Smiles Are Contagious Smiles . . . Those wonderful ' expressions that work magic in people ' s lives. They touch a heart that is sad and bring hope that everything will be alright. They shine into a room and bring light and happiness with them. We ' re told that it takes fewer muscles to smile than to frown, but is that really a reason to? The smiles and laughter that are seen and heard in the halls of Berkner are not there because someone considers the number of muscles it takes. They are there rather because a person is happy, for whatever reason, and that joy overflows to other people. And when a per- son smiles, you can ' t help but smile back. Because a smile is contagious. A ray of sun- shine breaking through the clouds . . . that ' s a smile. sh 21

The Joy and Pain of Life Everything in life is not happy, however, and a person cannot always smile. Tears, frowns, and sighs are all a part of a person that must be allowed to escape at times. For if a person covers all his emotions with a smile, he does not allow anyone to really know him. Only through being open and unafraid to share our real thoughts and feelings can peo- ple become close. And become friends, trust- ing one another enough to share our tears as well as our smiles. sh Football isn ' t always as easy a game as it appears — it requires pain as well as joy. 23
