernard Hankinson, Donna Schrock, and Ruth Stuck were our junior Q! j pf, Zlass officers. Our magazine campaign, the Prom, and our class play were the highlights of the year. Kay Sarver, Ruth Stuck, David Smith, and Bruce Leonard were attendants in the May Court. James May again led the class during our senior year with Bruce Leonard, vice presi- dent, Dorothy Hay, secretary, and Dale Leydig, treasurer. Senior class activities in- cluded the class play, Maple Queen Contest, publication of the Bervalon, and our last prom. Now we look forward to our final few times together as a class-Class Night, Bac- calaureate, and finally, Commencement. Graduation will mark only the end of the beginning. Now, as their junior year comes to a close, they are looking forward to the final step in their search for high- er education. Here we develop a desire to become responsible citizens in our world of tomorrow. English is one of the most essential courses in our Search for Knowledge. The many phases to be mastered in this subject build the ability with which we express ourselves intelligently. We Helmet Measure In Grades Or Paints Co-ordination of the mind and hand in creativity is the watchword of any arf class. We use our minds to create new ideas and our hands to carry them out in an original way. Our Search also leads us into the finer things of life. Here we not only learned to sing well for our own enjoy- ment, but we learned to appreciate the mzrsic of Others. Our school boasts an extensive zmzilwmatics program, offering courses from general arithmetic to trigonom- etry. This program gives a student the opportunity to develop his ability to fulfill his individual need in the future. Che Knowledge The Search for Knowledge of a fu- ture stenographer acquaints one with a new field-.vl10r-tlzand. To learn to take dictation with speed and to transcribe it accurately is the main objective. The BBJHS language department of- fers instruction in two foreign tongues -Latin and French. Mastering a for- eign language not only inspires an ap- preciation of foreign culture, but creates a better understanding of our English language. We Have Gained A practical skill for any student is that of being able to master the art of f-x'1wzm'fz'ng. To our future business men and women this knowledge will prove to be invaluable. A new addition to the junior high curriculum is a scheduled gzfidam-c class. In this Search the development of young adults-mentally, morally, and socially-is the main objective. The special -skills these boys build are a very valuable part of their Search for Knowledge. Hut fyperivucc We 'vc Ubtaiued. A house itself isn't a home, but in our homvmaking classes, we learned how to make that house into a beautiful and practical home. Our Search also may take a boy into the practical world of the farmer where, through classroom study and later actual application, he is trained to master the realm of agriculture. f X f'A' - p , . fdfjgi CQQ LN 5 V Q . Mountaineer Orchestra Among the cultural pursuits in our Search for Knowledge is the field of music. During the winter months the band gives way to smaller musical groups. In two such groups, Dance Band and Orchestra, the stringed instruments are predominant and the number of brass instruments is reduced. At school plays the orchestra performs for the public. The dance band is also busy, playing for various dances. The highlight of the year, though, is the annual spring con- cert. This achievement displayed improve- ment, since it topped any record of the past four years. Heading the new coaching staff was Mr. Dale Hollern, with Mr. Clarence Reinert and Mr. Bernard McCracken assisting. The Mounties captured their first two oppon- ents, but the opposition proved too great in the l following four games. The team came back to the winning side by out-scoring Northern, but dropped the last two gridiron meets. Determination and en- thusiasm offset the lack of size and number in the blue and white squad. The thirteen girls who have played on the newly formed Girls' Basketball Team have learned these lessons well. Under the excellent coaching of Miss Norma Joiner, the girls won three out of five interscholastic games. Patsy Merrill, high scorer for the season, tallied 89 of the team's 196 p 0 i n t s. There was a large crowd on hand to witness the only game that was played with Somerset, an old rival, on the Berlin hardwood in which the Mounties were victorious. Although losing four of this year's starting five, the able underclassmen should carry on the Mountaineer tradition very well. The Blue and White five chalked up a 14 won and 8 lost record. To the patrons of the Bervalon the Class of 1959 will remember you as friends who made it possible for a dream to become a reality. Your patronage not only shows an interest in our school yearbook, but also in the citizens of tomorrow and in their education. Photography by Cover Studios 90 AMERICAN STORES COMPANY CH. A. Baltzer and Mr. Ward M. Lehman. Mrs. Baltzer held the position of literary adviser and Mr. Lehman managed the business staff. Their support ranged from the time and tasks of thc annual's planning to the final step of checking the manuscript for ac- curacy. With these mere words, the 1959 BBJHS seniors wish to express their indebtedness to Mrs. Baltzer and Mr. Lehman, Who have so gen- erously given wise and varied guidance, encouragement, and inspira- tion. 98 Our In the pages of this yearbook, we have tried to portray our school life from the day we first began our Search until the present time. The preparation of the 1959 Bervalon has brought back many pleasant memories-that yellow brick building that faced us twelve years ago, the pranks we played on each other, the anticipation with which we entered high school, the sense of achievement we felt after mastering a difficult lesson, the thrills of participating in class plays, and the enchantment of our first prom. These once important events have left an everlasting imprint on our lives. Our future will be influenced greatly by our ex- periences in this the first lap of our Search for Knowledge.
