A silent sentinel of ill activities at Berkner High School is the Ram located in the front foyer. He takes on a lifelike appearance in this photo taken last Christmas. Title Page. A huge snowfall, which began only a few hours after the last foot- ball game of the season, broke a 70 year old record for a snowfall so early in the fall. This photo was taken on Greenville Avenue looking across the golf course. 334 Closing Activities Bring Exciting Moments Ram Stadium filled on many Friday nights with people and excitement as the Rams entered District 13-AAAA football. The Bandolcra officers show the pride they have of the drill team and of Bcrkner. People Are Fun People. We ' re all alike. We all have two arms and two legs. All breathe, eat, and sleep. All talk, think, laugh, and even cry. But we ' re all very different too. We have different color hair and eyes. We like different foods, and need different amounts of sleep. We speak different languages, and think separate thoughts. And we laugh and cry at different things. We ' re all neighbors, and all brothers Yet we ' re all very different individuals. And being different is what makes people so much fun! sh A Bcrkncr student pauses and watches as Berkner grows. Hi Diane McDonald — c aught in a reflective mood. Elizabeth and Debi, arc Stephanie Critton wonders why anyone invented Chemistry. Doug Pruitt happily gives the fountain a bath. l Vemon and E. L. are having a good time — in Psychology?! you cheating again?! V Gosh, I ' m hungry — and it ' s only 8:45. ' Let me make myself perfectly clear, Elaine appears to say. Twirling isn ' t Annette ' s only talent. With the coming of Spring, all of Nature came alive. Wb Ubb| Ubby Snow touched the world and brought with it cleanness. Scott and Shannon agree on at least one thing. Everyone Is Involved The announcements are on again. And they seem to last forever. The tennis team will be traveling to Pearce today for a district meet . . . Drama club members remember — practice is at 5:00 today for ' Up the Down Staircase ' . . . There will be no track workout today because of yesterday ' s rain . . . The band went to UIL contest yesterday and once again won best in class . . . Explorer Club members who are going on the campout this weekend need to meet in Mr. Mitchell ' s room at 8:00 tomorrow morning . . . And they go on and on for about ten min- utes. Sometimes you wish that everybody would just go away and leave you alone. And get off of the intercom. But someone is involved in everything that the announce- ments are about. And keeping you informed of the things that are going on at Berkner every day is what the announcements are for. Because everyone is involved ... in some- thing. sh This ought to all work — maybe it will after we wake up. ' 11 Diversity Is Seen in Students Different people, With different dreams, different hopes, different fears, different joys, different interests. And being different is what makes living so interesting. We follow our paths in courses in school, as well as things outside school. People can be seen practicing different sports, studying different subjects, laughing at different jokes - just being themselves. That is why Berkner excels in so many different areas. Because of the students themselves. sh Mom, you ' re not gonna believe this, but Rim cheerleaders work up a new cheer for the next Sometimes the only way to be alone is to sneak away from the school. 12 Happiness is playing your favorite song. The world of television and films is exciting — even at school. 13 Trey Goodman displays his athletic ability at an Explorer campout. Berkner is growing — right up to the sky. 14 iJA m We ' re Different Yet Alike. Separate — yet equal. Individuals — yet a group. Teachers — and students. Listening — and talking. Striving — and achieving. All of these things played an important role in the year 1976-77 at Berkner. We came together as separate people, yet as people we are all equals. We are individuals, yet we united as a group — the group known as Berkner High School. We came as both stu- dents and teachers, yet roles became shared many times. The students sometimes taught the teachers as much as the teachers taught the students. We came and listened — and talked — for the most effective learning was found in doing both. We strived in many dif- ferent areas — art, sports, clubs, academics, drama, music — yet all areas of achievement bring honor back to the school as a whole. And as we leave Berkner at the end of the year, we can truly say that we have grown, both as individuals and as a group. sh The Patriots pause for a moment of prayer before the game. 15 Fall Brings Football Memories It ' s fall, and that, of