Varsity Football SIDELINES The pommers kept me juiced, This season was a lot better than last. — Chidi Ahanotu We might have been 3-7, but we partied like winners. — Ethan Einwohner What began with promise turned into a rough year for the Jacket varsity football team. At the end of their pre- season, the squad had a decent 2-3 record, and thev went to .500 the next week with a 14-7 win over Alameda, their first GBAL opponent. That ' s when things went steadily downhill: because of the terrible condition that the football field was in, no team after Oakland Tech(the Jacket ' s second opponent - BHS won 21- 15) would play here, so all the home games became away games. Then Pinole Valley, scheduled to be our Homecoming opponent, moved the game from Friday to Thursday night. This forced us to have the homecoming game at El Cerrito the next week . We had more fans at the game than the Gauchos did, although it was their homecoming game as well as ours. The troubles added up: in addition to players lost due to poor grades and injuries, the team lost a few more because of personality clashes, so it was an undermanned squad which stumbled through the last four games without a win, culminating in the disappointing loss of the awaycoming game, despite three quarters of great play by the defense. Outstanding defensive players this year were Joe Gorelick, Brinston Williams, Ethan Einwohner, and Tuan Robbins. Offensive stars were Gerald Griffin, who returned a kick-off 95 yards for a touchdown against De La Salle (the longest in recent Jacket history), newcomer Robert Young, and Chidi Ahanotu, who inspired serious recruiting interest from U.C. Berkeley, University of Santa Clara, and Princeton University. Coach Cal Anderson announced his retirement, so we sadly say goodbye to an era and a fine coach. Junior Varsity Football sidelines We certninly did better than last year. — Dave Yamoto This year ' s Junior Varsity Football Team began their season on a good note: a 2-3 record with decisive wins over Oakland Tech (42-12) and McClymonds (32-0), but failed to follow through on their gains and finished the season with a disappointing 2-8 record and last place in the GBAL. However, the team showed its strength in individual excellence as various players shined on the gridiron. Players such as freshman quarterback sensation Eric Price, Lamont Browne, Mike Carroway, Jerod Cherry, Justin Simons, and Aram Tondre were real assets to the team as they performed under pressure. Late in the year, Price was moved up to the Varsity team and a starting quarterback position, where he continued to perform to his full potential. With the bulk of the J.V. team being freshmen, next year ' s team, made up of the same returning players, is looking forward to an excellent season. Good luck next year!
