The Faculty of the Grade School joins me in conf gratulating the Bervalon Staff on this twentieth an' niversary of the publication of the Bervalon. It has been a privilege for me to be associated with the Senior Class of 1958, since you began your travel on the road of education twelve years ago. May you, as graduates of 1958, cherish the memory of your school days in the Grade School as well as in the High School. It is my sincere hope that each student has ad- vanced in knowledge in proportion to the progress of the world. The Satellite Age offers you a chalf lenge to do great things in this world of ours. May you accept this challenge and go forward, keeping step with the signs of the times. Remember the words of Longfellow in A Psalm of Life , as he said: Let us. then, be up and doing, With a heart for any fateg Still achieving, still pursuing, Learn to labor and to wait. GEORGE S. DIVELY Grade School Principal Once upon a time there was a hardy pioneer named Mountaineer who built a sturdy home high on one of the rich rooffgardens of the world. He then took unto himself a most beautiful and cultured bride whose name was Education . As time went on, their family came to include healthy children who worked zealously to become versatile students of the arts and sciences, and robust champions of the arena. Qver the years, the IvIountaineer family grew until they were many hundreds in number. just twenty years ago, the Mountaineers began recording their family records in wellfprepared vol' umcs, across the covers of which are emblazoned the letters BfEfR-VfA'LfO'N. Our heartiest congratulations to the Mountain' eers on the twentieth birthday of their family album. ELLWGOD P. VARNER High School Principal E111

E101 l Supa ' ' paincalfzaf 44 UR PARAMOUNT concern is not only to maintain the best traditions ot' Berlin Brothersvalley High School, but also to march forward in a changing world where each year brings new problems. In doing so, let us retain our sturdiness, our simplicity, our dignity, our honesty, and our respect to God in heaven. May we avoid smugness and complacency. With these thoughts in mind, may we be able, ten years hence, to write the story of twenty successive years in which we have im- proved ourselves. The words you have read were part of my message to the students in the Bervalon of 1948. Ten years have passed since then. To me much of what we aimed for could be our goal today, for we still always wish to have dignity and simplicity, honesty and respect. Certainly we will continue to avoid smugness and complacency. Have we improved ourselves over these ten years? As individuals each of us must ask himself that question and answer it. Certainly others have their opinion. As an institution, have we improved? We think so. In these ten years member' ship in our jointure has increased. New courses have been added to the curriculum and additional personnel to our starl. A new grade school is in the bright picture of the future. ln the last analysis, however, improvement comes to each of us only to the extent that we utilize our teachers and the surroundings in which we work to secure the education which is ours for the asking and the application necessary to mas' tering it. May we, ten years hence, have no regrets as we look back and evaluate our rate of progress. JAMES M. CASSEL Szzpfrvifizzg Prirzripalf