course, means it is football season. And football season means many different things to different people. Football season is . . . . the roar of the crowd when we score. . cold weather and huddling beneath blankets in the stands. . practicing playing an instrument and marching at the same time. . the groans when the other team scores. . practicing for hours on a half time drill team show. . car caravans. . the presentation of the Homecoming queen. . . . seeing the exes home from college at Homecoming. The excitement of each game was evident in the crowd as the mighty Rams entered district 13- AAAA. Now football season is over, and our thoughts move to different things. But the memo- ries of fall and football season remain with us for- ever. sh Ram cheerleaders open another Ram pep rally. 16 Gary Kirby seems to be wondering if he went the wrong way. The only way to stay warm at the Pearce game was to be a cheerleader. Spring Fever Hits Berkner Spring came early to Richardson, and with it came a wealth of sunshine. It was welcomed by teachers and students alike, and then that dreaded disease struck — spring fever. It swept through the student body like wildfire, touching everyone and making them almost hate school. Teachers became wardens, keeping the students chained to their desks. Assignments were sentences from which there was no hope of escape. There were many reported cases of daydreaming, and the unreported cases are presumed to be in the thou- sands. Unfortunately, there is no known cure for this disease — except summer. And even that is not really a cure, but only a way to postpone the next attack. As long as there is Spring, students and teachers will be struck with spring fever. sh Is that what 1 think it is? Weight training seems to be hard 18 Berkner students revert to their childhoods at the park. Mr. Markham relaxes with students in the library. 20 Smiles Are Contagious Smiles . . . Those wonderful ' expressions that work magic in people ' s lives. They touch a heart that is sad and bring hope that everything will be alright. They shine into a room and bring light and happiness with them. We ' re told that it takes fewer muscles to smile than to frown, but is that really a reason to? The smiles and laughter that are seen and heard in the halls of Berkner are not there because someone considers the number of muscles it takes. They are there rather because a person is happy, for whatever reason, and that joy overflows to other people. And when a per- son smiles, you can ' t help but smile back. Because a smile is contagious. A ray of sun- shine breaking through the clouds . . . that ' s a smile. sh 21 Dedication is marching when it ' s 33° outside. John and Randy seem to be discussing plays in the middle of the pep rally. 22 The Joy and Pain of Life Everything in life is not happy, however, and a person cannot always smile. Tears, frowns, and sighs are all a part of a person that must be allowed to escape at times. For if a person covers all his emotions with a smile, he does not allow anyone to really know him. Only through being open and unafraid to share our real thoughts and feelings can peo- ple become close. And become friends, trust- ing one another enough to share our tears as well as our smiles. sh Football isn ' t always as easy a game as it appears — it requires pain as well as joy. 23 KNE? A ESBEc Si Arc those teachers smuggling in food? Pin of the mighty Ram football team — united in spirit and pride. 24 Spring Signals the End of the Year. As the end of the year drew close, it became easier each day to tell it was Spring. The number of people on the courtyard grew each day, and the shades of tans got darker each weekend. The lake became more impor- tant than the paper that was due Monday. All of us were thankful that we made it through the year and were looking forward to vaca- tion. At the same time, however, regrets were felt. Many things were learned, outside the classroom as well as within, and it ' s always hard to leave a place that you spend so much time. Friends are left behind, but with the realization that they will probably be seen again, sometime, and if not, that we have learned from one another. Talking in the sunshine — a favorite pastime of Berkner students. 25 Be rkner Is People - Not Just a Building. We came as individuals, As the year progressed we became a group, a community, united in many ways. We shared our smiles, our tears, and our dreams. School was a place we knew we had to go, but it wasn ' t bad — in fact, many times it was good, because of the people. The people — the individuals — that ARE Berkner High School. sh How much postage do we owe on this? Outdoors — the place to meet and 26 Bandoleras march in for another pep rally performance Dr. Pearce visits with some of Berlcner ' s seniors. 28 Suzette is one of many people who gave blood to help Karen Jones. Students Share Pride in Berkner Spirit . . . Pride. These words can ' t really be defines in talking about a school. They are feelings that we all share as we watch Berkner grow from a wing at the Jun- ior High to a AAAA school with high stand- ards. And pride is seen in many ways. In the way a student acts while on a trip. In the care that is given the school. And in the lives of each and every person that makes Berkner what it is, and helps it to grow toward the future. Spirit . . . Pride. We see them every day at Berkner, even when we aren ' t aware of it. The Bell Guards seem to watch the people in the stands as much as they cheer. 29 £ L Board Sets High Standards x. Richardson Independent School Board Members arc (seated) Charles A. Richardson. As shown by their nationally-recognized accomplishments, the School Board of the Richardson Independent School District is perhaps the hardest working group of adults in the district. Through their enthusiasm and dedication to excellence in education the district has evolved from a small-town school system to one of the finest suburban districts in the entire country. The Pacesetter program instituted last year has met with widespread interest and has been tre- mendously successful. Similar programs are now bein g initiated by other school districts. The board this year let contracts for the construction of a new classroom wing, a student com- mons area, and a new parking lot at Berkner. Monthly board meetings are held on the first Monday of the month at 7:30 p.m. in the Board Room of the RISD Administration Building. 32 for Richardson Schools The seven members of the Richardson Independent School District Board of Trustees not only serve untiringly in their elected positions, but must carry out their business and family responsibil- ities as well. All are residents of Richardson or of the Lake Highlands area of Dallas. Mr. Leo J. Eveleth. Jr., who is serving again this year as President of the board, is Vice-Presi- dent of the First National Bank, and has been a member of the board for ten years. Mr. John A. Shillings, Vice-President, has served for seven years on the board, and is Senior Vice-President of Henry S. Miller Company. Dr. Charles A. Richardson, an eight year member of the board, is a Richardson Orthodontist and Dental Surgeon. He is Secretary of the board this year. Mr. Charles West is President of Charles West Associates, and is a seven year member. Mrs. Paul R. Seegers is a homemaker and has served four years. Mr. Martin Vernon, a consulting geolo- gist, has served four years, and Dr. Jimmy Boley, a Richardson Orthodontist, is serving his second year. I-eoJ. Eveleth, Jr., President John A. Boley 33 Berkner Principal Smith Markham 34 Shows Da ily Interest in Students Mr. Smith Markham has been principal of Berkner High School since before there was even a building on this site. Berkner spent its first year as a wing of Richardson Junior High School, and Mr. Markham watched this building grow from the ground up into the beautiful building it is today. As the school has increased in physical size and enrollment, Mr. Markham has tried to keep the friendliness of the small school as a part of Berkner. Although it is now impossible because of the enrollment approaching 2,000 for him to know each student individually, he is inter- ested in each student and through work with parents, teachers and counselors tries to smooth out any problems a student may have. He is actively engaged in many civic and church activities. V1 m By taking lime out from his many responsibilities to talk with students. Mr. Markham keeps up with students and their plans. Mr Markham samples a piece of cake from the homemaking dept Showing the love he has for Berkner, Mr Markham makes a special effort to keep it clean and attractive — in this case by spraying the trees just outside the gymnasium. 35 Assistant Principals Keep Pace Mr. Max Wade Mr. Ronnie Matthews, who for five years taught science courses and coached football at Berkner High School, served for his second year as an Assistant Principal of the school. On any given day this year students could be found peering through microscopes at blood samples or microscopic organisms, mixing various rainbow shades of chemicals and observing the reactions, dissecting frogs and other animals to learn about their biologi- cal systems, and studying the intricacies of oceanography. Many of the projects prepared by students this year provided sophisticated insight into some of the mysteries of the scientific world. Mr. Goodlow goes about his duties on a typical day at Berkner. Mr. Floyd bundles up for a chilly game. I think I ' m lost. ' 43 Homemaking courses are always popular, and those offered this year at Berkner High School were designed to prepare the student in every area from Bachelor Survival to Home Management. Students could learn to cook, sew, care for children, run a home, and many other home- making skills. Some of the courses offered included Sin- gles Survival, Custom Apparel, Home and Family Living, Food Preparation, Clothing, and Child Development. You ' re kidding! They try to communicate the needs and wishes of the students to the administra- tion. The goal of the Student Council 1s to help students understand the responsibilities and activities of student government. Student Council got the year to a start when they were voted Vice-President school for the District III Texas Association of Stu- dent Councils. The first week of school was the Howdy week. New students were wel- comed and met their teachers. To end the week a roaring Howdy dance took place for all of the school. After victory and home games the Student Council had organized the school dances, with rock groups, disco music and hit songs of the times. In mid-October student directory sales began. Guys and gals numbers were floating everywhere. In the meantime they were rush- ing around preparing for Homecoming. They were preparing Queen and Court elections, spirit balloon launching, selling mums and getting the Homecoming dance in order. Ram T-shirts and windbreakers sold like hotcakes in just a few days. The Student Council brought a special show for Berkner students, he was Elvis II. He was the biggest hit all year round, just about. His best hit was Jail House Rock. 163 Students Bring Happiness to Children Day Care child watches Easter Hunt from above. Student Council officers are greeted by Dr. J. J. The second period classes raised money and bought toys for the children at Rhodes Ter- race Day Care Center. In return the students received pictures from all the children saying Thank You. In early January there were a few out of date dressed students. It was 50 ' s day and the students had a great time dressing up, slicking their hair back and trying to be the Fonz. There was also a 50 ' s dance the following Fri- day night. April fifteenth was the night for the Celebrity Awards Banquet and Ball. The stu- dents favorite people were selected and spe- cial awards were given out. The officers for 1976-77 were: President Ricky Mathewson, Vice-President Randy Harris, Secretary Natalie Watkins, Treasurer Vickie Miller, and Parliamentarian Mark Hosang. But the Rams knew they were better than that and set out to prove it. The season ended with a good record which put Berkner in fifth place, this record included a few wins that were surprising to the teams they beat. The tie with Piano made Berkner the only Richardson school to tie or beat Piano this season. Later the Rams beat Lake Highlands 28-0, in the first game the two schools had ever played. The first time the Rams met with Richardson, Berkner led until the final 50 seconds of the game. All of these suc- cesses were made possible by a strong feeling of team spirit, according to head Coach Alan Holliday, this spirit was mainly led by co-captains John Gittle and Randy Green. Many individuals on the Ram team also had outstanding years. Rams named to the All-District teams were Greg Wallace, Cubby Walls, Gaylon Elliott, and Brad McKissack. Honorable Mention selections for All-District were Mark Tarpley, John Gittle, and Ronald Fields. From Row: B. Gee, M. Tarpley, D. Dumais, R. Swim, C. Wagner, R. Mathewson, D. Smith, B. Darden, R. Coach Everett summarizes that the team ' s success was due to Their ability to make things happen. Failure was due to lack of consistency and inability to control the tempo of the game. Basically, the reason for the losing sea- son was not being able to overcome the lack of Varsity experience in the first year of 4-A competition. Returning players such as David Jackson, Mark Schroer, Nathan Shea, John Rouse, and members of the Junior Varsity should help in overcoming this in the following season. Even with this fine record, the season was somewhat disappointing because the team had made it to State Competition for the last two years. Coach Stockton comments on season by saying, The boys worked hard this season and have no reason to be ashamed of a third place finish. Biff Jackson and Pete Williams were both elected to the All-District 2nd team, and Ron Givens received an honorable mention. Pete Williams was also named Most Valuable Player in this season.
